governor scott walker still has a job after become the first governor in u.s. history to survive a recall attempt. walker's win is not only a defeat for milwaukee mayor, tom barrett, but also for union leaders who rallied against his controversial cuts. nbc's steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: it was closer than many expected, but the win could make wisconsin's governor scott walker, a gop superstar for taking on the unions in his state and surviving their counter move to take him down. >> tomorrow, the election is over, it's time to move wisconsin forward. >> the recall was born last year when walker stripped public employee unions of the right to bargain. some saw the vote as a plea view of the presidential election. conservatives had pumped $47 million into walker's campaign, a record. mitt romney backed walker and

said, voters rejected runaway government costs and liberal ideas. president obama backed the democrat. but fearful of alienating wisconsinites, he stayed away. as their presidential preferences in exit polls, wisconsin voters backed obama over romney by nine points. the republican governor won, but wisconsin could stay in president obama's column in the fall. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. well take a look at this. it is symbolic of how high the emotions in wisconsin ran over this recall. last night, mayor barrett was slapped. this is one of his own supporters, apparently she thought he conceded to walker, too early. well the death of al qaeda's second in command is being called the biggest victory in the war on terror since the death of osama bin laden. u.s. and pakistani officials confirm a drone strike in northwest pakistan has killed

yahya. the so-called media-savvy, general leader of al qaeda was captured about a decade ago but escaped in 2005. the white house called abu yahya al libi's death quote a major blow to the terror group. nine members of the jury have been selected for the trial of jerry san dusky. the former penn state assistant former football coach. he's facing 52 criminal counts for alleged sexual abuse of ten boys over 15 years. some of the alleged victims are expected to testify. now prosecutors reportedly have incriminating and bizarre letters that sandusky allegedly wrote to one of his accusers. nbc news has learned that prosecutors plan to start their case next week by reading copies of what are described as love letters to support the state's charges that sandusky repeatedly had improper sexual relations with the boy. well to england now, where it was the finale of four days of diamond jubilee celebrations

marking the 60 years of reign of queen elizabeth, the celebrations concluded with the royal family appearing on the balcony of buckingham palace. in a two-minute taped tv broadcast, the queen thanked her subjects for what she called the countless kindnesses shown to her. the queen's husband, prince phillip, han has been unable to attend ceremonies in the last two days due to hospital treatment for a bladder infection. prince charles says his father is getting betterer and watched the festivities on tv. in pennsylvania, or in philadelphia, the violent arrest of one man is now under investigation. cell phone video shows the 18-year-old suspect clearly resisting two officers. but when two other officers arrive on the scene they're shown punching him, kicking him and swinging their batons at him. police say he resisted arrest after a crash. the family of the suspect say he

has staples in his head as a result of the scuffle. the officers have been placed on desk duty. in colorado, what is wrong with this picture? that's not a difficult question to answer. plenty, say police, it shows a child safety seat being used to hold a can of gas. instead of a toddler sitting right beside the seat. the mom claims that her little boy constantly crawls out of the safety seat. she was cited for that and because she and her teenager weren't using their own seat belts. in florida, fireworks used to celebrate a high school graduation misfired. one of them blew up in the bleachers, six people suffered minor injuries. and finally from california to connecticut, are you looking up, star-gazers put on their special glasses and telescopes and looked toward the sky to catch the rare sight of venus crossing between the sun and the

earth. if you didn't see it, bad news, it won't happen for another century. now for look at your national weather, we turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins. i don't have those solar sunglasses on hand to catch these things. so we just put them on our show. >> i'll get you a pair. >> you'll look nice on them. >> the video looked impressive, if you did miss it, probably better than what you would have saw with the glasses. good morning, let's deal with the severe storms yesterday. texas, we had a few and also in montana we had a couple of tornadoes, i think the largest coverage of severe storms was down in georgia. this this is the region that's been in a horrible drought, we appreciated the rain and there was a lot of bad storms headed towards savannah, georgia. you can notice the rain here, savannah up to charleston, probably some heavier downpours on interstate 16, heading from macon to to savannah. and for albany, georgia, a few more showers and storms for you.

