in the country speak at the national association of latino elected and appointed officials in orlando, governor romney gave a few new details about his overall immigration plan but no specifics what he would do for those children brought here through no fault of their own. >> some people have asked if i will let stand the president's executive order. the answer is that i will put in place my own long term solution that will replace and super seed the president's temporary measure. as president i won't settle for stop gap measures. >> now let's bring in our "news nation" political panel. eugene robinson is associate editor and prize winning columnist for "the washington post" as well as an msnbc analyst. and ramos is an nbc contributor and "usa today" columnist. very different topics, both being addressed by the president and mitt romney here. the president still hitting hard
11:01 am
on this student loan interest rate. obviously it's an important issue in that some of the new numbers show people owe more on student loans than credit card debt. is that still a hot topic >> it's still a big topic, tamron, because as you say the volume of student loans is so huge. and a lot of this new volume is not -- not students as we think of them. they are not 20-year-old students going to college. a lot of people who are older, who are in their 30s or 40s who have gone back to school and who have incurred a lot of student debt. these people vote more often than younger students do, so there's some political power in this issue. >> is it more about showing another example of presenting another example of this very unpopular congress in the president's word standing in the way of helping folks in need right now? >> exactly. it's another of the litany, why
11:02 am
don't they pass a jobs bill, why don't they help us in various ways to stimulate the economy towards growth. and, again, this is going to be a simple thrust of the president's campaign so we're going hear him sound more of these notes as time goes on. >> well, obviously, all ears and eyes were on mitt romney today in florida, the important state. mr. romney started out his remarks by saying there are some people who say that identify not answer this question. let me play what he presented as the non-answer to the question, let's play what mr. romney said. >> hispanics have been hit disproportionately hard while the national unemployment is still above 8% and has been for 40 straight months. hispanic unemployment is at 11%. as president i would reallocate green cards to those seeking to keep their families under one

[ applause ] and will eliminate other forms of bureaucratic red tape that keep families from coming together. as president i will stand for a path to legal status for anyone who is willing to stand up and defend this great nation through military service. [ applause ] ? >> so he talked about the unemployment rate. obviously critical. talked about transformation in the green card process. talked about people who serve in the military, being able to have a path to citizenship. that one is not new. he did not talk about the new deportation policy of the president. >> right. that's what everyone was waiting to hear him weigh in on. i think sometimes with a speech it's as much as what you don't say -- >> in this speech especially a week later. >> people want to know where does he stand on this issue. as far as undocumented people in
11:04 am
the military not people who you can join the military as a path to citizenship. people who are in the military now that are undocumented can earn a path to citizenship. it's nothing new. he may have made a mistake at the beginning, he invoked ronald reagan. ronald reagan is a huge hero in the hispanic community. >> as you well know eugene americans have selective memory when it comes to ronald reagan and amnesty. with that said how would you score mitt romney at this point. how long can you continue and criticize and say this is about politics without an answer to follow and it is legitimate to say all things are about politics. we know the president wants to be re-elected. if you come with a right hook don't you have to come with a left. >> do you. i'm floored right now, tamron -- i thought -- people asked me earlier in the week when will mitt romney answer the question, the basic question, what would you do with this order. do you support this or not.
11:05 am
i've been telling people surely on thursday when he speaks he'll have to answer the question. and i'm just amazed that he managed to make it through the speech without answering the question. i don't see what that gains him. i do see what it loses him or the opportunity that it costs him, which was to begin to make amends with a community that's deeply suspicious of him. >> let's bring in the director of policy and legislative affairs. thank you so much for joining me. >> thanks for having me. >> so let me get your take, first of all, the response from the audience. it was hard for us to gauge not being there what kind of reception the governor received. first let's start there. how would you categorize it or characterize it. >> there were many officials in the audience. they were proud on having governor romney there.
