we're going to do four more years of this? >> it's one thing to criticize the president, and he did do that. the other question is what is he going to do that's different. he also did not give a specific answer to a question from a woman who asked about deductions he would eliminate. here's what john kerry said on "morning joe" today. >> he's trying to fake it to the american people because he doesn't want to tell you about the home mortgage, college credit, doesn't want to tell you about state and local taxes. he fakes it. you have a man running for president on the central issue of our time and he's not being straight with american people. >> he is. he does have specifics. he talks about his specific plans. he is going to open up small business to hire people. he's going to stop the over-regulation. he's going to keep taxes low on eryone that makes $250,000 or less. and he's not going to change the deductions for those people.

and what was interesting to me was to see opinions i didn't agree with. >> there's been research in political campaigns we are most influenced by our neighbors, our friends if we're an undecided voter. maybe this is the way we access more of our neighbors and friends. >> it is. and we like to -- just like in our real lives we like to be with people we agree with more. we don't like to be with people we don't disagree with. in social media it's the same. to find some resource that's not biased at all to see it all is the best way to touch social media. and see what people's opinions really are. i mean, binders full of women, they'll be talking about that one quote for a long time. >> 7.2 million tweets last night compared to 10 million than the first debate. another to read into it? >> nothing to read into it. if you want to tweet while you're watching, it's very hard to have a thought and be listening at the same time.
7:46 am
>> you feel like you're missing something. after the debate the twitter index had president obama at a six-point lead. the index measures basically the candidates, the feelings towards the candidates. what does this index 39 versus 33 tell us about how people are feeling? >> it's just one of many indicators that i'd look at. i mean, what i would say about that nurnl is generally speaking it marries up to how much better obama is doing than romney in social media. i've said it with you before. that to me, that is the swing vote of this election. it is social media and who uses it best. it continues to be obama. >> back to your point. obviously social media is a great way to stay engaged, but it's not necessarily the best way to get an objective opinion. i try for example when i'm doing it and a lot of journalist dos this, we're just basically reporting on what we see, but most of twitter out there especially from your friends is opinion. >> it is opinion.
7:47 am
i mean, look. i thought obama won. surprise. i'm biased. i thought he won. i know people that thought romney won. >> but did you think he won the first debate. >> no. i thought that that was too obvious of a loss. >> so where do you see this going? how is this going to impact us? we still have one more debate and an awful lot of people who will be going to the polls between now and november 6th. >> what i find incredible is at this stage right now, so many undecided voters. what you'll see -- >> the race has basically been dead even for much of this campaign. >> it depends on the poll of the hour. i mean, what they say about social media, that was so seven seconds ago. before i came on the show, it's different after the show. you've got to follow it at breathtaking speeds. >> you've got 12 minutes to see if anything changed. thanks for coming.

we're talking about ohio. just how important is to it the election? sandwiched between the debates, both converge on the buckeye states. they're on their way. mark murray joins me now to look at how ohio plays this critical role in the road to victory for both candidates. how big is it? >> it's really big, chris. and actually heading into last night's debate, it was seen as the firewall for president obama. we'd seen a lot of movement for mitt romney. but president obama is doing

well. if he ends up winning ohio, it makes his path to 270 very easy. if he wins ohio, iowa, wisconsin, he's above to be able to win. conversely, if for mitt romney to be able to get to 270 without ohio, he pretty much has to run the table. which is a very tough task. so on election night, i think the one state we're all going to be looking for in the returns will be ohio. >> and where in ohio are we looking? this is always fascinating. i've spent a lot of time in past elections in suburban columbus. >> you nailed it on the hd. that is a swing area. barack obama won in 2008. i think whoever wins columbus this time around will once again win the buckeye state. >> let's say romney takes ohio, then what's the president's path to victory. >> then he almost has to run the table on the other states. his path to victory becomes much narrower. he has to win in colorado, win

in nevada, win in iowa, win in new hampshire. it becomes harder for him. maybe we could win out in the west, maybe in virginia. but you take ohio off the map and all of a sudden it becomes harder for president obama and much harder for mitt romney. >> what's our sense going on? what we seen the president do, he's been pounding hard on the auto industry. a lot of people didn't know just how much jobs depend on the auto industry in ohio. we're used to talking about michigan. what's playing there? do we have a sense of it there? >> in addition to the auto industry, he's been playing up the demographic you cited. suburban women particularly in the columbus area, in the cincinnati area. also in the cleveland area. those places in last night's debate, i think they got their message across. they want to talk about things that put mitt romney on the offensive. they were able to do that last night. >> couple of other swing states

we often hear mentioned when we talk about ohio being critical. florida, virginia, where are we there? >> those are the states where mitt romney probably made the best gains in the past two weeks after the first debate performance. all of a sudden if those were maybe tossed out slightly an edge to barack obama, all of a sudden now they're to mitt romney. things have been reversed. we're going to get a sense of how much this past debate impacted things. we'll find out in the polls starting next week. >> you were in the spin room last night but giving us facts this morning. good to see you here. that's going to wrap up this hour of "jansing and co." richard louis is in again. >> it's a mono y mono era. for reaction to the second verbal jab-filled showdown. was there a clear victory or was it a draw? we'll also get reaction from
