"first look" is up next. good thursday morning. right now on "first look," new details this morning out of philadelphia on that deadly building collapse. a major developing story. the obama administration, verizon and the national security agency carrying out what's believed to be a top-secret domestic surveillance program, collecting all daily call logs. some promising news for this 10-year-old in desperate need of a lung transplant. plus, tropical storm andrea gains strength. and two weeks after the $590 million powerball drawing, the 84-year-old winner finally comes forward. good morning, i'm mara schiavocampo. we start with breaking news out of philadelphia.

a dramatic rescue overnight. rescuers pulled a 61-year-old woman from the rubble of a collapsed building 13 hours after it came crashing down. six people were killed in that collapse. >> we pray that those who survived will recover not only physically but, certainly, mentally from the trauma of being in a building and it suddenly collapses. >> workers using buckets and their bare hands to move bricks rescued a total of 14 people. at least six are in the hospital with one in critical condition. >> we have seen superficial lacerations, abrasions, contusions, but they're still in the process of being evaluated. >> the collapsed building had been undergoing demolition. witnesses describe two loud explosions right before that collapse.

>> some people were panicking, really shaking real bad. >> none of them were able to walk. they were bruised, maybe some broken bones. >> many of the victims were in the salvation army thrift store next door when that building came crashing through. officials say the demolition company did have proper permits. an investigation is under way. news this morning of yet another classified government program. this time, private citizens are among the targets. london's "the guardian" newspaper reports the national security administration is secretly collecting records from verizon phone calls. nbc news has not independently confirmed that report. the secret foreign intelligence surveillance corps reportedly granted the order to the feds back in april but limited the time period to three months. in the ruling obtained by "the guardian," a judge directs a subsidiary of verizon communications to turn over call logs to the government on an ongoing, daily basis. it applies domestically as well as to calls taking place between

the u.s. and foreign nations but does not include actual conversations. the collection of communication logs is believed to be a major component of the bush administration's program of surveillance that took place without court orders. it comes as the obama administration is already facing a furor over its aggressive tactics in investigation of government leaks. the white house has not commented on that report. now to immigration reform. bipartisan legislation is expected to hit the senate floor next week. a new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll finds a slight majority support it, but not necessarily right now. all of this as one of the house bipartisan immigration group's gang of eight steps down. nbc news's tracie potts is in washington with all the details. tracie, good morning. >> hi, mara. good morning, everyone. while this effort may not be completely falling apart, there are some here on capitol hill who now think it may be losing steam. >> i don't think there's even a chance that comprehensive immigration will pass. >> reporter: lawmakers sound

less optimistic today about immigration reform than they did a month ago. >> let's bring these people out of the shadows. >> reporter: that was senate yormarko rubio just after the gang of eight democrats and republicans announced the deal to put 11 million illegal immigrants on a path to citizenship. now, rubio says the bill he helped create can't pass the republican-controlled house. >> and i think it's going to struggle to pass in the senate. >> reporter: the senate takes up immigration next week, but rubio says unless lawmakers toughen up border patrols, they may not get 60 votes. the white house realizes another of president obama's key initiatives may be in jeopardy. >> his work is far from done. >> reporter: one house republican sounded optimistic. >> i think we're going to be successful. i think we are going to have immigration reform. >> reporter: but then he dropped out of the compromise group, promising to pitch his own plan. the pressure is on. republicans need latino votes and latinos are counting on president obama to reward their support.

>> he had promised us that he was going to give us reform, but he didn't. >> reporter: now, our nbc/"wall street journal" poll found the public support to immigration reform by 52%. mara? >> tracie potts, thank you very much for that. a little girl in desperate need of a lung transplant has new hope this morning. you can see 10-year-old sarah murnaghan celebrating in her hospital room, and she certainly has reason to. on wednesday, a federal judge temporarily granted her family's request to give her an opportunity to apply for a space on a transplant list. current rules allow only patients 12 and older to receive lungs from adult donors. health and human services secretary kathleen sebelius had originally refused to intervene. well, the biggest single lottery winner in u.s. history is finally revealed. 84-year-old gloria mackenzie claimed her lump sum of $370 million in winnings on wednesday, flanked by her lawyers and a financial adviser.

mackenzie released a statement, saying she bought her winning ticket after a kind lottery player let her go ahead of them in line. while mackenzie currently lives in a complex across from a cow pasture, her neighbors don't think she'll be there much longer. now here's your "first look" at this morning's "dish of scrambled politics." new audio this morning after first lady michelle obama had a run-in with a woman during a private fund-raiser. here's how the first lady responded when the heckler got in her face. >> we have an obligation to stand up to those kids, and i don't care what you believe in, we don't -- wait, wait, wait -- one of the things that i don't do well is this. do you understand? carney said he thought she handled the situation brilliantly. the recent report on the collection of phone records paired with the justice department's seizure of "ap" records has one former leader riled up. former vp al gore tweeted, "in digital era, privacy must be a priority. is it just me or is secret blanket surveillance obscenely outrageous?" he then linked to "the guardian" article on nsa phone records. vice president joe biden was very joe biden at wednesday's funeral for senator frank lautenberg. he eulogized the late senator in a way that only joe could. >> my wife says i'm the most obnoxious grandfather in the world. no, wrong. frank was the most obnoxious. >> he needs his own show, that guy. well, former president bill clinton was among the dignitaries attending a memorial service for met garr evers, the slain civil rights hero.

