room floor. but now we're going to show you some fascinating never-before-seen footage from a series produced by nbc news that followed undercover operations conducted by the las vegas police department delving deeper into these raw tapes reveals striking details about the people caught in the police stings and gives you incredible access into a criminal world. all undercover sting operations are dangerous because you can't control everything. you try to control as much as you can. it's dangerous. we can't show the faces of the undercover cops who have given us this access. not only could it compromise f future operations, it could endanger their lives. what do we know about our guests tonight? >> we know his first and last name, a three time ex-felon. how we found out he is, he gave us his phone number. this is so and so, a gay and a girl's name plus their last name.

so we ran them and this was him. >> they knew this was a felon. they didn't know if if he had a propensity for violence. they didn't know if he was going be strung out on drugs or carrying a weapon. there's a lot we don't know. >> coming in with a nissan quest. >> is that a minivan? >> it's one of the top of the line ones. we will see. he's coming in to fence it. what's the going rate? >> our going rate is $200 on $10,000. that is what we have been telling ought crooks. we got all the booklets on the desk. they pull it open and look for the year and make of their car. it says $17,000, $18,000, and we go $200 on that. >> you walk into the store front through a regular door like you would see anywhere. there are shades over the window and there is a counter.

the undercover cops are on one side. the bad guys on the other. there is a small room where we basically have a control room set up where we can monitor all the hidden cameras. and we record everything that goes on. >> that's all right right there. see, going to park right in front. stay right there. stay right there. okay. it's okay. we already checked it out. let's get in the room. >> i'm in the back room, the control room if you will, with a sergeant who is overseeing part of this investigation. when they know that a crook is about to walk in it's all business. everybody has got a job to do. there is a briefing before. every visitor. and it's very serious. >> i don't know much about rides. let me get johnny. johnny, are you here? >> stand by. we have a beauty, literally.

me out. i didn't know if you sold me a car that belonged to a judge. >> if it's possible for the story to get any more outrageous, adam reveals to the cops that he is currently awaiting sentencing on previous charges and it's not just any judge. >> he is my sentencing judge right now. >> your sentencing judge owns the car you stole almost a year ago? >> yeah. >> finally back to the task at hand, adam gets back to the deal at happened, selling the stolen car and gps unit. >> $550 for the ride, the gps. appreciate it. nice meeting you, brother. >>. >> they want 0 to gather as much evidence as possible. they let many of these people walk to continue these crimes

than a year. when the cops close up shop, they round up all the criminals they caught and that's when i confront them including adam isaacson. chris hansen with "dateline" nbc. how you doing? we're doing a story on this investigation. we were able to talk to some of the people arrested in the sting. both as they were being brought this in, but also later, actually in the local jail. adam is actually interviewed at the police station after his arrest. so he is in an interrogation room and he is under arrest. can you tell me how you got mixed up in the middle of all of this? >> bad choices. >> bad choices? how old are you, adam? >> 22. >> in this store front you go on for a long time and talk to

these undercover cops -- >> i what? >> you go on for a long time and talk to the undercover cops about how many cars you have stolen. how easy it is. you can take fords if you have an old car antenna. >> just to make them buy the one that i had. >> what kind of car was it that you sold to them? >> somebody called me up and said that they needed to get rid of a nissan van. >> and so you drove it over there? >> i didn't get in the car until a half a block away. >> you met whoever stole the car, right? got in, drove it over there just to do the deal? >> yeah. >> now you said in that conversation and i was actually in the back room listening and watching because we had our hidden cameras in there. >> i recorded it on my cell phone as well. >> you recorded it as well? >> i believe so. >> you said you stole quite a few cars? >> right.

to the daughter of a judge. >> i guess so. i didn't know until months la r later. >> did you know the gal, the daughter of the judge? had >> never met her before a day in my life. >> but you know the judge. >> apparently my new sentencing judge. >> how do you suppose this is going play in front of your new sentencing judge, talking about having possession of her daughter's car. >> she's going [ bleep ] fry me. >> that's not going go over very well, i'm thinking. >> no, it's not. >> this is where our int interview takes a turn i never saw coming. so what's your plan? >> honestly, i'm 22 years old and you're going show this on tv. i will probably go to prison and get stabbed and killed. if you want to know the truth, that's what is going happen. it's going get me killed. period. point blank. end of story. i will die in prison.

i will be murdered. >> why? >> because you guys are going put this [ bleep ]. on tape and everything else. it doesn't matter. >> why would somebody come after you the? >> people don't come after you. anybody thinks you told, you die. period, end of story. >> adam seems to be worried that for some reason he is going be thought of as a snitch. we had no indication that he was a snitch. no information that he snitched on anyone. so my gut is that he was just trying to figure out a way to keep that interview off of national television. so you are saying it's not so much you would be on television but the suggestion that you are trying to rat out people in front of police. >> the fact that i have stolen cars and i am sitting here talking to you right now. that's what will kill me. i will die because of it. >> what should happen? >> i don't know. >> you tell me. >> what i want to happen? >> what do you want to happen?

the storefront operated for the better part of a year. 100 crimes. very successful. it was very important in this investigation that the undercover cops had credibility. i have looked into the eyes of a lot of criminals and i can tell you when they are suspicious or whether they are comfortable and these undercover cops really did a masterful job of making these folks comfortable. of having conversations that would not raise suspicion. these guys are out there without a net. how dangerous is this? >> it's very dangerous as a uc. >> uc stands for undercover.

