the church is sticking with the papal election updates via smoke signal. keir simmons joins us from the vatican. what's happening there today? >> reporter: good morning. just 24 hours away from start of the conclave and we can show you the live picture where you can see they are putting up a curtain in front of their main window at the center of that building. you can see that's the balcony. that is where the new pope will emerge once he is elected. the voting will begin on tuesday afternoon after they said mass in the morning and there willing one vote on tuesday afternoon and then four votes per day and what will happen is that they will begin by voting for a wide range of candidates we think but then it will begin to narrow down. one of them needs a 2/3 majority

to be selected. there is already speculation about who might be selected. people are talking about angelo scola, or one from the u.s. we wait to see who will be chosen. >> keir simmons, thanks so much for that. now to the korean peninsula where there is a fresh round of threats from the north. in response to the start of 11 days of military maneuvers, north korea says it will scrap the 1953 armistice that ended the korean war and launch a nuclear attack on the u.s. so far pyongyang has cut them off. they have no intention of attacking the north. defense secretary chuck haguele is rejecting some pretty harsh accusations against hamid

karzai. prior to the meeting between the two men, karzai said the u.s. was in cahoots with the taliban. the comments came during hagel's first visit to the region at defense secretary. the taliban quickly denied the claims as did hagel. >> i told the president it was not true, that the united states was unilaterally working with the taliban in trying to negotiate anything. the fact is any prospect for peace or political settlements, that has to be led by the afghans. >> hagel said he's optimistic the u.s. will stick to its plans for troop withdrawal. an ohio community is in mourning today after six teens were killed in a tragic crash.

the sport utility vehicle was traveling at a high speed when it hit guard rail, flipped over and landed in a pond. two of the eight people did survive and were treated at the hospital and released. it was the deadliest car accident in ohio in years. the vehicle was taken without permission. as the sequester budget cuts go into effect, we're learning more about what specific programs are feeling that pain. members of the military looking to earn a college degree are some of the cuts first casualties. tuition assistance for those in the army and the marines has already been suspended. military flight teams will most likely be no shows at air shows across the country this spring leaving dozens of host cities with smaller crowds and lost tourism dollars for local businesses. visitors to national parks will also soon encounter locked restrooms and fewer park rangers. they have already stopped plowing snow from some roads saving an estimated $30,000 a day. one thing that hasn't been scaled back is the order of f-35 fighter jets.

the white house? >> man, you guys are crack addicts. you really are obsessed with all of this politics. >> crack addicts. goodness. republican strategist steve schmidt says the republican party has what he called a structural problem due to the lack of women leaders in the gop. >> we don't have enough women at the table, but any company, any organization in today's day and age that doesn't give equal opportunity to women, that doesn't advance women to the table is going to be an organization that has difficulty competing. >> well, the white house is dismissing reports about next january's party for first lady's michelle obama's 50th birthday. they report that beyonce and adele will report at the party are, quote, 100 percent percent false. they said it was fabricated by a british tabloid.

former mitt romney congressman paul ryan said that lunch at the white house was his first ever lunch with the president. >> i'm excited we had this lunch. we come from different perspectives so we exchanged very frank views but they were different and at least we had this conversation. and president obama attended the annual gridiron lunch. our cameras are never allowed inside, but we do know what he said including a joke about washington gridlock. he said, quote, as you know, i last attended the gridiron dinner two years ago. back then i addressed a number of topics, a dysfunctional congress a looming budget crisis, complaints that i don't spend enough time with the president press. it's funny, it seems like it was just yet. >> snl may have been the best of them all over the weekend.

let's show you what we're dealing with as we walk out the door on monday. thankfully we don't have any big storms like we had to deal with last week. we did melt a lot of that snow. not all of it. we have more melting the next two days here. the rain this morning, umbrella day definitely from the deep south all the way through the ohio valley. that will move through the east coast the next two days. the snowstorm is just about over with. let's track the rain. baton rouge, birmingham, huntsville, nashville we're getting a soaking rain, louisville, lexington, cincinnati to columbus. detroit, looks like it's exiting your region. chicago, you look better. the only areas really left with some snow is from omaha to des moines. careful driving out here. as you head up 35 towards mason city, a little leftover snow. it's very cold on the back side of this. look at the wind chill in fargo.

