recent polls put the governor ahead. neither candidate is taking their foot off the gas, starting their closing arguments over the weekend. >> i believe public elections about the future, not just the past. i think we have a powerful case to be made for everybody. >> you have a situation where neighbors don't want to talk to neighbors and relatives don't want to talk to relatives because of this political civil war that scott walker has created. i will end that civil war. >> mayor barrett is trying to end the so-called civil war. an extreme cash disadvantage. look at that. dwarfed in fundraising by governor walker and outside groups who are chipping in and he is doing it without the president on his side. the president has been mia in this recall effort. not campaigning with tom barrett. both sides of the aisle weighed in on this "andrea mitchell reports" last hour. >> we're full in in wisconsin. we're committed to helping scott walker. i think this wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for outside big union public union

boss money coming in in the first place. >> wisconsin voters are going to send a strong message to the tea party extremists that have taken over the republican party that we want you to focus on the middle class and working families. not on lining the pockets of your special interest wealthy friends. >> we'll talk more about this with ed schultz. host of the ed show on msnbc. i know you've been on the front lines from the very beginning and i want to start with the president. here's what governor scott walk her to say about his absence in the state of wisconsin. take a look. >> it is a surprise. i don't know what it says but i think it is interesting. two years ago the president came in for our opponent and he is not here now. on friday he made three stops in the twin cities, to my understanding and three stops in chicago. so it's hard to argue you weren't nearby. >> you've spent a ton of time on the ground there with wisconsin voters. did does president's no show really make a difference come tomorrow? >> well, i have to say, thomas, i was in a number of wisconsin towns on saturday and sunday. i didn't have one person say
11:02 am
president obama's name. this is about wisconsinites. this is about getting the vote out. they certainly loved it when bill clinton came to milwaukee and milwaukee county is going to be a very key area when it comes to turnout. it could make the difference in this election. the fact is that the president obviously is the head of the party. the president could have had an impact here. the people understand he is a busy guy. they know they have to take care of business and they've been on this the last 16 months. despite what reince priebus is saying about outside influence, that's not how this started. this starts with a grassroots effort of people who felt they were being attacked and did not want to take the cuts in public education in the state. that's what started this. it wasn't outside groups and it snow balled from there. and reince priebus should be answering the call about how much money has come in from out of state from special interests on the right wing which is the total of $30 million. you know, the democrats could have put $10 million into this race and it would have been a fraction to what walker's people
11:03 am
have done as far as out of state money is concerned. so now we're down to the fundamental issues here. who do you believe? and what is going to influence you? there have been 1.2 million doors that have been knocked on. they feel very confident going into tomorrow. >> all indications on the ground point to the fact this race has been tightening ahead of the vote. the last marquette poll had scott walker and president obama holding similar leads. so this is where the dichotomy comes in. does that indicate to you a distaste by moderate and independents for this recall election? >> well, you know, the marquette poll is what it is. but let me give you another set of numbers. in 2010, 800,000 people did not vote in the state of wisconsin. that is how lack luster it was. if the democrats can get anywhere near the kind of numbers they had in 2008, scott walker is going to be toast. the fact is, in 2010, only 37%
11:04 am
of the voters in milwaukee county were engaged in voting. if tom barrett can get that number up to 50%, he has a real good chance of being the next governor of this state. and that's why walker in his team are very concern about the boots on the ground effort that has been put out by all the organizations here in wisconsin for the liberals and for the workers and so this will come down to who gets their people out. polls are tightening. every poll is tightening so far and i think we should point out, not to knock the credibility of the marquette poll but i think marquette should tell us who is paying for their poeg. >> what do you think this says after we get the vote counted tomorrow. does it bring finality to this debate? and does it mean if barrett does pull this out, does it mean that he could be apt for article down the line? does it set up this cyclical process? >> no. well, look. wisconsin, is a very politically
11:05 am
active state right now. this story has been going on for almost a year and a half. it didn't take place because it was the status quo. these people came in with reforms to cut and take away from middle class families and this has been the reaction to it. it has been a sustained effort here. this is so close that both parties that contacted attorneys to be in place for a recount. the state constitution for a recount is that it has to be one half of 1%, the closest of the vote total to kick into a recount and both parties have identified their attorneys and their teams on how they're going to handle that. so this is very, very close. it is all going to be about what kind of turnout it will be and that's why the door to door operation has been so important. but back to your original question. people are so energized here. i don't know if it would have made a difference if president obama showed up or not.
11:06 am
they certainly appreciated bill clinton. the latino community will be engaged if barren will win. >> we'll let you get back to your radio show. i will tell everybody, you can see more of ed schultz and his special coverage. you can join him for live coverage on the ed show for madison, wisconsin at 8:00 p.m. on msnbc. our thanks to ed. team obama ups the ante on its attacks for the massachusetts record with a brand new ad hitting the airwaves in key battleground states. take a look. >> it started like this. >> i speak the language of business. i know how jobs are created. >> but it ended like this. one of the worst economic records in the country. >> romney's campaign firing back, hitting the president where it hurts the most after a dismal jobs report on the economy. >> what we really have here is a deficit in leadership. and this president came into office without any prior experience running anything.

