2:31 am
crime. he stared at the floor, said nothing as prosecutors explained how he imprisoned three women and a child for nearly a decade in terrifying and brutal conditions. >> the situation has turned, your honor. he stands before you a captive. >> reporter: the formal charges, three counts of rape. the victims, amanda berry, gina dejesus and michelle knight. and four counts of kidnapping, the three women and berry's daughter born and held in captivity. the judge set bail at $8 million. today in cleveland castro's mother reacted. >> translator: i ask that those mothers forgive me and the girls forgive me for all the pain they suffered. >> reporter: wkyc reported police told him that castro confessed to the kidnappings. >> he told police he's cold-blooded, a sex addict and can't control himself.
2:32 am
they were crimes of opportunity. he's blaming this all on the girls. if the girls didn't get in the car with them, none of this would have happened. >> reporter: we're learning more about what it was like inside the house where the women were found. ricky sanchez says he's been there many times before. >> the front door, there was five or six locks. when you walk inside a house, it's a mess. >> reporter: though michelle knight remains in the hospital, two of the women are with family and friends. behind closed doors, decorated with banners, balloons and gifts. >> you can tell there was a lot of suffering. it's going to be a long process. she's going to be okay. just trying to get her to move on with her life and start thinking about happy times. >> certainly hope so. that was ron allen reporting. now to the latest in the boston marathon bombings where officials are ateming to piece together how the tsarnaev brothers were able to pull off the attack.
2:33 am
the senate held a hearing on the bombing putting a sample on what u.s. intelligence knew about the suspects and how much of that information was shared with boston law enforcement. >> before the bombing were you aware of the warning regarding tamerlan and the fact he may travel overseas to meet with extremists? >> one of my detectives is in the squad that investigated that. we have access to all the data bases, but we were not, in fact, informed of that particular development. >> it's fair to say that your police officers assigned to the joint terrorism task force did not know this information. >> that's correct. >> would you have liked to have known that information? >> in hindsight, certainly. >> if you had had this information before the bombing, would you have done -- your police force and you, would you
2:34 am
have done anything differently? >> i can't say i would have come to a different conclusion. >> joe lieberman took the stand saying he believes better communication between law enforcement officials could have prevented the april 15th bombing. >> why didn't they involve the local law enforcement who could have stayed on this case and picked up signals from some of the students who interacted with them, from the people in the mosque who threw out tamerlan because he was such an extremist, or seen the videos he posted when he came back from dagestan that could have prevented all this from happening? >> the "new york times" reports two acquaintances of tamerlan tsarnaev say the elder bombing suspect showed an interest in jooe hazard during his six-month six to russia last year. after being turned away by several cemeteries, his body was

finally buried at an undies closed location yesterday. in an interview by ann curry, the prime minister said given the syrian government's attacks it's time for the u.s. to get involved. >> it's clear that regime has used chemical weapons and missiles and used about 200 missiles, according to our intelligence. it could be even more, but not less. there are patients brought to our hospitals wounded by these missiles. >> has president assad crossed president obama's red line? >> translator: a long time ago. it's ban long time ago.
2:36 am
>> the prime minister did not provide nbc news with hard evidence of chemical attack, but he will share whatever information he has with president obama when they meet next week. also against the democrat who may stand the best chance of succeeding him in the white house. lawmakers are now ruling out the possibility of issuing a subpoena to former secretary of state hillary clinton require ing her to come back to kwhil for another round of testimony. at least five house committees are looking into the september 11th attack in libya that killed four americans. speaker john boehner is under pressure from his own party to step up the investigation. yesterday he calls for the release of an e-mail from the state department from the day after the attack that he says will prove the administration suspected islamic extremist from the start. >> understand the reason this is still underway is because the white house has done everything possible to block access to the information that would outline the truth.
2:37 am
and the question you have to ask is, why? somebody clearly decided they didn't like the references to islamic terrorism and made changes in this document. the american people deserve the truth. and they will get the truth. >> we're also getting a look at how benghazi could have played an even more prominent role in last year's presidential election. here's an ad from the rnc that was never aired. >> your children are safe and asleep. but there's a phone in the white house and it's ringing. something is happening in the world. [ busy signal ] >> the ad was reportedly scr scrapped because the romney campaign feared it it would distract voters from the economy. a lot more information on that coming up on "morning joe requests. the push for immigration reform is getting a bipartisan boost as it begins the long road through congress. they accepted several amendments to the so-called gang of eights plan to reform the system. still there are hundreds more to consider, a process that could take weeks. senator chuck schumer says the immigration issue could reset the tone in d.c. >> if you don't agree with everything, no one does. be constructive, we're open to changes. but don't make an effort to kill a bill that is the best hope for immigration reform, i believe, that we have had in this country and frankly, the best hope to help break the partisan gridlock

that has strangled the senate, the congress and the country. prince harry kicked off an eight-day u.s. tour yesterday. much to our disappointment, he promised no se nan begans this time. his arrival in washington brought congress to a standstill as dozens of female aids flocked to get a glimpse of his royal. before meeting with michelle obama at a white house event for military mothers. he will visit arlington national cemetery. his visit is meant to promote the rehabilitation of wounded troops. let us know why you're awake. also if you have good ideas how to treat mom, shoot us an e-mail or tweet me. we'll read the best responses a little later in the show.
