we begin this morning with remembering the victims. more than 10,000 people gathered in aurora, colorado, last night to pay tribute to and honor the 12 dead and dozens others injured in the theater shooting that happened early friday morning. president obama was also in aurora sunday. all this as the community prepares for the first glimpse of the 24-year-old shooting suspect since the attack in a hearing in just a few hours from now. nbc's leanne gregg has the very latest from aurora. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the suspect's legal team is expected to go inside the theater later today to look at bullet wholes and what's left of the carnage. part of the process of putting together a defense while the city still mourns. more than 10,000 people gathered in unity to honor the victims.

>> millions of people are with us and helping to share our burden of grief at this moment. >> reporter: a sunday vigil to help heal. in all, 12 are among the dead. a 6-year-old girl, a navy sailor, an air force reservist and two young men who died shielding their girlfriends from bullets. fathers, sons, daughters, each with lives cut short. the president addressed a grieving community and talked privately with families of the victims. >> my main task was to serve as a representative of the entire country and let them know we are thinking about them at this moment and will continue to think about them each and every day. >> reporter: the suspect, 24-year-old james holmes, today will be advised of his rights and the judge will set a date for the formal filing of charges. it's the start of a legal process that may take months. >> we will convict him.

yes. >> reporter: at issue whether the prosecutor will seek the death penalty. the defense will likely argue whether holmes is mentally competent while the city is forever changed. evidence will include what was found inside the suspect's apartment, explosive devices meant to kill were removed and destroyed yesterday. officials say today other residents of the building may be allowed to return. veronica, back to you. great, thank you. poverty in america is increasing to levels not seen in the last 50 years. the u.s. census data for 2011 to be released during the fall peak of the presidential's campaign is expected to show the poverty rate rising to as high as 15.7%. that would be the highest rate since 1965 erasing gains from the war on poverty that created medicaid, medicare and other social welfare programs. the weak economy is being blamed especially long-term unemployment during the

recession as is reduced aid from the government. authorities say 11 people were killed and another 12 injured all in one pickup when it went off the road and slammed into two trees in rural south texas. the cause of the accident is being investigated but a trooper at the scene says a blown-out tire could be to blame. witnesses claim the truck's cab and bed were packed with illegal immigrants but that has yet to be confirmed by usuals. u.s. customs officials are taking part in the investigation. here's a look at the other news going on around america today. in new orleans a 17-story building came crashing down on purpose. crews imploded the old palace hotel, also known as the grand palace, to make room for a new medical center. in florida a hospital that stood for four years met its own demise. the seven-story facility was turned to rubble in less than four seconds after closing its doors two years ago. also in florida, big trouble

on a small runway when a massive c-17 military cargo jet landed at the wrong airport and nearly ran out of runway. the pilot apparently thought he was arriving at mcdale air force base four miles away. the airport he landed at is reserved for smaller planes and helicopters but the crew was later successfully able to takeoff. in massachusetts a woman fought back with mangos after seeing two men steal money from her soldier's market. one of the armed robbers hit the woman's head with his gun. the thieves were later captured and the mango-throwing mother-in-law is a-okay. finally in new york, what better way to spend a day at the beach. the shoreline was turned into art during the 22nd annual sand castle contest along the famed coney island. and if you think you can come up with something so elaborate. the pros say you're right because all it takes is water,

some time, some patience, some practice and a whole lot of sand, i guess you can say. now for a look at the national weather, we turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins. it was a nice day at the beach over the weekend. sunday was gorgeous. yeah, new england was not quite as warm but it was sunny and nice. florida, trouble down there with a lot of thunderstorms for a lot of people to deal with and a little tropical moisture rolled through. here's the weather pattern as we start our week. the middle of the country still struggling with the incredibly hot summer conditions and the drought. this week as we go throughout the week we'll see two cold fronts coming down to cool us off and kind of knock the heat dome down. we'll see one cold front today with thunderstorms, numerous thunderstorms. minneapolis, chicago, right through the lower great lakes, inyou would including buffalo and pittsburgh and through new england throughout the afternoon. there will be stormy afternoon. the excessive heat warnings remain from kansas city to des moines, omaha to topeka and

other areas where the ohio and mississippi rivers meet. how hot will it be? just another day. it is incredible. we are doing this day after day here. 100 to 105 from nebraska to kansas, oklahoma, all of missouri and portions of illinois. some of that heat today moves into chicago, too. 98 doesn't exactly sound comfortable. humidity is ahead of the front to make it feel worse. tomorrow we do get the cold front to dip down. it cools down in chicago and detroit, but we won't get the cold front into kansas city and st. louis until thursday. so that's kind the timing on that. kansas city stays about 100 to 105 until wednesday. then slight relief. it's amazing the summer, even though we get the relief, it will knock it down to the 90s instead of the 100s. today's forecast has the umbrella with it. the showers and storms are out there this morning. i'll show you those coming up in ten minutes. back to you. thanks, bill. earnings for this week, a big

in san diego. more than 300 military members participated. hey, when it comes to tax, mitt romney has a lot of company in washington. over the past three months mcclatchy newspapers asked all 535 members of the house and senate to release their tax records. and get this, only 17 agreed to. only 17 agreed to do it. yep. and "the huffington post" reports that one of the few things that john boehner and nancy pelosi agree on is they don't want to release their tax returns. the tampa bay times says congresswoman michele bachmann criticized about her remarks on a state department aidcould be a headliner just before the republican convention. and speaking out, it turns out that former president george w. bush and form h.w. bush will both miss the convention.

they both decided to skip and one cites health reasons. massachusetts is being considered as the keynote speaker at the democratic convention in september. and "newsday" is reporting that the rental apartment that president obama lived in while studying in columbia, new york, in 1981 is up for grabs. the president paid $360 in rent. well, the price now is $2400. yep. and in a speech event someday louisiana's president hugo chavez calls the capitalist elite like mitt romney. he says deep down he's a good guy. that's your morning dish of scrambled politics. and now here's your first look at how wall street will kickoff the day.

the saw opens as 12,822. the s&p tumbled 13 and the nasdaq plunged 40. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo the nikkei shot down 161 points while in hong kong the hang seng plummeted 587. so far earning season has been much better than expected but this week reports from three big companies will put the trend to the test. apple reports tomorrow with expectations high. a strong showing could not only lift text but it could give traders something else to focus on other than euro debt. wednesday's focus will be on the dow and results from caterpillar and economic bell weather. on thursday facebook posts its results following the disastrous ipo debut. the facebook stock closed at $11 and change with the original price at $38. in asia the euro fell to a 12-year low against the yen in

miss when they run the 100 meters. >> synchronized swimming? >> i'll watch the highlights. are there highlights of synchronized swimming? well, good morning, everyone. we have showers and thunderstorms continuing to roll through new york state this morning. a pretty good strong storm in the southern portions of the new york state freeway heading to westchester and crossing the hudson river here shortly. also through upstate new york, numerous showers, too. so that will be the case today. hit and miss showers and storms in many areas of new england. of course, the afternoon hours is when the meet heating of the day is at the maximum to see the best showers and storms. warmest air down here from philadelphia to d.c., we are on the hot side. new england with the clouds in the 80s. watch out for thunderstorms near chicago this afternoon. you'll be very hot and toasty. then the storms will roll through and cool you off. not so lucky in the middle of the country. so slight risk of severe storms today from cleveland to pittsburgh, detroit, buffalo, all the way back down through the ohio valley. we are right along the cold front. that's good news.
