voices in the party are he had looking the charge, starting with michele bachmann. >> earlier this week, we heard the word "impeachment" tossed around here on capitol hill. is that something that should be considered? >> i will tell you, as i have been home in my district, there isn't a weekend that hasn't gone by that someone says to me, michele, what are in the world are you all waiting for in congress? why aren't you impeaching the president? he's been making unconstitutional be may have r unconstitutional behavior since he came into office. >> impeachment? is she serious? the gop is blaming the president for every single controversy in washington. >> the unifying themes in that pattern is, number one, an arrogance and view of government and, two number, a really dismaying willingness to mislead and to deceive the american people. >> there's something profoundly

unamerican about targeting your political opponents. >> if the a.p. story is taught anything, it should be to the media that when there is a taranacle, the media will be one of the early victims. >> our president, a desperate? it's not confined to the tea party wing of the party. look who was there today right next to michele bachmann. senate majority mitch mcconnell and today speaker boehner was repeating the line about the president's so-called arrogance. >> nothing dissolves the bonds between the people and our government like the arrogance of power here in washington. that's what the american people are seeing today from the obama administration. remarkable arrogance.

>> joining me now, richard wolffe and krystal ball. thank you both for coming on the show tonight. >> thanks for having us, reverend. >> krystal, let me start with you. have the gop gone off the deep end here? >> i think that they have never quite understood the election and up until now that the american people do not feel about the president that they do. they have all this hatred towards him and always assume the worst of him. so anything that they can see and find that ties into their caricature of him, they grab on to and they assume that the broader american public is going to make the same connection. they don't. they don't see him that way. they like him. they generally trust him. they think that he is doing the best that he can. so when they make these bizarre assertions that in a lot of ways don't even -- contradict themselves, they are really undermining their own point and really jumping the shark, as you

put it. t>>s if they ignored the elect right. >> they have the same narrow tea party group saying the same v venomous things from the president that just does not work with the broad base of americans. richard? >> i think the only thing that performance works for is auditioning for "the daily show." what are they thinking? if they want to buck the trend of history and give the president some seats in a midterm, they should do what republicans did in 1996 because -- in 1998, because trying to impeach a president, you could actually help his party gain seats. it didn't work. it didn't work then. let's face it, they are saying that he's arrogant. he's the commander in chief. they are saying he has an attitude? >> he's uppity. but let me go back to you for a

minute, krystal. the right wing heritage action group, this is serious to me, explicitly telling republicans to focus on scandal and not even try to pass laws. now, their letter -- let me read it to you -- part of it, anyway, says we urge you to avoid bringing any legislature to the house floor, rather than scheduling such legislation for consideration, we urge you to keep the attention focused squarely on the obama administration. so that means let's forget jobs, let's not deal with the sequester, let's not deal with immigration, let's keep the focus on these scandals, none of who have in any way, shape, or form, had a direct accusation by the president or anyone in the white house, for that matter. serious scandals but not at the level of the obama administration. >> and i think when you mention

immigration, that's the big one. when they are referring to things that create a schism within the conference, that was creating the schism before we started talking about these issues and heritage has been opposed to any kind of comprehensive reform package that would include bringing the millions of undocumented workers out into the shadows. and that is what is really sad here. there's a lot that is out here but one of the things, in their attempt to smear the president in any way they can, they are shredding any little bit of goodwill that had been built up, leading towards progress on these bills. >> yeah. >> how can you go back to a conservative district and sell your constituents on a bipartisan immigration plan when you're trying to convince them that the president is a taranicle despite? >> my concern is when you look at michele bachmann, rand paul,

they use the irs controversy to attack the health care law. >> your medical records will be evaluated by the irs that seems to have the ability and pension to use political -- political persuation and political op-ed. >> could there be potential political implications regarding health care, access to health care, denial of health care, will that happen based upon a person's political beliefs? >> i mean, first it was the death panels pulling the plugs on grandma. now it's irs agents saying you can't get a flu shot. >> i'm a new american. you have these questions about the constitution. i hear michele bachmann say what's the constitution? i checked. they looked at the health care

law and said, gee, it's constitutional. this argument doesn't work. they can't even make a statement. even michele bachmann has to phrase it as a question. could it be? will they do that? they don't have the guts to say, this is not true. the irs didn't tell the white house to do anything because it's illegal. it doesn't exist. it does not happen, it will not happen. they have to put these things out there in the hopes that someone just reads the signs and sees the smoke and puts it all together in their conspiracy-filled world. they are fueling conspiracies and they know it. that's why they are asking these questions. >> but again -- and i'm going to keep saying it every night -- the commissioner in charge of the irs when this happened was a bush-appointed republican. >> right. >> if they want to ask somebody about it, ask him. >> and the guy who got fired. >> yeah. i mean, it's -- like the oval