welcome back. stories making news this morning, a family member of seven people killed in a kentucky house fire says he attempted a rescue but was too late. two adults and five children under the age of three were killed when their house went up in flames. the cause is still being investigated. in india, the main suspect in the gang rape of a woman in new delhi committed suicide in his jail cell.

ram singh was accused of driving a bus where a girl was raped by six men last year. a grim milestone in japan today as the country marks two years since the devastating earthquake and tsunami. memorial services are being held in tokyo and towns along the northeastern coast where the pacific ocean rushed ashore. nearly 19,000 people were killed in that disaster. and new york congressman peter king knows all about bare knuckle battles in congress. on saturday night the republican moved from the political arena into the booking ring fighting in a two-round exhibition bout against a kick boxing champion. the friendly sparring match ended in a draw. the dow is up 10% to 14,397. the s&p was up 8.76% and the

turning now back to our topo lit call stories. joining me on the phone, lynn sweet, washington bureau chief for the washington times. good morning, thanks for being with us. >> good morning to you. >> this week we know obama is heading to the capitol for three more bipartisan meetings. we heard about what seems like progress. does all of this signal some kind of shift in the bipartisan gridlock we've been seeing? >> yes, it's a shift, but it doesn't lead to passing new legislation one way or the other. it is activity. we'll see if it has purpose. >> we're almost two weeks into the sequester. when it comes into public perception, who are the winners and losers in this? >> i still think looking at

polling the public, both sides. congress is taking a bit of a harder hit at this point. >> why do you think that is? >> well, i think because congress is still seen as the body that is supposed to pass something with a president to sign it. i think sometimes the full partnership aspect of it isn't always as clear and also obama went into the sequester with this much higher popularity rating than congress. >> you just wrote a column about the gridiron dinner this weekend. who were the winners and losers there? >> well, the big winner is louisiana governor bobby gindel. senator amy kobichar. bobby had some cleanup work to do. he gave a very canned 2009 state of the union response. he used a lot of heavy self-deprecating humor at the saturday night dinner and he

just was able to i think in a sense take a turn around shot. they were aimed at himself. >> lynn sweet, with the chicago sun times. here's some other news going on around america. in california, dramatic video captures the rescue of a sailboat crew after their vessel broke apart during a race. it drifted into a rocky shoreline and issued a may-day call before they swam to shore. one crew member died but remaining five were lifted to safety. a bizarre story out of oklahoma where a 22-year-old mother was arrested for trying to sell her two children on facebook. missy van horn offered up her 2-year-old and 10 month old for $4,000. she was trying to raise money to bail her boyfriend out of jail.

turning now to sports. college basketball thriller decides the big ten title. code ji zeller of number two indiana made a go-ahead lay-up for a 72-71 win over number 7 michigan. it was the hoosier's first outride big ten title in ten years. michigan state got 16 points from keith apling including a mega dunk with less than 10 minutes left in the game. the indiana spart tans kept them from sharing the title. in the nba, new orleans trailing in the closing seconds as ryan makes the clutch basket and the hornets edged the glasers, 98-96. team u.s.a. breaks open a do or die game. that scored three runs and the americans beat canada 9-4 to advance to the second round. former red sox and dodgers slugger manny ramirez will play

baseball this year, in taiwan. he hopes to do well enough for a last shot in the majors. looks like he's fine tuning his stroke just in time for the masters. tiger woods victory at the world golf classic is the second win in a year. woods saj some tough puts with a total of 27 for the tournament. only one fewer than his all time best. now for another look at the weather, bill is back. good morning again. >> a dream of golf in the northeast. still getting rid of some snow. a lot of it did melt. we're going to melt more today. temperatures are above freezing everywhere. you don't have to worry about the black ice. today is going to be a nice day where we have a deep snow pack. we'll be oeblg in the 40s. it should be in the 50s today. could be as warm as 60 in philly and in d.c., late day rain for pittsburgh and buffalo. all of that rain will come through the northeast as we go through tuesday. we could have a significant period of heavy rain.