we'll see more strong storms late today around colorado. it's still cool up in new england, temperatures in the 40s and 50s, your last chilly morning. we'll warm it up from here. and some of the warmth that was in texas yesterday spread northwards, it's going to warm up the great lakes through your afternoon. as far as the weather map goes, it's very quiet for this time of year. the best chance for severe storms, northeast portions of colorado, from denver to fort collins, out into nebraska, we could see a few tornadoes late today in rural sections of northeast colorado or out towards western nebraska, i don't expect a big tornado outbreak. your forecast for this wednesday, a pretty quiet day. there will be afternoon showers and storms from new england southwards down to washington, d.c. and new york, but they'll be hit-and-miss, just like yesterday afternoon. most of the day will be dry, it will be sunny and nice, we could get a 20-minute shower or storm late in the afternoon. the southeast, a much greater coverage of showers and storms. areas in florida will be dodging

the test detects cancer cells that have broken free from a tombor in the breast and could help researchers develop tailored treatments based on a woman's likelihood of a cancer recurrence. the issue of same-sex marriage is one step closer to being decided by the u.s. supreme court. the federal appeals court that struck down california's proposition 8 ban on gay unions has refused to reconsider the ruling. and supporters now have 90 days to petition the supreme court. in mississippi, henry curtis jackson junior was executed by lethal injection for the 1990 murders of his four young nieces and nephews. he was put to death despite the pleas of his two sisters to spare the brother who killed their children. and miss pennsylvania has resigned. charging last weekend's miss usa pageant in las vegas was fixed. she claims someone correctly told her the pageant's top five finishers before the show even started. she called the pageant among

other things, quote, fraudulent and trashy. pageant officials deny her charges and claims she told them she was resigning due to the inclusion of transgender contestants. now here's your "first look" at wall street. the dow opens at 12,127, after adding 26 points yesterday. the s&p was up seven, the nasdaq gained 18. taking a look at overseas trading this morning. in tokyo, the nikkei jumped 151 points, while in hong kong, the hang seng climbed 261. well a little upbeat economic data did help stocks recover some lost ground wednesday. data showing the service sector improved in may outweighed worries about the eurozone's fiscal crisis. bank of america rose 3%, while jpmorgan added 3. investors are hoping for signs of action from the european central bank's interest rate meeting today after the g-7

talks offered no new debt solutions. today the fed releases its beige book survey as speculation swirls over whether it will step in with another round of stimulus. a possibility "the wall street journal" reports is back on the table. among market movers, jcpenney fell 4% after its ceo said his new pricing strategy confused customers. today the nasdaq will reveal how it plans to compensate firms that lost an estimated $100 million in that botched facebook ipo. speaking of facebook, yesterday facebook hit a new low after falling nearly 4%. government-backed mortgage giant, fannie mae has appointed its top lawyer to rae place its outgoing ceo. in washington, senate republicans blocked a democratic bill calling for equal pay in the workplace, saying the protection for woman already exists. and that the bill would only create more paperwork for the government. and finally on a more proactive side, italy is trying to revamp the face of its boardrooms with so-called pink

quotas, requiring companies insure one-third of their board members are women by 2015. the gop blocking equal pay bill. last night on "politics nation" gillibrand said she thought the proposal addressed fairness and the economy. >> this is about opportunity for women to get equal pay for equal work that men do. it's about nearly every american family. most of our american families are two-income families. when one wage earner is not earning her fair share it's going to hurt the family and it's going to hurt the children. this is about fairness and about making sure that we really untap the economic potential of women. if they're only earning 78 cents on that dollar, that's money being taken away from that family for food, clothing, everything a child needs to grow. if you allowed woman to earn a dollar for a dollar for equal

welcome back to "first look," i'm lynn berry. in sports, last night in the nba's eastern finals, the celtics had an answer to every miami move. taking them one win away from the finals. here's nbc's fred roggin. good morning, chris bosh returned for the miami heat last night, but even that was not enough to stop the boston celtics. game five of the eastern conference finals, bosh received a standing ovation when he entered the game in the first quarter. played just 14 minutes, had nine points. boston never led in the first half, but capped the third with a 15-1 run. dulg from downtown and the celts up by five. miami eanswered with a run of

their own. dwyane wade had 27. down the stretch it appeared boston wanted it more. brandon bass was blocked by wade. rajon rondo kicked the rebound to michael pietrus who drained the three. ray allen came up with a ball, found paul pierce, swung at pietrus for another three, end a minute to play, paul pierce with the dagger in lebron james's face. boston with a shocking 94-90 win. ma hideki matsui made his return to the rays. bases-cleared bomb to right field. to philly, cliff lee was cruising when he made a mistake in the eighth. the dodgers harrow with a shot deep to left, juan pierre couldn't make the grab, in came two, dodgers took the lead. despite striking out 12, lee came up short once again. he's yet to win a game this
