ship yard in maine. it injured six people. firefighters responded to the fire on board the sub "uss miami." all were treated and released. the fire started in the forward compartment of the sub and the atomic reactor was not operating. it was unaffected. the fire is still not out. the pakistan, the doctor who helped the u.s. track down osama bin laden has been convicted of high treason. doctor shakil afridi has been sentenced to 33 years in prison. he ran a vaccination program for the cia collecting dna in an attempt to verify bin laden's presence at the compound in pakistan. the u.s. has called for the doctor to be released. a u.s. drone strike on suspected islamic militants in northwest pakistan is likely to increase tensions with that nation. ten people were killed. it follows a similar attack in

the same region yesterday which killed four suspected militants. tensions with pakistan have already been running high over a continuing standoff over nato supply routes into afghanistan which pakistan has closed. now here's your first look at some of the other news going on around america today. in texas, a off-duty sheriff's deputy fought it out with three robbers right on his front lawn there as the deputy wrestled with one attacker, a woman who was part of the group tried to free her accomplice. then ran off to get help from a third robber. all three suspects escaped only to be arrested later. in ohio, two gay men were attacked in a diner. witnesses say the suspect used anti-gay slurs during the assault. one of the victims was knocked unconscious while the other suffered broken facial bones. police are still looking for the attackers. in michigan, a helicopter was used to drop nearly 1,000

you are a thin mint guy. >> put them in the freezer, take them out. >> you are so predictable. >> i'm mainstream. not all crazy like you. good morning, everyone. very quiet weather day out there today. and this is going to go right through the upcoming weekend. it looks like the memorial day weekend is going to be very warm. it's going to feel like summer. it already does. a couple of trouble spots out there. finally a dry morning for all of us on the eastern seaboard. the last couple of days we had the showers and thunderstorms in numerous areas. it looks good from florida up i-95 all the way in through new england. now as far as the troublesome weather out there, the northern plains, strong thunderstorms are rolling through areas of nebraska just north of omaha. and now into iowa. sioux city is really getting nailed with a lot of heavy rain and lightning. this is going to work up to minneapolis. right now just some light rain there. we could get some of these thunderstorms from mason city, iowa, to rochester, minnesota. that's your travel trouble spot, i-35. and late today we'll redo this

threat of severe storms. watch out from areas of wisconsin around madison, lacrosse, all the way through the quad cities of iowa, back down to kansas city into columbia. we could see large hail and damaging winds. it doesn't look like a lot of tornado. in chicago you appear safe. late tonight some of those storms could try to drift your way. the forecast for today, this is a really nice day out there. the humidity is still up enough that areas like new york city, baltimore, philadelphia and d.c., about a 30% chance of showers and storms. a lot of us won't see anything. there will be a few out there late today. d.c., 81. chicago near 90 today. dallas will be in the 90s. and there's those storms in minnesota. and, of course, florida this time of year, so humid that when you get into the 90s you'll pop up those storms. how does the travel day look for friday? a lot of people trying to get a beat on the rush hour, some of the rush traffic for the memorial day weekend. once again, a slight risk of storms in new england in the mid-atlantic. because the humidity is high. it's not going to be wide

welcome back to "first look." i'm lynn berry. here are some of the top stories making news. at a senate hearing yesterday, the director of the secret service apologized for the sex scandal involving agents and prostitutes before president ia. he insisted to skeptical lawmakers that what happened was an isolated incident. in new jersey, this is just unbelievably disturbing video.

but the mother of the toddler who briefly got stuck inside an active washing machine, this was seen by millions in an online video. she says she and the boy's father are not the people seen in this video. she didn't even know about the incident or that her son was briefly hospitalized until she saw that video on the news. she says the woman in the video is the girlfriend of the boy's father and she says she probably won't be allowed to babysit anymore. researchers at england's oxford university will analyze the dna of bigfoot. the ape-like creature some believe lives in north american forests. samples thought to be from the creature including hair, blood and items supposedly chewed will be tested to see what dna shows up. and this is pretty cool. english stuntman gary connery wore a specially designed wing suit to jump from a helicopter from 24,000 feet. here's the detail. he didn't have a parachute during his free-fall.

hewlett-packard shot up on better than expected quarterly profits and sales. earlier, hp dipped on news it was slashing 27,000 jobs to cut operating costs. earlier, investors punished dell sending shares down 17% after weak earnings. facebook actually rose 3%, despite news of those shareholder lawsuits we told you about earlier. the stock has tumbled 30% since friday's debut. ux tilts and health care stocks led the day's declines. walmart bucked the downward trend to close at a new 12-year high. and petsmart surged 13% on strong earnings. oil tumbled below $90 for the first time in nearly seven months as u.s. supplies continue to grow. yesterday los angeles became the largest u.s. city to ban plastic bags at supermarket checkout lines. passengers without children who are not elite members of united airlines will no longer
