little bit and there's one right behind it. this storm definitely has energy. it seems like it's cycling. it's sucking more energy. the lowering that we have seen throughout the day -- it's been typically low. it's raised up a little bit now. probably 700 or 800 feet. before when we were producing the larger storms -- you are watching breaking news coverage on msnbc on a rash of dangerous tornado in eastern oklahoma. right now there's three to talk about. one on a ground in a town near shawnee that came close if it did not hit a shopping mall there this evening. there's also a funnel cloud west and another one forming further west than that that could also hit the exact same town. all the people in shawnee are expected to stay underground if you can get there or in the safest place that you can find. certainly, there are reports of damage at this point. there weren't earlier and hopefully no injuries but we
5:01 pm
haven't heard that yet on i-4 where semi trucks have been blown over and car versus been flipped. there are requests for rescue on i-40 there in eastern oklahoma. we're waiting to hear a little bit more on that. let's go back to our coverage of kfor to hear more. these cone shaped looking features that look like funnel clouds and wouldn't be impossible to have funnel clouds quickly form out of this if these tighten up and this is to the west -- this is to the west of shawnee heading directly into shawnee. who is that? who do you have? mark dillard. what do you have. >> we're looking at the circulation to the north of i-40 here. we're at 18 and west tech which is a mile north of the highway of i-40 at the casino and we've got that circulation. it will try to tighten up. stingers coming down on it.
5:02 pm
still not very tight. still not very tight but i do have one damage report to pass along. kevin cosby, his home was hit down by bethel acres off of 102. everybody is okay. the shingles were taken off and a lot of tree damage mike but goes to show you that serve impacted by this folks. we're not out joyriding with this. we take everybody's life very seriously. even our own. so i'm going to pitch it back to you and we'll watch this just on the north side of shawnee back to you. >> i recommend you stay there. emily is still in shawnee. what do you have. >> caller: we decided to keep going north and we're going to eventually go east. we're looking at what was the second tornado. we're keeping ais eye on it. it didn't do a great attempt to recycle. hasn't recycled again.
5:03 pm
doesn't mean it won't again. keeping a close eye on that. we're about to enter hail. moving further north and then we're going to go east. >> okay. emily that second tornado has lifted; is that correct. >> the one that was on the secondary tornado, yes. yes. it is lifted. >> okay. very good. that's the middle tornado. recall if you've been watching us, emily was on the lead tornado which caused extensive damage down i 40. not to mention all the way doub into cleveland county and then there was a second tornado that was kind of in the middle and that did produce a tornado north of i-40, northwest of downtown shawnee. that tornado has lifted. now reid timer is on the lead tornado. the lead one produced the line share of the damage with this super cell and still has a tornado on it and it's still heading for prague. it is heading for prague so it is still on the ground heading
5:04 pm
for prague. this is a very bad circulation here. this is the back circulation and there is what could be a developing funnel cloud right there and that is going to be right over on the northern side of i-40 northwest of shawnee near 177. john, you're live. looking at that live. what do you see in that. >> we're seeing lowering. that is what i thought was the band filling it in. you can see it's row tatding. with it -- it's -- we're looking at the ground but if you look at the sky, you have the funnel cloud on your screen. double the width of it, the lowering is actually all rotating and that one piece is just spinning down south. so, this is definitely could be -- if it touches down a very very large tornado here. this is going to be just over pretty much the heart of
5:05 pm
shawnee. there's water towers and that's about where that area is, mike. >> take the quad box. let's go to the stream that's in the upper left. yeah. let's look -- reid's in the lower right. the lower right, that's the tornado southwest of prague and let's look at the upper left. i think that's emily. if it is, that's mark dillard -- can mark join us here live? mark's in shawnee. tell you what, i don't think mark -- mark is actually with us. he is in shawnee looking at that circulation. right around shawnee currently. he is actually in shawnee. emily sutton is with us. emily, go ahead. you're on. >> caller: if you can see, we still have a distinct lowering. i know we captured that second