>> some background but you don't know exactly who you are dealing with in some cases here? >> most of the time you don't. we have id'd them through fingerprints or names. at least 95% of them are multiple convictions. they're all bad characters. >> could be carrying weapons? >> absolutely. >> courtney. >> nice to finally meet you. >> so courtney comes in with levi and if you were to see her walking down the street you wouldn't say there is a car thief. or somebody who would be dealing in stolen property. she almost has a happy-go-lucky attitude. >> is this your truck? >> no. >> oh. >> this is your truck? >> no. it was some guy that told me i was too young for him.

we were messing around with each other and he stopped talking to me altogether. >> okay. >> and so -- >> i'm sorry. i love these stories. these are great. so this is some guy's truck, an ex-boyfriend, so to speak, and you said, screw you, i'm taking your truck? >> no. i had my homeboy do it. >> we pretty much just packed up his house and just loaded it up. >> courtney opens right up. she is very willing to give the undercover cops a lot of detail. her boyfriend, she says, dumped her saying she was too young. i guess he didn't do it very ceremoniously. very little follow-up. and that's what she used to justify stealing his truck. >> two pieces of 40 and a deuce deuce. >> when she talks about guns, that really gets the attention of the undercover cops.

seemingly won over the undercover cops, they get down to negotiating the sale of the pickup truck. >> okay. so i was thinking $25,000 this s-30. it is a year old now. how many miles on it? >> 15,000. >> 15,000? >> mm-hmm. >> i don't know. will you come back with the other stuff? >> oh, of course. >> i will -- how about, i was going say $500. i will throw in $520 because of the cab and i will pay for the cab back? or $480 and you can find your own cab. what are you looking for? is somebody going talk to you from up there? >> it's going come to me. can't we just make it $550 and call it a day. >> i don't have a $50 bill. do you have change? >> do you smoke? >> yes. >> a couple of these.

>> yeah. you have me sold. >> courtney doesn't necessarily seem dangerous, but she is angry it at this ex-boyfriend. i wondered when i saw the video tape for the first time if maybe she wasn't a little high, just the way she was touching her face and moving her hair around. she certainly didn't seem to grasp the gravity of the situation that she was committing a felony that could put her in prison. she was acting like it was a trip to the dry cleaners or something. coming up, six months later i meet up with courtney in jail. have you ever been in trouble with the law before? >> uh-huh. >> for what? >> which state? nevada or colorado? >> and courtney shares startling personal details. >> how long were you on meth? when "vegas undercover raw" continues.

good morning, everybody. i'm betty nguyen. here is what's happening. all is well at the international space station after astronauts made a rare space walk on saturday. they replaced a pump in homes of stopping an ammonia leak. so far it appears the mission was successful. doctors in bangladesh say the seamstress who survived 17 days in a collapsed garment factory is in good condition. the 19-year-old was dehydrated and suffering from insomnia. aside from some scratches, she suffered no major injuries. now back to "vegas undercover." welcome back to "vegas underkofrp raw." you're getting a behind-the-scenes look at how a police sting works and what happens to the people caught in it. it's an all access pass to a dangerous underworld where you can understand how the criminal mine works.

there is perhaps no interview i did where this was more evident then when i sat down in jail with courtney, a woman who was willing to share so many personal details. hey, courtney. chris hansen, "dateline" nbc. how are you? >> good. i'm not -- >> not ready for this? we are doing a story on a investigation conducted by las vegas police department. and you surfaced in that investigation so we wanted to get your side of things. how did you get caught in the middle of all of this? >> i honestly do not know. i had a friend that had a friend that knew some people that were dealing with cars and things and he took me to them and now i'm here. >> you had a friend who had a friend who knew some people. that sounds like the start of a bad story. >> it's a very it -- it does not

have a happy ending. >> it was startling to me the difference in her appearance in the store front she looked attractive. vivacious almost. in prison half of her hair was braided and she looked tough. she looked like she was just trying to survive. what do you say about the charges? >> i didn't do them? >> you didn't do them? >> huh-uh. >> how old are you? >> 21. >> you go college? >> mm-hmm. >> what are you studying? >> criminal justice. >> criminal justice? isn't that ironic? >> exactly. very ironic. >> she must have been absent the day the professor talked about how to deal with law enforcement. >> i told them if they wanted me to turn myself in to pretty much go [ bleep ] themselves because i wasn't going to turn myself in. i said catch me if you can. you said catch me if you can?