11:06 am
it's a recognition to the power of the community, the size of the community and the relevant role of the latino community will play in 2012. during the speech, indeed, the reaction was sort of mixed. but at the very end there was a huge crowd that wanted to take pictures and shake hands with the governor. again, i think that that is a part of the pride that was sensed in that room to have both candidates attend the conference thursday and then again tomorrow the president will be there. >> absolutely. let me ask you regarding the question that everyone was hoping to hear a specific answer regarding the president's new deportation policy, whether or not mitt romney would follow suit, whether the governor believes it is wrong. do you believe he adequately answered that question? >> in my opinion he did not give sufficient detail as to what he
11:07 am
would donor did he state whether or not he agrees with what the president has done. he did indeed call at it political move. he said that he would replace it with long term solution that would sue per seed it. he did not name or give details as to what that would look like nor did he state -- nor did he contradict statements that he's made in the past with regard to the dream act. >> was it a successful speech in your estimation? >> i think that it was touched on the economy which indeed is priority number one for the community because for like every other community out there, like all individuals we are seeing, you know, a real problem with the economic downturn. in terms of immigration which to me is the issue that gains him the respect of the latino community, to then potentially intake the rest of the message. i think it may have been just a first step. he did not talk about dream and his position on that nor did he
11:08 am
talk about self-deportation which is troublesome. what he said while campaigning in the primaries which is different from what he's starting to do now is that he would be for making sure that documented illegal immigrants feel the hurt both themselves and their entire families of their situation, and of the different positions that the governor will take so that they will self-deport, so that their hurt, the unwanted cruelty of the position will be felt to such a degree that they will leave voluntarily and that's very problematic to us. >> you glenn let me bring you back to that. to max's point. the governor pi strotd tissue of the economy, 11% one employment rate in the latino community. he said several times you deserve better, perhaps a glint of the message he's to speak
11:09 am
before the naacp. seems his message clearly goes to that point you deserve better whether you're latino, black, white, woman or a man here. >> i think that's all well and good. i think it's a very good thing from the romney campaign point of view that he attended the conference, that he went into the lion's den essentially. that's a good thing. i want shows political courage and a willing to stand up in front of people who don't necessarily agree with you. however -- >> does it show courage? when you know you need some of these people, how courageous is that if i know i need a certain percentage of this group to get into office, he knows they are going to throw tomatoes at him. how courageous is it? >> getting to the however, tamron. the however in this case is that he didn't cross -- in my view, he didn't cross the threshold. the threshold for speaking to the latino community is the
11:10 am
immigration issue. not that all latinos agree on illegal immigration, and exactly what to do, although most, i think, do agree on the dream act. but to have the sense that someone who is openly hostile to immigrants, to the point where he's hostile to members of my family, people who live down the street, members of my community, that's a threshold issue in that way and i don't think he got over that threshold this time, and, therefore, i don't think he did himself all that much good. >> raul is nodding yes. >> agree with him because immigration policy is tearing families apart. our economic policies are not. to me the big take away from this speech we'll deal with immigration. it could be a knock on the door at midnight depending on how you look at it. he did show up.
11:11 am
i'll give him that. >> we don't see you enough. it's courageous to come on "news nation." >> tamron, to you i have no titles, i'm just eugene and i'll be back. >> thank you. in the past few hours john boehner denied allegations of a witch-hunt against attorney general eric holder of the fast and furious investigation, a contempt of congress vote against holder is scheduled before a full house next week. >> the house will vote next week on the contempt resolution unless these documents that we're looking for are, in fact, turned over. this is about getting to the truth. >> minority leader nancy pelosi fired back today at her republican colleagues. >> what we have seen is a shameful display of abuse of power by the republicans in the house of representatives. >> and joining me now from washington is congresswoman jackie sphere, a democratic
11:12 am
member of the house oversight and reform committee. let me start off with attorney general holder in denmark answering more questions about what we all witnessed yesterday. let me play his remarks. >> we put before the committee a proposal that would have allowed for the resolution of that matter consistent with the way in which these have been resolved in the past through negotiation. i think the possibility still exists that it can happen in that way. >> congressman cummings said yesterday to chairman issa it didn't have to happen, it didn't have to come to this. what are your feelings today? >> i think that's absolutely the case. this should be and still can be negotiated, and typically that's what happens with contempt resolutions. what's interesting here is there's never been an attorney general that's been held in contempt by the house ever before. this will be a first.