he never even ran a corner store. >> only thing that will change it are changing the policies and that means changing the person in the white house. >> let's bring in our news nation political panel. nationally syndicated talk show host michael smerconish who is an msnbc contributor and syndicated columnist and political analyst. it is good to have you here. the romney campaign released a response to this ad in part saying, having abandoned hope and change, the obama campaign only hopes to change the subject from an abysmal jobs report. it web on to say we're happy to compare the 4.7% unemployment rate mitt romney achieved in massachusetts to president obama's weak record any day. michael, would the president be better served to look ahead to the future in his own policies rather than focus on romney's record? or is now the time? focus on that record in massachusetts and compare and contrast. >> i think politically speaking the obama campaign is trying to define mitt romney. we presuppose that had because there were all those debates and
11:08 am
romney has captured the gop nomination, that the country has a fixed view of him. that's not the case and there are still a lot of minds that have yet to be made up relative to governor romney's record. i think they're trying to show that his businessman's credentials did not translate into job growth while he was the chief executive in massachusetts. >> david axelrod held a conference call and talked about this new ad. here's what he had to say. >> almost every measure, governor romney's jobs record in massachusetts was undistinguished and yet he positions himself as a job creator. >> if we go right to the numbers on this, unemployment in massachusetts, it improved during romney's tenure. is the obama campaign's strategy apt to back fire here? or is this a winning strategy to look at the fact that after all was said and done, that mitt
11:09 am
romney was able to take massachusetts from 50th to 47th? >> i think the president has to go in that direction. >> remember, the election is come down to the economy. that has been clearly defined and clearly put in place. that will be the talking points for both sides. both the president and mitt romney. you have a situation where mitt romney essentially has run on, tim job creator. he has put his record out there in massachusetts and essentially he has attacked the president over and over again saying i can create jobs. you destroy jobs. i think it is fair game for the president to take that tack. however, there is one problem here. i think the president at this point in time has to really sound and look presidential. in a sense, above the fray. it is okay to go after your opponent, mitt romney. but at the same time, you've got to continue to reinforce the vision that, look, i am a job creator. i came in with a bad situation.
11:10 am
i've done a number of things. i am going to do more. so he has to in a sense say, look, i have to convince the american people, forget what mitt romney is saying about me not creating jobs and him creating jobs. at the same time, i have a vision of the future that is even going to be more productive in terms of how i can create jobs and how i can go about it. so i think that's the task for the president. not just attack but also present a vision for the future. >> as we talk about what the president is doing right now, we all know he was not the first to bring up this line of attack on mitt romney's record as massachusetts governor. it happened during the primary. the whole season we repeatedly heard, 47 out of 50. when it came to job creation, ranked by state. why did the romney camp not push back with hard numbers and do so sooner? why wait until now? >> well, i think because it hasn't yet been made a campaign issue until the obama campaign went out and targeted first the role of bain capital and now the

record as the massachusetts chief executive. thomas, you might be interested to know that i've been speaking to callers for the last couple hours who are frustrated at the prospect that with these neck in neck polls comes a lack of resolve on either side to try to work together in the next five months and bring some change about and instead, it is as if everybody has now dug in wants to just get to the election. and is could not ten to run on the record as it stands today. that's a frustrating observation if true. >> it means nothing. everybody is worried that nothing will get done. it is like we're in this stuck phase. stuck in the mud, so to speak. as we take a look at the new obama ad, the campaign ad, it will run in these battleground states. the latest nbc "wall street journal" poll shows them in a dead heat in three of the state, colorado, nevada and iowa. is the president so uncertain of running hoist own record that the only way he sees a wide yepping in that poll gap is to chip away at romney's economic message? basically tear down that pillar
11:12 am
that is romney's strength? >> two parts to that. the first part is, yes. he has to go after. he has to go on the attack. you have to remember, romney has defined this election as i am the president, or i will be the president if you elected me that essentially will be the job creator. on the other hand, he has the record over there. to an extent with bain capital. that's been made an issue and of course, with his record as ceo, governor of massachusetts. so there are discrepancies there that i think are legitimate attack points. on the other hand, more directly, i still feel at the end of the day, you are the president. many people, the majority of people are going to say, mr. president, in the four years of your stewardship, what have you done? what is the record? we want to know the record? we want you to spell it out. more importantly, we want to know if you get another four years, what will you do to enhance your record? to essentially put to rest what mitt romney and the gop is saying. that essentially, you are a job killer. so i think that is the task of

