police to crack. they stage dog fights everywhere in the midwest. >> they are very mobile. more so than anything else. most of the narcotics deals we work on, it's structured. this one, as of the day, you don't know the precise location, precise time. they constantly move. so virtually all of our big arrests, all of the big fights, all of the big breeders that we've got, almost all of them have been on tips from somebody else. >> the role that informants play in these cases is critical. it only works if police recruit those who already belong to the subculture. >> the people involved, they all run in the same circles so they all know each other. it's one of the hard things to catch. whenever i see a face, they might pull the plug on them. >> a major push by cook county

sheriff has led to stricter dog laws. it's no lon der a misdemeanor to attend a dogfighting match. it's a felony. authorities have more leverage to use against arrestees. one result is they can squeeze suspects for intel. >> anyone who is going to attend these where animals are being killed, they derserve to have a felony attached to them. >> how many fights? >> eight to nine fights. >> if you're talking 30 minutes, a fight, that is four hours of fighting? >> it's all day. we call it rodeos. >> five days before a warrant, pursing a lead into an alleged dogfighting tournament on the city's west side.

it's one of many expected to take place over the holiday. >> halloween is the biggest day of dogfighting. it's the super bowl. financially they save up all year in order to bet on as well as this is is the day that they all have their dogs trained to fight. >> it's going to be a good catch. >> you have the guys who sell drugs that bet on the dogfights. probably like 500,000. >> at a single fight? >> at a single fight. >> davis began working with his informant six months ago while he was locked up on a drug possession charge. we're calling him "slim" to protect his identity. he proved himself as an informant then and is back on the street now. but this is the first time for him to give up his dogfighting connections. >> i've been fighting dogs since i was like 13. i was really good at training

them. they call it shaping them. i really can't stand the fights no more. i can't take it when they bite each other in the mouth, they call it crunches. when they've got a dead lock on them. >> i heard that once the dog is done fighting, they will kill them in front of everybody. >> only time they kill them is when they lose their money. they shoot them in the head, you know. >> i mean, these are truly defective human beings. so what should we expect when we go in there? >> 40 to 50 guys. >> 40 to 50, huh? >> everybody is sitting around in chairs, standing up behind the other guys and all of the dogs are in one room in cages. like 50 cages.

possession is possession. but when you deal with people that take care of children, you know, when you deal with a mother, a grandmother, it's a little bit different. they are less likely to talk than the men. because i think women have more to lose. they have children and that's always a deciding factor for a woman to divulge any information. you know, their families are still out in the world. they are not as ready to give up that sort of information. >> rather than risk putting their loved ones in danger, many women will choose to fight their cases or serve their time in prison. >> it's easy to get in here but it's hard as h echl ll to get out. you is accept what you did and then you deal with it. >> i'm in here for first-degree