11:13 am
secondly, this is not a contempt proceeding over someone who hasn't come before the house. he's come before the committees nine times. he's presented more than 6700 pages of documents to the committee. what we are talking about is inner office conversations, memos that took place after february 4th when a letter had been sent to senator grassley saying that there had been no knowledge within the ag's office. that letter was rescinded in december of last year. that the ag has been totally forth coming. this is sandbox politics. it's an effort by the republicans to try and move us away from doing what the work is we should be doing. what are we doing about dealing with the students loan problem. what are we doing about creating more jobs. what are we doing about the surface transportation bill that's stuck. what are we doing about getting people back to work and getting them the opportunity to stay in their homes.
11:14 am
none of those issues are being taken care of. >> you and i both know the republican party says listen those things are obviously important but you have an agent brian terry who lost his life. they point to a number in the thousands of people in mexico who have lost their lives and perhaps these guns involved in "fast and furious" could be linked to some of these crimes. and another congressman said you can't ignore this as a partisan game and just today speaker boehner also saying the white house invoking executive privilege is an admission that the white house was involved in this decision and misled congress. >> that's absolutely not true. executive privilege is oftentimes asserted for the executive branch at the administrative level. in fact attorney general casey under the former president, under the republican administration had provided that kind of counsel in terms of being able to assert executive
11:15 am
privilege for various departments under the president. the president had no knowledge about this. the attorney general had no knowledge about this. and if we really are serious about this, if we really care about brian terry's family and wanting to get to the bottom of this you got to ask the question why did the alcohol and tobacco and firearms office within the department of justice never tell anyone above the atf head as to what was going on. that's abuse of power. that's a rogue operation. we got fix that. furthermore all the gun walking it's still going on. it's going on right now. those firearms are getting into the hands of the cartels in mexico because we don't have decent laws on the books for firearms. >> congresswoman sphere, thank so you much. we greatly appreciate it. hope to talk with you soon. anticipation is building until the supreme court rules on two monumental rules. the health care mandate and

11:17 am
repeated violations. then they shift their policy and levied fines against fox for two award shows for fleeting expletives against nicole ritchey and cher who in 2002 and 2013 uttered words that i can't even say or shouldn't on cable and then against abc for showing a brief glimpse of a nude woman on an episode of nypd blue. today the supreme court said the rules were vague, they kept changing so much but declined to get to the bigger issue about the indecency ruling themselves having a policy violate broadcasters first amendment reits. >> for another day obviously the decisions on those monumental cases, great anticipation to say the least. >> reporter: so we'll have at least one probably two decision days next week. monday for certain. that's absolutely set. then they will add other days possibly thursday, possibly wednesday, we're still waiting for the big health care decision. the ruling on arizona

sources tell nbc news sandusky's adopted son matt seen here arriving in court yesterday was prepared to give damaging testimony about his father if sandusky took the stand. matt sandusky was mentioned during testimony at trial. the man known as victim number four said matt became nervous while they were all showering together after playing racquet ball together and that jerry start ad soap fight with the alleged victim. he said quote at that point matt got up and left. well not got up but turned off the shower, went out and into another shower. joining me live from washington, d.c., kathleen kane former prosecutor. let's start off why matt sandusky if he has this damaging testimony why wouldn't he be called to the stand. >> the judge may have preclude it because it came in too late or uncharged act. the judge may have precluded it
11:35 am
for that reason. nonetheless the fact that matt was there and then left and precluded the defendant from testifying in a sense is really a bombshell and it's very surprising. >> you know, would it be usual or have you ever heard, i should say, of a situation where a deal is made in the sense that some of the reporting was that sandusky wanted to testify, they went to the judge's chambers, matt sandusky's testimony came up and that's when sandusky walked back out and we knew he would not be taking the stand. could a deal be made to keep him off the stand, meaning jerry sandusky? >> legally speak ug can't make that sort of a deal and i'm sure the prosecutors nor the defense or judge would have allowed something like that took cure. in all likelihood what happened is they went behind closed doors to find out whether the defendant would testify or not. the prosecution said as they have to, if he does then we do have a rebuttal witness. this is who it is. this is what he'll be testifying to. then they give the defense the
11:36 am