5:06 pm
tornado for you. it was a very low end tornado. a rope tornado. but right now, this still has lots and lots of motion. it's getting closer and closer to the ground mike. we are right on this. we are looking at just north of i-40. stand by -- highway 18. highway 18. just north of 40. >> highway 18, just north of 40 and that's right where that circulation. >> do you see it? >> we can. we do see your screen. >> we're getting hail. this is the lowering. it's getting closer and closer to the ground mike. we're watching it. this is the same one earlier that produced 12 tornadoes. >> let's go to mark dillard. mark with an update from shawnee. >> yes, we just lost power on the east side of shawnee. i'm at west tech and harryson
5:07 pm
which is highway 18. the funnel is just to my south and west now. right on top of i-40. if it can tighten up -- it seems to have a problem, mike, even trying to tighten up all the way. it seems to just be drifting a little bit. it won't take much for it to do it. it just seems to be having a little bit of a problem. we hope that it can get past the populated area here of shawnee before anything happens if anything happens at all with it but it seems to be having a little bit -- i've got more scud on the north side to it. it seems to have a problem even trying to tighten up but if it can, we'll drop a tornado, it's about halfway down as it is now, but again, folks in shawnee proper, this is drifting along i-40 coming up to highway 18. if you're in the east side of shawnee take your tornado precautions, especially on the northeast side of shawnee out
5:08 pm
toward the casino. just one second. i seem to have it kind of trying to turn in -- maybe even -- maybe even trying to tighten up here mike. it looks like it's trying to slow up just a hair and turn in on itself. >> yeah. mark. i would agree with that. it's going to be over 18 and i-40. let's go to the storm tracker. in fact, it might -- it might try to tornado here coming up. let's go to the storm tracker because it's -- you'll see the evolution here just in the past 12 minutes. there it is now. look how the hook is coming around. you see that? the hook is tightening up. it's over 18 and 40 which is where the shawnee mall is located again on the northern side of shawnee. the circulation is strong but broad. it's strong but broad and it's trying to tighten up. you can see the way the hook is definitely coming around, the
5:09 pm
stinger is coming around. that's what mark is talking about. let's go tornado warning for creek, for lincoln. let's go back to chopper 4 with a look at that live from the chopper, john. >> caller: there it is mike. that lowering is raised back up a little bit and and heavy amounts of rain where the lowering was. it could be an indication to lose a little steam. if travis will pan to the right you can see other scud lowering right there. it has mild rotation in it but it's just the inflow sucking into the storm. but the second spot is rising. we're getting heavy, heavy down bursts of rain right over the northeast side of shawnee at this time. we're going to stay here and at this point, it's still rotating but it doesn't appear that it is getting it's act together. looks like it's actually falling apart more than condensing here mike. >> appreciate that live update
5:10 pm
from the chopper. still pretty good wind sheer on the eastern side of 18 over on the northern side of i-40. that would be on the northeastern side of shawnee. it is still pretty strong. just not really tight right now. latest report from reid timer and our team of trackers. west, southwest of prague a tornado trying to come down to the ground. you folks in prague a tornado warning continues for you. this one right here. still has a low level lock. that's the lead tornado that was over a half mile that was violent and was a wedge and barrel and wedge and barrel. it's still on the ground or at least trying to come down on the ground. you folks in prague need to be in your safe spot right now. best would be below ground or out of the way or a storm cellar or basement. get the safest place you can. i wouldn't take chances with it. too much violent motion and
5:11 pm
