speaking of president obama, it's commencement speech season. he offers advice to college graduates over the weekend as his team goes on the offensive on the sunday talk show circuit. the new message coming from the white house and the response from his critics. >> we were almost right under the tornado at this point. we can hear the roar. we can still see in contact with the ground farther off to the northeast. >> an amazing path of destruction cleaning up after another run of powerful tornadoes. the midwest braces for another round of storms. and buying back into relevance. the deal yahoo hopes will bring back the glory days and what it means for users of the popular blogging service tumblr. you got it. it's monday and it is "way too early". it is monday.
2:31 am
good morning, everybody. before i try to read 1500 stories in nine minutes of news, i'll start with your monday assignment. soccer icon david beckham hung up his cleats over the weekend. his teammates showed their appreciation for his storied career. all right. this shot is from saturday's game. we saw this. we immediately thought "way too early" caption contest, right? that's what you think. tweet us at hashta hashtag #waytoowitty. we're putting the best ones on later in the show. but right now we do have to get to the news on this monday, may 20th. and we begin with tornado season which has gone from quiet to deadly in just a matter of days. over the weekend, tornado after tornado struck the middle part of the country and the pictures are absolutely stunning. this video is of a tornado that struck right outside of wichita, kansas. a weather chaser captured this photo of the same exact storm. in oklahoma, at least four separate tornadoes hit across
2:32 am
the state prompting the governor to declare a state of emergency in 16 counties. one person has been killed. 21 injured. nbc affiliate kfor shot this video of a truck that apparently was literally blown off of a highway overpass. that tornado was reported mile wide ef-4 which i believe bill karins confirms is the second strongest on the scale, i believe. yeah. up to 200 miles an hour in terms of wind. that touched down not far from oklahoma city. there was also widespread flooding as far south as georgia at seven inches of rain did quite a bit of damage. a little canoeing going on out there. some of the biggest cities in the midwest could see more severe weather today. let's go to bill karins. bill, this severe weather it like from wisconsin all the way down to the south, right? >> yeah. now we go further south. the dallas area is included into today. i'll show you how far north it s

it is absolutely amazing. the storm tracker technology is so great right now. i was just incredible watching all of this in live real time yesterday. the huge tornadoes on the ground. and with how strong and powerful they were, it's amazing we only had one fatality. we didn't have more injuries. mostly the tornadoes yesterday were rural areas which significantly help number tornado watches throughout right now. we have 24 reported tornadoes yesterday. making a total of about 45 or 46 over the friday, saturday, sunday time period. we're going to see more today. as brian was mentioning, the area of greatest concern in red here from denton to oklahoma city. the tornadoes will form. brian, they'll spread across the state of oklahoma once again. almost the same spots that we dealt with yesterday. >> all right. we'll see weather for the rest of the country in ten minutes. thank you. let's turn attention o politics. critics continue to hammer the obama administration over the irs scandal. republicans say they're gearing up for more congressional hearings on the matter. yesterday on meet the press,

senate mi yort leader mitch mcconnell went after the president and his team for handling of the scandal. >> there is a culture of intimidation throughout the administration. it's no wonder that the agents and the irs sort of get the message that the president demonizes i had opponents, the head of their union demonizes -- >> but, senator, that is a leap that can you make as argument. but you don't have fact to back it up. you can create it. >> the investigation -- >> you can talk about a culture. do you have any evidence that the president of the united states directed what you call a culture of intimidation at the irs to target political opponents? >> i don't think we know what the facts are. >> we don't. we learned over the weekend that weeks ago the white house's chief lawyer learned about the irs targeting conservative groups. that information was withheld from president obama. the president became aware of the scandal at the same time as the public on may 10 bth.
2:35 am
the department of justice is also getting quite a bit of attention. the president and ceo of ap made an announcement. >> the rules require them to come to us first. but in this case they didn't. claiming an exception saying that if they had it would have posed a substantial threat to their investigation. but they have -- they've not explained why it wochlt we can't understand why it would. we just think they went about it the wrong way. so sweeping, so secretively, so abusively and harsingly and overbroad that it constitutes -- that it is an unconstitutional act. the government has no business having control over all monitoring all of this news gathering information from the associated press. and if they restrict that news gathering apparatus, you're right, the people of the united

response to the irs scandal and 59% believe the same is true when it comes to benghazi. now let's get an update on that train accident late last week. actually, it's on the weekend, on friday. train service for several major cities expected to be a mess for days after a weekend train collision in the state of connecticut. the ntsb found the two metro north trains were going 70 miles an hour just before they came in contact on friday evening in fairfield, connecticut. the preliminary investigation uncovered a damaged rail but it's actually not clear if there was damage during the wreck or if it contributed to the accident. 70 people were injured and a handful remain hospitalized including one in critical condition. in the meantime, the incident is impacting amtrak and other rail service into new york and boston and that northeast corridor for perspective if you're not from this part of the country, it is considered the busiest in the country when it comes to train travel. let's go overseas. the situation in syria is moving
2:38 am
closer to growing from a civil war to an all out regional conflict. hezbollah is working with the government to try to retake a key rebel held city where the ground battle is characterized as intensed. hezbollah has long reported to be sending fighters to assist the syrian government and israel has threatened to destroy more syrian weapons. a new u.n. report estimates 1.5 million refugees have been displaced by war with no sign of slowing. this is often the untold story in conflicts like this. diplomatic efforts have been strained between the u.s. and russia as top american officials scolded moscow for sending anti-ship missiles to prop up assad's government. meanwhile, you can welcome the korean peninsula back to the top of the list of regions we need to worry about now. over the weekend south korean media reported pyongyang test launched four short range, what they're calling, projectiles. they're not saying missiles but rather projectiles and has

2:40 am
>> wait. that means they pay all their money goes to the government? >> yeah. and then some more. because what happened was that the government in place now took away a cap which the sarkozy government before put in. said you couldn't pay more than 50% tax. they took away that cap. and it now means you have to pay 100% plus on your tax bill from the previous year. that is nasty. and one more for you. j.p. morgan has a really interesting meeting in tampa this week despite the fact that shares are up over 19% year to date. jamie diamond's group is going great guns. they want greater control over the company and split the chairman and ceo role that jamie diamond had since 2006. big stories. >> a lot of people say he wants to keep the chairman job so when he retires as ceo, he can stay on as chairman. i want to ask you, yahoo obviously, a high profile ceo. they make a big acquisition. what is it and will it make a

2:42 am
so far, no winner stepped forward. the town is buzzing. supposedly, one person did not show up for work on sunday. but like to me that is like a good day. you know, only one person doesn't show up for work. i don't know that is necessarily the person. the odds on that winning ticket, $11 175 million to one. david beckham, of course, kicked his last corner kick and teammates gave him quite the sendoff. we want you to tweet us, hashtag #waytoowitty. here's what i came up with. hey! when it comes down, just give it a little squeeze. they say his ass is amazing. that's right. i just said that at 5:42 a.m. on the east coast. i said that word. that's right. still ahead on "way too early," what is better than play-off hockey? how about overtime play-off hockey. the pens and sens up next. what a performance from miguel at last night's billboard music
