good morning, everybody. tornadoes rip through the nation's midsection. the obama administration has a tough week as they say they won't back down on the irs and benghazi controversies. 100,000 people brace for what could be a commuting nightmare. one lucky customer at this florida supermarket is about $600 million richer. yahoo's billion dollar attempt to court a younger, hipper crowd and the moon takes the biggest hit ever recorded.

good morning. powerful storms tore through the nation's heartland last night. this morning they turned deadly. one confirmed fatality in a nasty system that stretched from texas to minnesota. oklahoma was one of the hardest hit where a state of emergency has been declared. more now from nbc's jay gray in oklahoma city. >> reporter: storms lining up and liting up the radar last night. spawning dozens of tornadoes. the most efficiency hit sunday was in shawnee, oklahoma, where a twister splintered this neighborhood several blocks, completely wiped away. a trail of debris stretch as cross several states now. homes and businesses ripped apart. >> no sooner had we got in the basement and we saw, you know, heavy wind and heavy rain. and after it subsided, we came out and saw we sustained quite a

bit of damage. >> reporter: snapped power lines and stripped trees, two 18 wh e wheelers were pushed on to their sides. just like tens of millions across the midwest who continue to be on edge, forecasters warning severe conditions could continue for the next few days here. jay gray, nbc news, oklahoma city. let's get more on this now. bill karins is here. i understand that this severe weather is something that is still threatening the area. >> yeah. the same areas hit yesterday will get hit again today with the possibility of more tornadoes and more big tornadoes. they call that a stove pipe tornado. literally a stove pipe coming up out of the top of your attic. as far as what we're dealing with out there today, as far as last night and this morning, we have three threat areas. des moines got hit pretty hard, too. wichita had a huge scare. ef-1 tornado that went through the downtown area. a huge one we've been seeing the

damage and the fatality, shawnee, oklahoma. now as far as the threat right now, all of our tornado watches are gone. in other words, we do not expect any more tornadoes for the next 12 hours. 1 hours from now, 4:00 local time in the central u.s., that's where we'll be seeing more storms firing up later. now as far as any bad weather this morning in st. louis, we have a line of storms going through and gusty winds. those are weakening. right near springfield, we have storms. later on this afternoon, areas of yellow, slight risk. goes through the great lakes and down to north texas. this area is a moderate risk of severe storms. the tornadoes will formulate this afternoon from wichita falls and oklahoma city and spread northeast towards arkansas and missouri later on this evening. so, again, betty, we'll see more tornadoes. this will be day four. so far we've had about 45 to 50 in the last three days. we'll have another dozen to 20 later today. thank you, bill. to a developing story out of

north korea. reports this morning it fired its fifth missile in three days. the south korean government says the north fired a short range projectile missile into waters off the eastern coast around 11:00 this morning local time. now all of this follows four recent launches including three on saturday. the north said today is exercising its right to test rockets as part of regular military drills. to washington now. president obama desperately wants to get back on message today after just a bruising week. but republicans have different plans and suddenly a whole lot to talk about. nbc's danielle leigh is in washington with all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. president obama would like to get past last week's controversies but with trouble brewing on three fronts and republicans getting increasingly suspicious that, won't be easy. >> republican leader? >> reporter: republicans are starting to be bouied by a series of scandals that are forcing the white house to focus on damage control.

>> there is intimidate throughout the administration. >> reporter: at a fund-raiser, president obama tried to shift the focus. >> despite sometimes the doom and gloom of what you hear emanating out of washington, you should be optimistic about this country. >> reporter: a senior white house adviser also appeared on five morning talk shows calling accusations of mismanagement offensive and absurd. >> there's no question that republicans are trying to make political hay here. >> reporter: on capitol hill, two more hearings this week will examine the irs targeting of conservative political groups. >> we need to find out who made those decisions, hold them to account and see how high up the chain it went. >> reporter: republicans are continuing to dig into the administration's handling of the terrorist attack in benghazi. others are criticizing the justice department's seizure of journalist phone records. >> i know what the message being sent is that if you talk to the