violent damage associated with it and it is coming directly into the town of prague. indication is that the tornado is trying to come down to the ground. that was about 45 seconds to a minute ago. it was three west of prague and now it's about a mile and a half west of prague. who is that? let's go back to emily's live stream. she has a nice visual on the wall cloud on the northeast side of shawnee. >> caller: we're on 18 and i-40 and while this has got it's act together -- it was rough rotation but now look at this lowering. it's very well defined and we're planning on hopping on i-40 unless there's still a way that we can't. i believe that we can still hop on i-40. we're following this. very ominous lowering here and guys, just o 10 or 15 minutes ago we caught a rope tornado. so this obviously is the
5:12 pm
environment where it can draw a tornado at any time. we're keeping a very close eye on it right now. >> what is your location. >> caller: we're almost at i-40. on 18 north of shawnee. >> on 18 north of shawnee. are you coming up on i-40 right now. >> we're heading outside toward i-40. looking off to the east. >> southbound on 18? >> caller: right. >> how far north of i-40 do you think you are right now? >> caller: how far north? >> how far north of i-40? >> caller: like a mile. one mile. if that. >> let's stay with your dream because you're likely going to cross the damage path. >> caller: okay. >> let's take a look and see what we have. >> caller: now we're getting into the rain shield. >> this is the whole shawnee mall area we're talking about in
5:13 pm
5:14 pm
prague, reid timer, on the ground. maybe fortunately it missed the town of prague. it's two and a half northwest of prague tornado on the ground and hopefully it missed prague. a tornado warning right now. paden. this is a large violent tornado. emily sutton is in the shawnee mall area. what do you have weather wise right now and have you seen any damage. >> caller: we just got on i-40. we're heading east by shawnee. we saw that lowering earlier and we have seen two tornadoes out
5:15 pm
of this. one very large tornado and then that rope tornado. and then it was trying to cycle and didn't quite do it. right now we're heading east. we have not seen any debris yet. but i will keep my eyes peeled for it as we're trying to follow this storm as it quickly races off to the east. >> that's good. that's a really, really good report. if you didn't come across any debris. >> caller: not yet. >> not yet. at 18 and 40. that's really very good news at least right there at 18 and 40 because that tornado tracked very, very close to 18 and 40. and as of right now emily has not seen any debris from that initial lead tornado. now she is tracking still eastbound she is tracking that circulation right there. let's go to kevin and linda live at the news desk. >> initial reports of the first fatality. we talked about how dangerous the storm is. the red cross received word of a
5:16 pm
fatality but indications appear to put it around the area of dale oklahoma. the people in that area reporting that the earth has been skouerred. no and power poles up. >> that's signs of what they call the grinder, that big tornado that just tears up everything. hate to hear that. we do know that the red cross is going through edmond, luther, surrounding areas to deliver water and supplies. also in contact with lincoln county and also search and rescue crews we're being told are requested for the shawnee area and emily might run into some of this as she travels east toward shawnee. you heard reid timer say there were flipped vehicles in that area. when you're in a car and a tornado hits it throws you everywhere and that could be some bad news coming out of there. >> if you have been watching the live coverage for the past four hours or so, you know the storm versus been developing throughout the edmond area and
5:17 pm
moving north, northeast, sometimes more east. but the sheriff is asking you to stay away from waterloo road. power lines down there. they're trying to get them up, but again, in all of these storm paths, please be considerate, stay out of the areas unless you have business there so emergency vehicles can get through. >> lookers can clog up the areas and the emergency crews can't be to where they need to be as quickly as they need to get there. we'll give you reports from the ground in edmond as soon as we get everyone dialled in. we have reporters and photographers getting video of the damage we have seen so far and our storm trackers are as well. as you saw from chopper four, that damage from the rule areas there were homes wiped out in that area. >> he has been looking at the aftermath. show us what you've got. >> reporter: well, linda and kevin t house behind me will tell the entire story.