office, someone called down to some mid-level irs agents and said i want to you do this. but a new york times piece today said that -- well, it really gave insight into what the president is saying about all of the gop opposition. let me give you this. he told donors this week, "my thinking was after we beat them in 2012, well, that might break the fever and it's not quite broken yet." he also said, i sure want to do some governing. i want to get some stuff done. i don't have a lot of time. so it's frustrating and it's costing the american people, krystal. >> that's exactly right. and they have gone back and back to republicans in good faith. some of his critics on the left have said they've trusted him too much. he's tried too hard and they

political reporter for politico and errol lewis, host of new york one inside city hall. he had the first meeting with weiner. thank you both for being here today. >> good to see you. >> is weiner ready for a comeback in new york? >> well, he thinks she is. he has obviously talked to some people and has decided that now is the time. as you know, weiner was running for mayor four years ago and he saved $4 million from that campaign. he broke off that campaign when the scandal broke and he's got a whole bunch of money that he can use actually to run this time. he's got a real head start and i think that alone makes a mysterious candidate. >> well, we saw maggie sanford,

a district race, not a statewide race. let me show you something that has some of us still on pause. when he was asked recently, is there any chance more women could come forward in a tweeting scandal, let me show you what he said. >> well, i can tell you i never met these women that are at the end of the anonymous, i can tell you that they will not be able to find another picture or another person who may want to come out on their own. >> that's not exactly no, there are no more women and what happens if there are? >> we're going to have more rounds of this. he said, you know, the number i've said is six. six women. he is referring to a lawyer leeway saying i don't know what else will come out and we are entering a big unknown with

this. anthony weiner is a very aggressive politician and we are not looking at a field of -- you know, what is seen as great candidates. it's a pretty weak field. it's not clear what the city wants post mike bloomberg and prior to that, rudy giuliani. so we're looking at a very, very different type of race. however, a couple of points. to your point about sanford, it's very different than a lot of mayoralties, it's a power endrenched job. it is a ceos job. it's different in terms of trusting someone in terms of judgment. i think that's where his big problem is going to be. the other is how calm he can stay when he's getting questions every day about whether there's new pictures or not, he's had nasty exchanges with reporters

in the last three weeks. that can't continue. >> errol, when you talk about judgment, we're talking about redemption, people getting a second chance it would be hard to believe that people in new york would not have the ability to reach redemption feelings or second chance or people of south carolina and then someone they are close to. bill clinton, who ran the country as a ceo and people have got past their problems. in fact, bill clinton performed their marriage and you asked weiner whether he got advice from bill clinton. let me show you this response. >> i've had conversations with the president about things and he's been a great source of

support. >> can he do a bill clinton and remind people of bill clinton? >> that's a great question. if you think back to bill clinton, a lot of people thought he was getting railroaded, things that he got impeached over were sort of a sideshow and not particularly important. we don't really know what the public in general thinks about what anthony weiner did. also, bill clinton did a lot of things for a lot of people and he campaigned all over the country and neither of those things are true for anthony weiner. he's got to figure out on his own whether he can be credible

and that's nothing that bill clinton can do for him. >> atlantic wires writes that clinton's support for anthony weiner is getting awkward given 2016 will he need the support or will that hurt the narrative of him being a redeeming candidate reminding us of bill clinton? >> i think it's worth noting that the last time ta anthony weiner answered a question about the clintons that way. extended clinton land had raised eyebrows that he was talking about bill clinton the way he had, talking to the clintons the way he had. he is not close to the clintons. his wife is. a lot of clinton world remains furious with anthony weiner. they do not love what happened. they didn't like him before the scandal, a lot of people. so i don't think he needs the

there's a brand-new club in the gop, senators running scared. because of their votes against background checks, meet the founding members, senators jeff flake, rob portman, and kelly ayotte. after voting "no" on background checks, they saw their poll numbers tank back home. flake's approval rating plunged to a dismal 32%. portman's took a net drop of 18 points. and ayotte was a rising star in the gop but now she's falling fast. that's what happens when 75% of

your voters in your state support background checks and you vote against it. senator ayotte saw that firsthand in town hall meetings back home. >> you don't want to regulate guns. >> you had mentioned that owners of gun stores, that the extended background checks would cost. i'm just wondering why the burden of my mother being gunned down in the hall of her elementary school isn't as important as that. >> now these republicans are trying to spin their way out of trouble. senator flake said, i've always supported background checks. senator portman wrote a letter to which he insisted of a background check and senator ayotte wrote an op-ed claim

supporting background checks. sounds great but it's not really true. these senators are trying to pull a fast one. the only thing that they support is a gop background check bill that is so weak that did they think we would be fooled when they claimed to vote against something that they voted against? nice try. but we've got you. $55 million. they won't spend money to feed the poor. last night a republican-led house panel voted to cut food stamps by more than $20 billion over ten years for low-income americans. flares a lot of talk about scandals in washington. i think the real scandal is what the american people are trying to do to the american people. thanks for being on the show. >> thank you. >> republicans are spending money, they say, that we don't have but they don't want to spend money to feed the country. >> i'm glad you came on because i was about to go to sleep yawning.