press, we're going to go after you. >> reporter: the ap says it's losing sources because of the seizure. another consequence the white house contends with this week. and the head of the associated press says what the justice department did is unconstitutional and they have not ruled out the possibility of legal action. reporting live, danielle leigh, betty, back to you. a widespread dose of commuter chaos could be in store for tens of thousands of people traveling along what industry experts call the busiest rail line. this as metro north workers rebuild 2 #,000 feet of damaged track following friday's collision between two trains in southwest connecticut. the ntsb is investigating what went wrong. in connecticut alone, about 125,000 passengers travel per day through the area where the derailment occurred and about 30,000 people use the stations where service is closed f the train commuters take to the roads, officials say they would literally encounter a parking

lot. commuters are urged to car pool or work from home if possible. friday's collision injured more than 70 people. nine of them remain hospitalized. one critically. all right. so a little extra light is shining on the sunshine state this morning. and that is because someone in florida walked into a publix supermarket and bought the single winning ticket for the richest powerball jackpot in history. it is estimated to be worth a whopping $590 million. lucky person. all eyes are on tampa. that's where the ticket was sold. take a look at your ticket. the winning numbers were 10, 13, 14, 22, 52 with the powerball of 11. the lucky win kerr claim his or her ticket as soon as this morning so stay tuned. as you know, the chances to win that was one in 175 million. fortunately, i didn't win. but now here is a look at your dish of scrambled politics this

morning. despite a trifecta of controversies, there's actually good news for president obama. a new cnn poll shows 53% of americans agree with the way he's handling his job. that is up from 51% back in april. the survey was conducted friday and saturday which is after a bruising week for the president. a virginia politician is drawing fire for once comparing planned parenthood to the ku klux klan. e.w. jackson was nominate the as the republican candidate for lieutenant governor on saturday. it is a video that he posted last fall that's getting all kinds of attention. in it, jackson accuses what he calls the civil rights establishment of selling out their christian values in order to support same-sex marriage and abortion. >> planned parenthood has been far more lethal to black lives than the kkk ever was. and the democratic party and their black civil rights allies are partners in this genocide. >> iowa senator chuck grassley is using his twitter account to

point out where he thinks america is suffering. the republican posted, "u.s. has no foreign policy. we should remember what happened. the last time we had no foreign policy it was september 1939. hitler started world war ii in poland. reports this morning that the fbi has joined the case into michelle ba michel mischelle back man's failed presidential campaign. the federal election commission says former nevada senator john ensign agreed to pay a $32,000 penalty. all this stems from a 2008 campaign contribution made by his parents to one of his campaign staffers who was then his mistress. and newark mayor corey booker disclosed he made $1.3 million in speaking fees since 2008. the 44-year-old democrat is

syrian forces aided by the militant group hezbollah are moving into a key territory long held by rebel forces. anti-government activists and state-run media reports this news. if successful, it would be a major set back for opponents of president assad. the fbi is looking into the deaths of two of its agents over the weekend. this happened during a training exercise. both were members of the elite hostage rescue team based in quant he could, virginia. a gay pride parade in georgia was a no go after thousands of anti-gay protesters crowded the streets. police guarded several dozen gay activists and bussed them out of the area before it got violent

there. a former philadelphia police officer once a guest at president obama's first address to congress after being praised for his bravery is actually behind bars this morning. richard decoatsworth is accused of raping two women at drug point after being forced to use drugs. alaska's volcano sent steam and ash nearly 0,000 feet into the sky on sunday. check it out. officials say it's not enough to raise the aviation threat for airlines. and we're getting our first look at the meteor slamming into the surface of the moon. this happened in march. and it lit up the sky so bright that it was visible to the naked eye. look at the shots right here. nasa says it is the largest lunar explosion that they have ever seen, equal to five tons of dynamite. that is remarkable. now for your first look at this morning's business headlines, we turn to cnbc.

the irs controversy, how difficult will it be for the twhous really shake this perception? >> you saw yesterday that the president's senior adviser went on to a bunch of talk shows and accused republicans of taking this too far. he said, of course, he's upset about the irs scandal. the writeoffs will continue to act quickly. they're going to go before congress for a hearing. you'll see a lot more questions coming up. what we still don't know is how this whole controversy at the irs started. the white house is trying to move past it at the president's meeting today. they're going to try to keep going on jobs and other thins. it's going to be very difficult. >> definitely. we want to zero in more on the irs investigation. house speaker boehner and louisiana governor bobby jendal are calling for jail time. do you expect that could actually happen to those responsible? >> i think if it goes up the chain enough. lower level employees in cincinnati said they were doing this to get through the conservative applications.