5:18 pm
this home may have been the first hit during this afternoon's tornado out break. you can see the roof on this home completely ripped off. the homeowner was inside when that tornado went through. edmond police stopped by recently and said here in edmond there were about a dozen homes, maybe just less than a dozen homes damaged in this tornado that went through town. this home, though, they say is the worst of the bunch. mostly in edmond we have seen a bunch of trees down, power lines down, that sort of damage but how here this roof was completely torn off. basically when the tornado came through, it came straight overhead. knocked over a lot of the roof into the neighbor's yard and then actually, if you get behind me, you can see the track that this tornado took. you can see the distinct mark here in the trees as that tornado went over head. again. edmond police say luckily at this point here in edmond there's no injuries to report. that's the best news of all. the homeowner and the home
5:19 pm
behind me that may have been the first hit this afternoon said he escaped without injury. that's good news. we'll have much more on all the damage later on in the evening. back to you guys. >> thank you very much. i was over in the area and lived not far from there and was talking to you on the phone the damage i saw. looked like ef-1, however they determine damage. it is still scary. >> reid timer is reporting at least 45 houses damaged. some of those destroyed. he said they had major damage. several people were ejected from their vehicles on i-40. that's why the search and rescue crews were asked to go to that area and need for emergency personnel in sections of shawnee. we'll have crews there as well. let me show you the pictures we have been getting in this afternoon you have been kind enough to send in. we always ask you be careful. he took these pictures around his neighborhood. this is around 15th and bryant,
5:20 pm
33rd and bryant. >> down around old farm and springhill. those folks that live in edmond will recognize some of the play places. big trees torn upright there as well. this is probably in the old farm area and another shot of that tree right there. we have some shot of the funnels too that went through edmond. we might see those in just a minute but a lot of this is tree damage and some minor roof damage although that one home is going to need a lot of work to get that roof repaired. >> a friend that lives at 33rd and bryant said a lot of the roofs were damaged and destroyed. this is the oklahoma sheriff's office. this is northeast 234th at dobbs and luther. they then took a path through luther and that area. you can see the damage there. >> some of that hail that was in blanchard. so the storms there, some bigger
5:21 pm
than quarter size right there as well. so these tornadoes of course always bring with them a lot of falling ice from the sky. so it's every insurance company's nightmare and roofing companies of course don't like it but they definitely make a living off of this in this part of the country. >> and of course as we said at the top of this if you're joining us now, word of perhaps the first fatality in the storm coming from and dale oklahoma. the red cross is confirming they received word of a fatality. they hope it is the only one because we've had very see veer storms. >> we're talking about people being ejected from their cars and the tornado, the big wedge that emily was following as well as reid and john? chopper 4 looked like it was going right down i-40 which is a very heavily travelled highway here in oklahoma as is i-35. >> if you're traveling through the state and don't know oklahoma, they can just pop right down on top of you. mike, you have more news.
5:22 pm
>> we do. the bottom line is there's one tornado on the ground and it's likely an ef-4 tornado and it's coming in right now northwest of paden. just missed prague on the north side but it's heading for ixl. highway 48, southbound. this could be an f-4 tornado right here. still quite large. let's go to the north doppler and take a look at the velocities. you can see the bulls eye configuration. there's bristow. so this say large tornado on the ground. it's really intensified in the last few minutes as it lifted temporarily and then bounced for awhile down by prag. but i'd say highway 48 are the rule areas up here. ixl which is a small community south of bristow.
5:23 pm
if you know anybody there that might possibly live in a mobile home, you need to find a way to get ahold of them and tell them that they have to be out of the way or underground when this thing comes through southern creek county. i'm 100% positive there's no doubt about it. they have to be out of the way or below ground. storm cellar, safe roof, interior closet or bathroom is not going to cut it. this is a big violent tornado right here. reid timer is still on it. we've been talking to reid. he's in and out of the bear cage and all that. he's still on it and it's a big tornado. we do not want to have this thing go plow through the smaller towns and have somebody not know about it. southern creek county, south of bristow, that could be a half mile wide plus at -- f-4 plus tornado. into highway 48 and the creek county line. that's where it is heading.
5:24 pm
that is a big, big tornado right there. now, i think -- let's go to bob. he is backtracking with damage over by the fire lake casino. this is what reid told us about earlier. now john showing it to you live. go john. >> and yeah, he'll come back. this is i-40 near 177. go john, you're live. >> yeah, i-40 and 177. we have troopers on the way. we have two semitrucks -- >> and we'll stay here with john. the signal will come back. this is 177. that's the cross over there it looks like and i-40. okay. you're back. it will come back. we'll stay with this. but this is the significant damage over by the fire lake casino and just on the northwestern side of shawnee on the large barrel tornado that emily was showing you and reid was showing you when it was
5:25 pm
crossing i-40 there on i-77 and i-40. let's go back to emily sutton here with a live update zblsh. >> caller: we're heading east on i-40. we're about five miles west of highway 377. we're driving through very heavy rain. we have the challenge of out dated radar but we're going this way north of i-40. we have not seen any debris. we're going through very heavy rain right now. >> appreciate that. more debris falling from the sky. two south of bristow. so the debris is being carried up to near tulsa. it's in the jet stream aloft and there's debris now all the way up to bristow falling out of the sky from these tornadoes, probably the one that's still on the ground northwest and north of paden.
