had a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. jolie writes this was a preventive measure, since she carries a gene increasing her risk of developing breast cancer to 87%. jolie writes, i chose not to keep my story private because there's many women who don't know they may be living under the shadow of cancer. it's my hope they can get gene-tested. and if they have a high risk, they, too, know they have strong options. she also writes, on a personal note, i don't feel any less of a woman. i feel empowered that makes a strong choice that in no way diminishes femininity. jolie's mom died of ovarian cancer at the age of 56. something jolie spoke about with ann curry on the "today" show that year. >> i lost my mom. but it happened. and i'm happy she's out of pain. >> jolie says her partner, actor brad pitt, was by her side

during the entire three-month process. the couple has six children together. the justice department is on defense this morning after news came out that it secretly obtained phone records of journalists working for the associated press. government officials seized two months of records from 20 separate lines used by the news agency. a senior justice official said it was a necessary part of an investigation into the leaking of information related to a yemeni-based terrorist plot. we regard this action by the department of justice as a serious interference with a.p.'s constitutional rights to gather and report the news. a u.s. attorney spokesman responded saying, quote, we take seriously our obligations to follow all applicable laws, federal regulations and department of justice policies when issuing subpoenas of phone records. the white house is distancing itself, saying it had no

knowledge of the actions. those investigations are handled independently by the justice department. now, to the other controversy in washington. the irs and its targeting of conservative nonprofit groups. monday, president obama echoed outrage from congressional republicans, calling the agency's actions an abuse of power. and now, house lawmakers have scheduled hears over the issue for later this week. tracie potts joins us live from washington with more. >> reporter: good morning. timing is critical here. this happened leading up to the 2012 election, which is why some of the groups insist it was politically-motivated. a draft report from the inspector general for tax administration says low-level irs employees in cincinnati singled out some 300 conservative groups, identifying themselves as patriots or tea party.

>> politically motivated. plain and simple. >> this is not republican. it's not democrat. it's wrong to do. >> reporter: the president agreed. >> i've got no patience with it. i will not tolerate it. and we'll make sure that we find out exactly what happened on this. >> i don't frankly trust the administration to do its own investigation. to have legitimacy, congress needs to conduct its own investigation. >> reporter: tea party leaders want an independent prosecutor. >> we want it to be something that's nonpartisan. we want to make sure that republicans are kept honest, too. >> reporter: the draft report shows the top lawyer at the irs was briefed on the investigation two years ago. the white house insists it first learned late last month. congress got a closed briefing monday. >> heads really should roll. this is very serious. >> reporter: the acting irs commissioner and the inspector general writing the report testified at a house hearing

friday. florida senator marco rubio says that acting irs commissioner should resign. he has introduced a bill saying any irs employee who willfully violates the rights of taxpayers should be fired. >> thanks so much. the search is on in new orleans for the gunman police say shot into a crowded mother's day parade, injuring 19 people. officials say they know more about 19-year-old aiken scott. police searched three homes on monday. but they came up short. these surveillance images, along with a $10,000 reward led to several community tips. but it's too early to know if scott acted alone. witnesses say they saw three people running from the scene. three victims remained in critical condition monday. but authorities say their injuries are not life-threatening. a philadelphia doctor convicted of murdering three babies during late-term abortions could face the death penalty. one female juror cried as the foreman red the verdict monday

that found the 72-year-old guilty of a slew of other charges, ranging from involuntary manslaughter to conspiracy. he was acquitted in the death of a fourth baby. he was accused of delivering live babies and then killing them. the jury deliberated for ten days after five weeks of testimony. and now, here's your "first look" at this morning's look at scrambled politics. some republicans say the benghazi scandal will cause president obama's downfall. but a new poll reveals how little americans know about the incident. a survey from public policy polling shows 41% of republicans consider it to be the biggest political scandal in american history. that's compared to 10% of democrats and 20% of independents. of those republicans, 39% don't know where benghazi is. 10% in egypt. 9% in iran. for the record, it's libya. president obama will be seeing

double in his cabinet meetings. john kerry's younger brother will become the acting commerce secretary. he serves as the department's general counsel. caroline kennedy will be in a new york courtroom today after being selected as a juror for a felony drug trial. while answering her jury questionnaire, she declined to answer if any of her family had been a victim of a crime. and said she knew a few people with a drug problem. vermont lawmakers have passed legislation permitting doctor-assisted suicide. it has strong support from a governor. and the first time a state legislature approved such a measure. nancy pelosi had tough words for the man who took her job, john boehner. listen to what she told msnbc's chris hayes. >> i will say this about john boehner. if he were a woman, they'd be calling him the weakest speaker in history. >> why do you say that? >> because they don't get anything done. rick scott could pick former

britain's prince harry continues his u.s. tour with a stop in new jersey today. this morning, the prince, alongside governor chris christie will visit beach areas devastated by hurricane sandy. jay, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. beautiful sunrise here. that light revealing continuing problem in the wake of superstorm sandy. the prince will spend time here visiting with victims as he tours the area, getting a close firsthand look at some of the problems there. back to seaside heights where he

will spend some time getting to know business owners who are reopening along the boardwalk. you take a look at that famed rollercoaster that's become a symbol for so many of the devastation left by this storm. really mangled and left there, partially submerged in the water. it's going to be removed by crews later today. they'll start that process. a part of the ride will be preserved. it will be used as a memorial, once the entire recovery effort has finished along the boardwalk. that's the latest live here at seaside, new jersey. i'm jay gray. >> do we know if he'll be meeting with politicians in new jersey or other stars, like the cast of "the jersey shore"? >> we know he's going to spend some time and taking part of the tour with governor christie. he will be getting time with him. also, will be visiting again with a lot of the residents here. a lot of the business owners. people who have been affected by the storm and struggling through recovery. that's something he made a point
