this monday, april 8th. another hot topic, immigration. as senator lindsey graham says a compromise on that issue could lead us to the grand bargain on entitlement reform and tracking two stories. ron mott is in afghanistan where a suicide bomber killed five americans over the weekend and we're in cairo tracking new developments there leading many to ask, where were the authorities? president obama will be in connecticut this afternoon to continue his push for new gun legislation. today's event will take place an hour's drive from the sandy hook elementary school where 20 children, 6 adults were gunned down back in december. in washington, congress is set to take up gun reform this week. an issue met with the threat of a filibuster from ray number of senate republicans. senator john mccain not among them. >> what is your thought on a filibuster on this? >> i don't understand it. the purpose of the united states senate is to debate and to vote
2:31 am
and to let the people know where we stand. >> so you'd encourage republicans not to filibuster. >> i will not only encourage it, i do not understand it. what are we afraid of? >> dan malloy is lashing out at the nra's president wayne lapierre who criticized the state's measures. >> wayne reminds me of the clowns at the circus. they get the most attention. that's what he's paid to do but the reality the gun used to kill 26 people on december 14th was legally purchased in the state of connecticut even though we had an assault weapons ban. but, you know, there were loopholes in it that you could drive a truck through. he is so out of whack, it is unbelievable. i can't get on a plane as the governor of the state of connecticut without somebody running a background check on me. why should you be able to buy a gun or armor piercing munitions?
2:32 am
doesn't make sense. >> joining the president today will be family members of those killed in the newtown massacre. several spoke on "60 minutes" about the morning that changed their lives forever and what they want congress to do to keep it from happening again. >> i ran into the firehouse and frantically was just looking around and all the kids in her class, i ran in the room and popped up and held him and yelling daddy, there were so many gunshots and i saw this and i saw that so i just took my son in my arms. i took him like he was 2 years old again and held him on my shoulder and was running room to room trying to locate his class. >> and then i got a text from jimmy, i have isiah, but i don't have -- and i kept texting jimmy every 10, 15 seconds, anna. question mark. and then anna, exclamation point
2:33 am
because we had isiah. i didn't understand why we didn't have anna. >> you can have a million bullets but if you have to put them one at a time the ability to do real damage is significantly reduced. >> we know that he left the smaller capacity magazines at home. that was a choice the shooter made. he knew that the larger capacity magazine clips were more lethal. >> the more bullets you can get out the end of that gun in the least amount of time is the single area that i believe affects lethality and it's a direct contributor to that factor. >> we may be seeing some more signs of progress on the immigration debate this morning. yesterday on "meet the press" david gregory asked lindsey graham how the issue can play into a larger compromise. >> you think the grand bargain is possible by july? >> i think if you do immigration and the grand bargain this year

will dominate the 21st century. the key is can we solve immigration. the politics of self-deportation are behind us. mitt romney ran a good campaign but it was an impractical solution and quite frankly, it was offensivoffensive. every corner of the party, rank and file party members are now understanding there has to be an earned pathway to citizenship that gives us leverage with our democratic counterparts. >> he even proposed revenues if they are tied to cuts in entitlement spending. a top u.s. general acknowledges the fight against the taliban is long from over. saying the insurgency will remain a threat in some parts of afghanistan well after the u.s. wraps up combat in the country at the end of this year. those remarks come just hours after the taliban claimed responsibility for a suicide

bombing that killed five americans including 25-year-old diplomat anne smedinghoff killed while delivering textbooks to children at a local school. secretary of state john kerry spoke about the bombing and the young diplomat he had met. >> a brave american was determined to brighten the light of learning through books written in the native tongue of the students that she had never met but whom she felt compelled to help and she was met by cowardly terrorist determined to bring darkness and death to total strangers. >> smedinghoff is the first diplomat to die while on the job since the attacks on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. also this weekend a nato air strike killed more than a dozen people in eastern afghanistan reportedly. at least ten children and five women were killed in the attack. it targeted a high-profile taliban commando.
2:36 am
what is the reaction to this tragedy, ron? >> reporter: hey there, bill. good morning to you. sadly the violence dins in afghanistan. as you mentioned, america lost six people on saturday but the deadliest day here for americans since last summer and anne smedinghoff, among those who was killed on saturday, as you mentioned she was on the way to deliver books to schoolchildren and a convoy of american coalition officials when they were hit by a suicide bomber, five americans killed in that attack. as you mentioned ten young people, ten children, afghan civilians killed yesterday in an attack in kunar province and another, a roadside bomb hit a public bus killing nine afghans and injuring about 22 people so the violence is starting to spread as we are beginning, we believe, to start the spring and summer fighting season here, so the concern is whether the afghan officials can contain this violence. now, you know general dempsey, the head of the joint chiefs of staff was here over the weekend,

2:38 am
nbc's eamon mohyeldin is live. where are we at right now? >> reporter: let's start off with what began on friday and the small town outside of cairo there was a religious squirmish that quickly escalated into a gun fight in which four christians were killed. on sunday christian worshipers came to pay their respects and mourn the death of those in a large funeral procession at the main cathedral that turned violence. according to sources and eyewitnesses as that was wrapping up, the crowd of christian mourners came under attack by those throwing stones, molotov cocktails and they then in return opened fire on the crowds. the police came but the question on everyone's mind including lawmakers as well as the political opposition is why did the ministry of interior and police force not secure sunday's funeral procession when they
2:39 am
knew it could be another flash point. the president said he launched an investigation and telephoned the pope, the patriarch and said all results would be made publicly but undermines the growing tension and eyes of the christian community and say that under an islamist government there is more pressure, more discrimination, more restrictions placed on them as a community in the events of yesterday, they say, highlights those tensions, bill? >> ayman, i'm with you. i don't understand how a mob fight can fight for hours. ayman mu ayman, thank you. they warned of another nuclear test only to back off those claims later. a missile test could come at any time from the north. last week north korean leaders told british and russian embassies they could not

guarantee their safety after wednesday. setting off concerns a missile launch may be eminent. meanwhile, even china appeared to distance itself from pyongyang as they said no one should be allowed to throw the whole world into chaos for selfish gains. at home the pentagon canceled the test launch of a long-range missile in california and john mccain says the threat of an accidental war is serious and that china holds the cards in dealing with kim jong-un. >> we've seen the cycle over and over and over again, for the last 20 or 30 years. they confront, there's crisis then we offer them incentives, food, money, while meanwhile, the most repressive and oppressive regime on earth continues to function. china does hold the key to this problem. china can cut off their economy if they want to. >> secretary of state john kerry visits seoul later this week. the kocongregation is mourng