5:26 pm
or it could be from shawnee but there's debris falling out of the sky in tulsa. so the turner turnpike might have debris on the road. let's go back to chopper 4 live. >> you can see that semi truck is teetering on that overpass. about half the cab of the trailer is on the overpass. one completely blown there it is. there's its contents. that's the truck. as you can see the damage to it. and there's the trailer. and in the top left of your screen, you're seeing another suburban that has heavy damage to it as well. highway patrol's on scene. see that black car -- that black pickup truck on your screen. it looks like it got smashed by the truck as it got blown over the overpass. this is no joke. when we say get off the road, this really is. and just to your left if travis will pan that way, we have another semi that's laid on its
5:27 pm
side. so a total of three semis right here. go to your left, travis. three semis here, right there, are completely gone. and then we'll zoom out here just a bit. and we're going to pan up and to the left. and we're going to show you some trees that a damaged. looks like a concrete plant here and damage. this was right there when we were talking. you know, we said it was like north of 3w there on i-40. this is where it was at. this is definitely the damage that it did as travis will continue to pan to the left. just see the trees that are messed up. all the houses. this thing just grinded the whole tops of the trees off here, mike. >> john, appreciate that. we just really literally want to stay with you. there are two things here that are most important thing. what has happened and what is happening right now. we're going back and forth between the two. let's go back to john here. this damage is quite extensive. >> this is one way we can tell
5:28 pm
from the air that it's a tornado. everything's twisted. a lot of your straight line wind and microbursts that happened, everything's blown on the one side. those are good sized trees that are ripped up in this housing edition. travis will pan back out and go to the left. there's some houses right here on the end of this road. we have fire crews there. looks like they're going door-to-door just to make sure everybody's okay. and we'll kind of stay right here in the area. i haven't been flagged down yet, but i'm always watching just to make sure that nobody's down there that's injured that we might be able to help. but this whole little area, everything looks like it's -- hang on a second, mike. everything here in this area is on at least an acre. the houses are pretty spread out and just debris everywhere. just north of this field probably half a mile there's debris and house pieces. some of these houses are completely gone. and most of them look like
5:29 pm
they're just your standard break over frame, stick frame roof construction, asphalt and shingles that are completely damaged. so this is where it touched down and continued to head to the east. i'm not seeing any damage more to the east here just north of i-77 -- or east of i-77 but this house took a definite hit. travis, pan out and go to the right. >> john, where from i-40 is that? >> i'm sorry. from i-40 it's -- i don't know -- maybe a 1 1/8. so i guess the next road -- i'll zoom in on the gps. just 1 1/4 mile. and east of i-77 here. definite damage. you know, seeing all this. it's lucky everybody got to make it out okay. i think by now we will see some
5:30 pm
ambulances. if something did happen. it looked like they hid and they took their necessary storm precautions here. but if you're westbound on i-40, they're diverting traffic around. traffic starting to get backed up here. definitely like kevin and lynn talked about before, if you're trying to be a looky loo, i'd stay in your house. don't clog up the roadways because you want to see the damage. let emergency crews and everybody else do that for you. as you can see, this neighborhood here there's not a house that's not hit. there's not a house that's not hit. >> that's from josh welsh there life. we have ongoing severe weather in areas. they're trying to get east of our viewing area. there are areas to talk about. new warning here. severe thunderstorm warning for kay county right now. let's go to the storm tracker.