>> those were my exact words. >> courtney, you have to know that if you say that to police detectives, they're going to get you. >> they didn't get me right away, though. it took them three days. >> you sound proud of that. >> i'm not proud of that. they were not going tell me what i was being charged with. i'm not going to turn myself in without a heads-up. >> they had an arrest warrant for you. >> an arrest warrant for what? they didn't tell me why. i wasn't going to turn myself in. unless i knew why i was being arrested. >> have you ever been in trouble with the law before? >> uh-huh. >> for what? >> which state, nevada or colora colorado? >> let's start with colorado. >> colorado were drug charges. they raided my house for manufacturing and distributing. >> of what? >> crystal meth. >> crystal meth? >> mm-hmm. >> were you using or selling? >> just smoking.

>> smoking. that is a tough, tough drug. both in how addictive it is and in what it does to your mind and body. >> mm-hmm. >> how long were you on meth? >> i have been on it since i was 11 years old. >> since you were 11 years old? are you still on it? >> no. >> how long have you been off? >> since i have been in jail. for the last 12 days. >> is that what led you into this mess is drug use? >> mm-hmm. >> you are only 21 years old. >> i know. it's sad. >> what did it feel like to smoke it? >> awesome. the first hit when you blow it out it is just awesome. i don't know. it's just great. >> but it doesn't lead anywhere good. >> no it doesn't. not at all. >> all right. so in this case, the police

charge that you were involved in the theft of a pick-up truck and some other items from an ex-boyfriend and some of your pals helped you do it. and that you all got wind of this fencing operation and you brought the stuff there or some of it there and sold it. is that what happened? >> only the truck. >> only the truck. tell me how you got your hands on this truck. >> um, my friend told me that he had pulled a lick at the house. >> he had pulled a lick? meaning? >> meaning he had robbed the house. >> and whose house was this? >> an ex-friend -- i would say a boyfriend. >> and how come you broke up? >> he told me i was too young. >> you were too young? >> uh-huh. >> and how did you feel about that? >> it killed me inside.

like i wasn't doing any drugs when i had met him. i had just got back from colorado and that's -- it broke me. i just wanted him to be me my friend. he said he would be my friend and he would talk to me and he didn't. he wouldn't call me. i would text message him. and he wouldn't message me back. it hurt and i don't like being lied to. if you tell me you are going to be my friend and you tell me i am too young and you are 28 years old. no, no, no, no, no. just because i'm 21 and you're 28 and you go and party with my friends and you don't want to party with me, don't tell me you will talk to me and not talk to me. >> were you bitter towards him? >> no. not at all. >> did you want to get back at him? >> huh-uh. >> did you steal his pick-up truck? >> no. >> who did? >> a friend. >> a friend. so you get out of school that day and you go to your friend's house and there is [ bleep ] truck. >> uh-huh.

>> i didn't even know whose truck at first. >> and you say to your friends what? >> i say what the hell are you guys doing? they're like, he shouldn't have done you like that. >> so if you had to boil it down, what was it that got you into this mess? >> drugs. after he broke up with me, that's when i started going back to crystal meth because it hurt so i started hanging out with the old crowd that i used to hang out with years ago and i started smoking and i started doing more and more dirt. >> dirt meaning drugs? dirt doing drugs and crime. >> what other crimes? >> numerous. numerous. >> give me an example. >> more car theft. more -- >> so you stole cars. >> didn't steal them. i was with people who did do it. >> you helped? >> i was an accomplice. >> did you get caught for any of those crimes?

mom. that's what i should have done. i should have just listened to my mom. >> what did she tell you? >> why do you hang out with criminals? if you don't hang out with criminals you won't go jail. >> what do you do now? >> pray. >> what do you want people to know most about your situation? in this case? >> i didn't rob the house. yes, i had the stolen vehicle because i was high and i needed to make another quick buck so i could go buy my sack. >> your sack, your crystal meth? were you high on that video? >> mm-hmm. i was really high. >> if you had to give a piece of advice to everybody out there who is 18 to 21 years old what would you say? >> don't do drugs. don't do them. it's not worth it. it will lead you to nowhere. regardless if you are getting high, regardless if you're getting high to go make a quick

>> well, you have sympathy for anyone who is in a touch spot. clearly allison was not some one-woman crime wave. but when you take a look at the victim and you realize the hassle that that person has gone through, having had a vehicle stolen, you know, you tend to feel a little less sorry. allison pleads guilty to attempted burglary and possession of a stolen vehicle and is sentenced to probation. while reporting on this investigation, i was able to look into the eyes of some pretty seasoned criminals. one thing that struck me was the difference i saw between the hidden camera footage we have been able to show you where you can see most of them acting tough and hardened and the way the same criminals acted when i spoke to them in person. they were more open and vulnerable giving you a gripping look into the mind of a criminal. that's all for this edition of "vegas undercover raw."