the president and i think really, the election really is going to come down to that. how will either side convince, not to commit on either side but now we're talking about centrist independence. >> your quick final thought? >> my thoughts are that largely it will be a referendum on president obama. and that i understand the technique of going after romney's record as a massachusetts governor and executive at bain capital but largely, it rises and falls. how people perceive this president and what lies ahead. coming up next, teaming up. in a few hours, president clinton joins president obama on the trail for several high profile fund-raisers in new york city. plus, we're following developing news. prince phillip, hospitalized as britain celebrates the queen's diamond jubilee. we're going to get the latest on his condition. and you can always join our conversation on twitter. the fact is that for a lot of these programs, the sword is like 13% right off the top of every program in the state. >> this is ending the nation's debt limit which is white house press secretary jay carney just pointed out in his daily briefing men, was meant to be so that congress would be forced to make some tough choices. the fact that congress was able to be listed a it's a do nothing congress and force their hands. how is this going to come to a rematch coming up? >> the idea was to make it so difficult for republican that's they would get to the table and start about revenues. the idea was they didn't want these defense cuts. so far, that grand bargain on the budget, on the deficit and deficit reduction just hand
11:45 am
happened. and as the time goes by, the fact of the matter is, no matter who wins the presidential election in november, barack obama will be sitting at the white house on january 2nd when these cuts are scheduled to take place. somebody is going to have to go and negotiate with him. he doesn't have to do anything. the cuts will hit defense unless the republicans make a deal that democrats can accept. >> when we talk about a deal that democrats will accept, when we talk about no new taxes coming from the right. who is going to blink first? >> well, you know, lindsay graham, the senator from south carolina, does say, look. i'm not going to accept increases in the tax rate. but basically, nobody about increasing tax rates. what they're talking about closing loopholes and making changes to simplify the tax code. now, lindsay graham told me that he would accept the framework that was laid out in the president's deficit reduction commission. that one that was headed bier

skin boles. that envision, $2 billion in increases in revenues. now, actually tax rates would go down. but the tax code would be so simplified that there would be a surge of new revenues into the federal government. you know, americans with tax reform, and that group are saying, no. that is a tax increase. we're not going to accept that. but i think a lot of republicans are starting to say, you know, we may have to make some changes in that philosophy to head off these kinds of defense cuts. >> from the new york time, great to see you today. thank you. >> we're going to take you down to florida where george zimmerman is back in jail and his wife could also be in some legal trouble after prosecutors say the couple misled the court about zimmerman's finances. the 28-year-old surrendered yesterday. two days after the judge revoked his bail. with his wife's assistance, prosecutors say that zimmerman

11:48 am
failing to disclose the money in the online account is because the judge, judge kenneth lester, has a previous engagement for the entire week so he won't be here. and there is no other judge that will handle this bond hearing so he will remain here in jail at least until sometime next week. and it is not even certain if there is a bond hearing. if the judge will establish a bond that he can meet. that may be stricter. as you noted, it was $150,000. that was based on he and his family's assets. now that they've revealed that they have this account, and it continues to grow, it will be a sliding scale, perhaps, for the judge to determine how much to set the bond at. >> what is the implication for george zimmerman's wife? >> well, his wife shelly zimmerman is one who spoke and testified under oath to the court that she knew of no other assets that the family had. however, the prosecutor says that they have numerous recorded phone conversations of shelly

zimmerman talking to her husband here in the jail on the recorded phone lines at the jail. at times she was even at the credit union. she was making the call. and they say she was using coded language, talking about the money in the account. $135,000 plus dollars in there. in fact, the attorney, mark o'mara said his client is concern for his wife's safety. this is what he had to say. >> he is worried about himself. he is worried about his wife. his family. he is worried about everybody who has to be in hiding because of the enormous anger and frustration and hatred that has spurred from this case. >> reporter: so thomas, it is sort of a waiting game at this point. trayvon martin, the 17-year-old who was shot and killed, the lawyers representing his family say that while they do recognize everybody deserves the opportunity to post a bond, they say now that this anomaly has surfaced, the claim of not having more assets and then revealing there are more assets is an indication to them that