5:31 pm
there's no organized, you know, well-balanced spinning motion. but they do have some kind of stretched out cyclones with them. but there is a severe thunderstorm warning in effect. that's talking about blackwell, new kirk. a little bit of a spin west of takawa right now. but kind of stretched out. not to say they may not produce large hail. they sure could and they're severe with a lot of intense lightning. they're moving to the east/northeast at around 30 miles per hour for you folks in kay county. let's go back to the weather show. there's still an intense storm on the ground right now. and it is going to be just to the southwest of ixl is where it is right now. and it is an intense circulation going on in fusky county. let's go to the storm tracker. we can take a look at that. it is now going to be tracking very close to the town of welty.
5:32 pm
welty and north. and in that circulation that is southeast of prague. that's going to be tracking down i-40 on the northern sides of i-40. i believe emily sutton is still tracking that. let's see if we can go to emily live. >> you are watching breaking news on msnbc on a rash of tornadoes that have broken out in oklahoma. we're seeing the damage and an unconfirmed report of one fatality. we have seen homes and trees ripped apart. and trucks and cars literally blown off the highway. we are keeping a close eye on this and will keep you abreast of the situation torrent on msnbc.

5:36 pm
dangerous, if not more so. in our next story, officers on highway patrol find themselves in harm's way. >> come on, hurry! hurry, hurry! come on, come on, let's go! >> on an icy interstate, a car is crushed between the police vehicle and a careening tractor trailer. >> i thought for sure the driver of that car would have been seriously injured, if not killed. >> february 13th, 2007. officers douglas eagler and bill allen report for duty at the erlanger, kentucky police department. at 7:00 p.m., the night is already wet and icy. >> when we started our shift, we had to use our flashlights to knock the ice off our overhead light bar. so we knew we were in for probably a long night. >> bad weather for drivers means hard and dangerous work for policemen on patrol. as the officers head north up interstate 75, they're almost immediately dispatched to the scene of an accident. >> northbound 75 at the 184.4
5:37 pm
mile marker for report of a collision with injuries. >> officer allen's dash cam is recording as they approach the accident site. >> there was one vehicle that had struck the wall on the left-hand side of the road. >> the officers pull over to check on the car and its occupants. they know they're in a risky position because of the slick roads. >> are you all right? are you all right? >> i don't know how i made it through all this. >> the vehicles were having a tough time maneuvering around on the interstate. >> but they're still taken by surprise at what happens next. >> my vehicle, our police cruiser, was struck by another vehicle. it spun around and was facing in the opposite direction. >> they've been rear-ended. the crash shakes the dash cam which briefly shuts off, but then restarts. >> our police car was facing oncoming traffic in the middle lane of the interstate.
5:38 pm
>> then the officers realize something much worse is on the way. >> here comes a semi! >> i saw an oncoming tractor-trailer coming directly towards the scene of the collision we were just involved in. >> as they stare, horrified, at the behemoth bearing down on the cruiser, another driver on his evening commute has pulled up behind the pile-up. >> i thought i saw two headlights spinning in front of me, two different cars, and as i got closer and closer i realized that it was two cars spinning so i screeched on my brakes and came to a complete stop. >> ronald powell jr. has avoided an accident but he's completely unaware of the approaching tractor-trailer. officer eagler sees that the woman who was just rear-ended his patrol car is right in the path of the truck. the woman is off camera. if the officer doesn't get her out of harm's way, he's certain she will die. >> i was yelling at her, come on, come on, come on, you need to get out of there. >> come, on, come on, come on! >> i pulled her car door open and grabbed ahold of her,
5:39 pm
looking over my shoulder at the tractor-trailer that was oncoming. all i really had time to do was push her towards the retaining wall. threw her down on the ground. >> it all happens in moments and powell, sitting in his car, becomes aware something is horribly wrong. >> why did they just jump out of the car like that? that's when i heard an air brake on the semi, it was like goo, goo, goo and that's when i felt the impact. i didn't see anything happen. i just felt it. i felt glass cutting my face. >> sheltered against the median wall, the officers are amazed to see the semi miraculously bounce safely past them. >> i never thought the wheel of a semi would look that big as it went past us. >> you see from the video that the tractor-trailer steers right, which causes the double tandem trailers to bounce off the wall and went right around us. had that wall not been there, they would have taken out
5:40 pm
