memorial day is the official start of summer but it is a day to pay the tribute for those who honored this country. nbc news' tracy potts is in washington with a preview. >> hi, betty. happy memorial day. that will not be the focus today here in washington. yes, the president is headed to arlington, also the focus today on how america plans to deal with the war on terror going forward. today, america remembers the loss of brave soldiers who died fighting for freedom, with flags at every gravy, this morning, president obama heads to arlington cemetery to once again lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown, looking ahead, america faces new threats, skwaed dismantled but not destroyed. the president wants to scale back our use of force against terrorists. >> not every collection of thuks that labels themselves al qaeda

oklahoma. a tragic turn in the search for a teenage boy swept away by raging flood waters in texas. rescue teams found his body sunday bringing the death toll from flooding in san antonio to three t. bodies were found saturday after flood waters up to 10-feet trapped them inside their cars. it dumped more than a foot of rain in just a 24 hour-hour period. its record rainfall for san antonio in may t. storm was so strong, it swept cars and even a city bus off the streets. well, while memorial day oourm usually marks the beach seventeen. in some parts of the country, it looked a lot like winter, oh, yeah, an upstate new york city mountain was blanketed with fresh powder. in this video, you can see how the blizzard like conditions turned the roads into a one-lane mess. in new hampshire, santa's village amusement park was forced to close because of too much snow, can you believe it?

we are sure some kids are upset about the closure, hopefully the irony of it all wasn't lost on that snowman. meteorologist bill kierans is here. i can't believe it is snowing. this is the unofficial start of summer. what is going on? >> saturday was, yesterday wasn't great, saturday was unbelievable. so that storm is gone. so what's left? we talked about the horrible flooding out of san santonio we are dry down there, at least. but all the problems today and really the next couple days will be through the mid-west. we kind of have that typical clash of the cold air. that storm exiting nujd -- new england. in between is where the thunderstorms are rocking and rolling. we have a large complex of storms. all the white flashes on there are the lightning strikes. this is a classic collection of storms rolling through the central plains with wind damage as the primary threat. a severe thunderstorm watch out

for the des moines area, to ames, iowa, to zain st. joseph's. this will roll through the area over the next half hour to two hours. we watch it around st. louis about noon today if it holds together. the problem is we have additional storms dying out, bringing rain to indiana and illinois. so we have flash flooding concerns. we have one complex after another. we have to watch our rivers, including the mississippi. today, a severe thunderstorm watch is out for a few spots. later this afternoon, we get another round of storms into tonight. anywhere in yellow, winds damage, large hail, the possibility of isolated tornadoes, especially southern nebraska an areas of northern kansas. we will watch out for areas there in the northern portion of kansas. as far as memorial day goes, it
