conservative congresswoman michele bachmann won't run for election next year because for her eight years is long enough. >> be assured my decision was not in any way influenced by any concerns about my being re-elected to congress. rest assured, this decision was not impacted in any way by the recent inquiries into the activities of my former presidential campaign or my former president staff. >> but, in fact, bachmann was facing a very tough challenge. her 2012 opponent is running again, and he raised $100,000 in a week after announcing. she won by just 5,000 votes last time in the most heavily republican district in minnesota. of course, bachmann's unrelented criticism of president obama gave her a platform for runner for candidate. sounding like the candidate that she was she used the video to
7:01 am
point to benghazi, the irs scandal, what she called the foreign policy blunders and the despicable treatment of israel. >> unfortunately today i'm even more concerned about our country's future than i have ever been in the past. so masois issues, we're clearly the wrong track. >> what does it all mean? let mess bring in politico's alex. >> good morning. >> why now. >> you know just in the introduction, michele bachmann, as much as she's saying it doesn't have much to do with it, this would be the moenment to bl if you were worried about either or both of those things. it does give bachmann the chance to sort of serve out her term, maybe getting away a little bit from the idea that she bailed on a tough re-election fight.
7:02 am
>> well, we just got a statement from her opponent. let me read part of it for you. as recent polling indicates, our message is resonating with the people of the six lgts district and she recognized that. she also recognize it would be an uphill battle going forward. i mean, jim, she was already running tv ads, vowing to repeal president obama's plan. what does that say if you're running 17 months out and then decide you're going to drop out. >> we don't know exactly what michele bachmann recognizes, whether in her heart of hearts, she didn't think she was going to win, whether in her heart of hearts she was nervous about the investigation since there was no chance to interrogate her during that very slick eight-minute video announcement which is sort of the counterpart to anthony weiner, the scandal with the tainted soul who came out with his very slick announcement that
7:03 am
he was running for new york mayor. but in what you call the most heavily republican district she won by 1% after outspending the guy 10-1. and in the district the president didn't do all that well and he got about 41%. so whatever true motive is, she surely had an uphill climb? >> she's not the first to step aside. i guess, alex, what does she do now? obviously sarah palin left office and she had a tv platform for a while and jim demint. what do you think? will she go to the heritage foundation or a research council? >> i would be surprised if she went to the heritage foundation. we have discovered if you're a conservative firebrand on either side of the spectrum and you want to leave office to make a public servant salary, that would be a pretty good economic bet. >> she's also a former member of
7:04 am
the tea party caucus. a couple of years ago she gave her own tea party response to the state of the union which gives you a sense of her own platform, but the economic issues are less of an issue now frankly. i don't know, jim. is the tea party sputtering because of that? is that why she felt maybe she was losing some influence. >> well, for sure, some of the economic news we get, people less nervous about selling their home, having a little bit more disposable income, in generally no longer feeling sick and tired, that certainly plays a part. and if you're the democrats and i confirmed this morning with jim israel who overseas their congressional effort to recapture the house. they need 17 seats, chris, this clearly was one of the 55 that they've got on their list, now held by republicans that they think they can get. but i think it's "way too early" to know what's going to happen,
7:05 am
particularly in some of those republican primaries next year and what the impact of the tea party may well be particularly on more moderate republicans who are scared as hell about being, quote, married to the primary in the nation's capitol. >> i want to bring in senator barry sanders. good morning. >> good morning. >> you've probably heard the argument and it's come from democrats and democrat analysts that the reason conservatives don't want to let go of benghazi or other troers ves is they nee someone else. do you think they're doing better, especially in light of the unemployment rates? >> that is a good question, chris. the answer is yes and no. compared to 2008, no question we're doing much better, unemployment is down. we have cut the budget deficit
7:06 am
in about half. state budgets are doing much better. california. knew they're running a sur prus. that's the good news. let me give you the not so good news. that is while official unemployment today is at about 7.5%, real unemployment counting those people who have given up looking for work or they want to work full-time is almost 14% and if you look at young people unemployment or minority unemployment, the numbers are way, way higher than that. more significantly, if you look at the trends impacting the middle class from way, way back, median middle income has gone down $5,000 and most jobs today are not good paying jobs. they're low paying jobs. and perhaps most frightening is we're seeing more income and
7:07 am
wealth in equality. so between 2009 and 2012 all of the income in america went to the top 1% and the gap with everybody else is as wide as it has been since the 1920s. >> they'll argue to that. you've been saying there's a gap between the rich and poor and we ought to tax the wealthy more. we've been saying the exact opposite. we were the ones who said the sequester would not be a doomsday scenario. we are the ones who said the 2% payroll tax increase will not kill us, and, look, it has. . what would you say to those republicans? >> well, what i would say to those republicans is that right now there is massive suffering in this country, and that is my point. the fact of the matter is unemployment remains much, much too high, and despite what my
7:08 am
republican friends are saying, we need a massive jobs program to put people back to work, rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure, and transforming our energy system. you talk about sequestration. right now there are millions of seniors who need the meals on wheels program and that program has been cut. so you have the most fragile people in the country. they're sitting at home, trying to get a decent meal a day, and a republican friends have fought to cut that program. you've got kids graduating college today deeply in debt and our republicans friends want to cut the pell grant program. what i would argue is for a significant number of people in the country today, the economy is not doing well. it's doing pretty badly. other points i would make, chris, despite all of the
7:09 am
criticisms of that stimulus package which created millions of jobs when we desperately readed. i think that program worked and helped us get out of the worst part of the recession. >> what do we do next? i'm going to talk about the budget. we did hear for years that the republicans didn't pass the budget. this year they did pass the budget. of course, now, nothing happened how do the two sides come together, the two houses come together? are you throwing up your hands and saying, it's just not going to happen? >> i think it would be a good if they listened to what people want. what they said in poll after poll and in the last election is, yes, we've got to do some judicial cuts, but we also need to ask the wealthiest people in this country who are doing phenomenally well, the largest
7:10 am

7:11 am
and parties find ourselves right now. it's sort of the stalemate aversion. if you look at public polling, you no longer have the same level of anger that's going on with the government and economy as you had a couple of years ago. people do see some signs of home in terms of an economic turnaround, but people still don't feel like it's on the right track, that things are basically trending in the direction they need to be trending. so i don't think you're going to see them out there in 2014 campaigning that happy days are here again, but i do think you're going to hear them making argument that senator sanders just said, we'd be in a worse place. >> how would you make that argument? this comes as he's losing his economic council adviser alan krueger. he doesn't have to worry about
7:12 am
getting a job. he's not going to be campaigning this summer how does he make that move that he wants to make? >> alex's assessment was clear-headed and why there's this conundrum. the president is popular, but not so popular. that's why what happens in washington in terms of the election, there's not much of a change. you look at the glass half full. you look at numbers flashing across the excite, 7.5, and compare it to just a couple of years ago. you go to places like michigan and the auto industry and point to the folks who are getting their jobs back. you point to other folks who are beginning to hire, maybe not at the rates they once did or the salaries they wasn't did, but you say, hey, things are a whole lot worse, i inherited a mess.
