two marines before taking his own life. the suspect is a marine staff member on the base. the base was temporarily put on a lockdown until oiffficers cleared the area. overseas, president obama's wrapping up his visit to israel this morning. we're heading to neighboring jordan. today the president toured several important spots for the jewish people including the tomb of yitzhak rabin and a holocaust memorial and museum. it follows a visit to the west bank yesterday and a speech in jerusalem where he offered america's own fledging support for israel while calling for a renewed start to the middle east peace process. >> those who adhere to the ideology of rejecting israel's right to exist, they might as well reject the earth beneath them or the sky above because israel's not going anywhere. [ applause ] so long as there is a united states of america

jewish extremist for his attempts to negotiate peace between the israelis and palestinians. he will be on his way to bethlehem where he'll be greeted with palestinian authority president mahmoud abbas where he'll take a tour of the church of nativity before lefrg israel to head to jordan to have talks there with king abdullah. this was a somewhat successful trip according to some white house officials for president obama. they feel that president obama has encouraged the israeli public to believe that president obama is actually on their side and that there is an unbreakable alliance as the israelis put it between america and israel. that being said, the skeptics still remain on both sides as israelis as well as palestinians. many feel that president obama's visit was symbolic. it may not negotiate any peace when it comes to the region. although there is still some hope at least that president obama and the obama administration will get involved and actually help in negotiating

a two-state solution. >> we brought you the president's unscripted remarks at the top of the show. how is that being received in the israeli press about the children of the palestinians? >> reporter: many israelis, it depends on who you talk to, really. the israelis, they, too, are very divided when it comes to the palestinian issue. many israelis agreed with president obama and they do feel that there should be a two-state solution. that that would be in the best interest of israel itself to have a nation side by side with the palestinian state, two states that can actually get along. there have been some skeptics as well, people who believe that there may not be a way to negotiate peace because the animosity between the two sides have grown as the decades have gone by. >> nbc's atia abowi, thank you. the prospect of peace is no less he lucive in syria where the civil war there is only intensifying. a devastating bomb blast tore through a mosque in the capital

yesterday killing at least 42 people. among them, one of the country's top clerics. the leading opposition group is denying responsibility for the attack. the united nations is opening its own investigation to claims that chemical weapons have been used in the fighting. president obama says if the allegations prove true, it will be game changer. carl levin and john mccain are calling on the white house to take more active steps to force syria's president from power. the leaders of the arms service committee suggest using precision air strikes to target the military's aircraft without putting american troops on the ground. harry reid made it clear that the senate's gun control bill will include provisions that would expand background checks to private gun sales. reid plans to bring the bill to the floor next month. he said he is hopeful that a bipartisan compromise can be reached on background checks. reid also called for amendments on banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines after those measures were left out of the final bill.

the proposals in the senate may not be enough for joe biden. in an appearance with michael bloomberg yesterday, he invoked the memories of the newtown shooting and implored lawmakers to ban assault weapons. >> for all those who say we shouldn't and can't ban assault weapons, for all those who say the politics is too hard, how can they say that? when you take a look at those 20 beautiful babies and what happened to them and those six teachers and administrators. tell me how it violates anyone's constitutional right to be limited to a clip that holds ten rounds instead of 30? >> you have seen this? joining the calls for stricter gun calls is yoko ono. she tweeted out this picture of the bloody glasses lennon was actually wearing when he was shot along with the statistic

that over a million people have been killed by guns in the u.s. since lennon's murder more than 32 years ago. this morning a bill is on the way to the president's desk to keep the government funded through september. a looming shutdown set for next week. the plan passed 318-109 in the house. a budget deal can be the long way off. as both parties hash out spending cuts. paul ryan's plan which made major slashes to entitlement programs in an effort to balance the budget within a decade passed the house. but as expected, died in the senate. one of the key parts of the ryan budget includes the repeal of the president's health care law. tomorrow marks three years since the legislation was signed into law. according to michelle bachmann, failing to do away with it will have dead lly consequences. >> the american people, especially vulnerable women, vulnerable children, vulnerable

includes saving the nation's second largest bank from default. banks have been closed now since march 16th. and last night protesters clashed with police outside of parliament after atm withdrawals were limited to 260 euros or $3335. people can't get their money. for more on the situation in cyprus, let's go to karen tso who is live in london much hard to believe. imagine if that was to happen in england or anywhere else in europe. people couldn't get their money. ridiculous. >> it's just extraordinary, isn't it? we had a dramatic change of events this morning. the cyprus finance minister flew to moscow to try to avoid paying this tax on deposit holders and this is a solution that the europeans came up with. so the finance minister rejected the fly to moscow to come up with a plan b. he left moscow empty handed and flown back to cyprus now. all he managed to secure is an extension on the maturity of an existing loan saying no fresh