i mean, it really is ridiculous as you say, $20 million cut from needy families, failure to appoint a budget that is fair and balanced from the american public and yet we want to take away health care for young people to stay on their parent's health care plan, take away health care for life-size limits this is really ridiculous and maybe they will do it another 30 times so the american public can yawn and say, enough of these guys. >> congresswoman, people that get help with food stamps can grow and do something positive or constructive in their lives. you personally have had to do

that and so have i. >> well, the nutrition programs that help people get on their feet, i think we're just dealing with a crowded people that don't understand the idea of a helping hand so people can help themselves and don't care about our nation's children who are losing head start teachers because of what they are doing. thankfully we have a president and a senate who can say enough of this. it was just another opportunity to put the american public to sleep. >> when you look at speaker boehner, he explained his party's plans to create jobs and it was all about appealing obama care. listen to this. >> weapon want time prove the economy and improve the prospects for creating jobs that

are our primary focus. these are the thousands and thousands of pages of obama care regulations and if we want jobs, we need to get to this. >> to their job creating plan is repealing obama care? >> reverend al, their plan for just about everything is repeal obama care. michele bachmann gets up and says, the irs scandal proves that we need to repeal obama care. >> yeah. >> so i think this is by one count the 37th vote. i think that's conservative. i think there have been arguably more than 40 different attempts to repeal obama care but maybe we should not be criticizing the house republicans to do this. every day they try to waste they are not cutting food stamps. perhaps we should encourage them

to spend the taxpayer's money. >> dana, you know i travel a lot. people are really hurting. this is not just pundits. where the rubber meets the road in this country, people need these health care -- the things that will benefit and provide things from the health care legislation. this is real stuff. >> that's right, reverend. there's a couple things we're talking about. one is the immediate cuts that people have felt already in terms of head start and stuff from the sequester. the loss to these food stamps, that's a long-term issue starting with next year's part of the agricultural budget in which they manage to increase funds going to farmers and these aren't hurting people right now. there's other things doing that and perhaps republican

colleagues saying that they are deficit hawks. they want to see the deficit come down. a new report shows that the deficit has shrunk by $800 billion since president obama took office. that's the fastest deficit reduction we've had since world war ii. the last one, $200 million despite all of the deficit shrinking. the gop is still refusing to roll back the automatic budget cuts, some of which dana just referred to. here's some local tv reports on how those cuts are hurting real people on the ground. look at this. >> cuts to the department of housing and urban development have left thousands of low income families struggling to get a place to live. >> getting kids like clamari in to head start is going to be more difficult. because of budget cuts, places

like this are taking less kids the next school year. >> thousands of meals may be cut. the director says it comes at a time when donations are already down. >> it's real stuff, congresswoman. >> that's right. and it's really staggering. i've been out in my district where we have worker who is are facing furloughs, we have head start teachers who are -- will lose their jobs and we won't be able to serve those students who are most in need. we have seniors who are dependent on meals on wheels because they need it to eat. it's pretty extraordinary what the gop is doing right now. as i said, 134 days where we could be focused on creating jobs and opportunity for the american people, instead, this is the garbage that we get out of this leadership and the garbage that we get out of this republican party and i think the american people are easily

seeing through that because we have greater levels of poverty since the great depression. more children are in need of a meal and it's what they dep spend on when they go to school every day and here we are cutting those things but repealing obama care and the health care law is reducing the deficit because we've managed to bring down health care costs. >> and you said the operative word, the health care law. it's the law. >> it is the law. it's not only the right thing to do, it's the law. >> thank you for your time. >> thank you. ahead, what had president obama laughing out loud on his recent trip to new york? and before the facts came out, they smeared susan rice's name. they went after her in an ugly way. why they should be ashamed.

we reported that house republicans voted earlier tonight for the 37th time to repeal obama care and governors across the country are refusing it, 20 states oppose expanding medicaid. they are turning down up to $90 billion for low-income families to get care. money that could save lives.