he joined her wife in commemorating his death. governor martinez is downplaying a run for the white house. the first hispanic governor says she plans to stick around and set an example for the young girls who look after her. actress carey mulligan is reportedly the front-runner to play a young hillary clinton in an upcoming bi-yoppic. "the hollywood reporter" says producers prefer her over scarlett johansson and reese witherspoon. and that's your morning dish of "scrambled politics." >> any of them. >> any of them would play a great hillary. >> the other two you know, like when you look at them. you see scarlett johansson, you know scarlett johansson. >> she's an up-and-coming. the first storm of the atlantic hurricane season is andrea, and it's headed toward the north florida coast this morning, bringing heavy wind and rain? >> it developed yesterday, we thought it had a chance to do it, and we just got the new advisory from the national hurricane center and it's stronger now. 60-mile-per-hour winds. not enough really to do a lot of wind damage out there, but just

the fact that it intensified a little bit definitely piques your interest. pressure drops a bit and it's headed to the north-northeast at 13 miles per hour. it's about 200 miles west of tampa, florida, right now. as the storm moves to the north, notice the clouds. there's hardly any on the west side. from mobile, alabama, to new orleans, little effect from the storm, besides the rip current at the beaches, but east of the storm, you have to worry about the rain, gusty winds, a little storm surge and also the potential of a tornado. there is a tornado watch out for orlando, tampa, down to south florida today with winds gusting probably 20 to 40 miles per hour with some of the worst of the storms, and this storm is going to fly up the east coast. by this time tomorrow morning, it will be somewhere near savannah, georgia. by friday afternoon, it's somewhere over the virginia/north carolina border, and then by saturday morning, it's right over pretty much atlantic city, new jersey. so on this track, it will bring heavy rain up the east coast. not worried about coastal flooding or anything like that, but it's going to be a soaker when it's over your area for at

reporters' phone records at the "associated press." plan b contraceptives could soon be available over the counter and to anyone who wants them. a federal court went against the white house who restricted the drug to those 15 and older. and connecticut's governor signed legislation wednesday banning the public release of crime scene photos from the newtown shooting. the law also seals video evidence from inside sandy hook elementary. now for your "first look" at business. we turn to cnbc's hampton pearson. hampton, good morning. >> hi, mara. first of all, we've got a takeover deal with some real fizz which may be in the works. reports say pepsico is in talks to buy sodastream, whose machines turn tap water into carbonated drinks, for $2 billion. sodastream is also checking whether coke might be interested. microsoft and the fbi are working together to launch an assault on one of the world's biggest cyber crime rings. the group is believed to have stolen more than $500 million from bank accounts over the past

well, it's time for sports, and for the latest headlines, i'm joined by my colleague, alex witt. alex, good morning. >> a very good morning to you. let's get to sports. a moment to cherish. officer dick donohue was chosen to serve as the bruins' honorary banner captain. his artery was severed when he was shot in the gun fight with the boston marathon bombers. the bruins honored their hero in pretty good fashion, scoring two minutes into the game which went into double overtime. the bruins get the win and a commanding 3-0 series lead. in the french open, novak djokovic and rafael nadal went in straight sets to set up a semifinal showdown between two of tennis's best. on the women's side, maria sharapova came from a set down to beat jelena jankovic and will face two-time australian open champion victoria azarenka in the semis. president obama welcomed the super bowl champion baltimore ravens to the white house yesterday and provided some inspiration for next season.

locations, death tolls, alleged terrorist affiliations, but they also reveal what u.s. officials don't know, like how many killed. between seven and ten in one strike, 20 to 22 in another. u.s. officials do seem certain they almost never kill civilians. in those 114 strikes, only one acknowledged civilian casualty. >> they want to maintain the myth that civilians are not harmed with drone strikes, which is simply implausible. >> reporter: what's more, about a quarter of those killed are described generically as "other militants." it suggests u.s. officials don't always know exactly how many or who they're killing, sometimes targeting suspects based on what's called a signature terrorist profile -- where they live, who they meet, who they talk to. >> that was nbc's richard engel reporting. well, it's time now for our "first look" at politics today. joining me, syndicated columnist bob franken.

bob, good morning. thanks for being here. >> good morning. >> let's start with this new report about the obama administration collecting call logs from private citizens. what effect do you think this will have on the white house, especially given all the other scandals that they're currently dealing with? >> well, i think that it's just going to reinforce some of the uproar over some of the tactics that have been used in the name of national security. you have an attorney general, for instance, who's under fire, and by complicitly, the president, because of the tactics that have been used. so, i think this is causing this issue to do more than just percolate. >> you mentioned the attorney general, and he told nbc news in an exclusive interview that he will not be stepping down, but do you think that he has the full support of the white house at this point, and has he been too badly damaged to continue on for too much longer? >> well, the second part is hard to answer, but clearly, he has the support of the president, a longtime friend. and after all, some of the controversy around him has to do with things that, clearly, the president supports. i'm talking about those, what people call sometimes a

heavy-handed approach to national security. >> and someone else that the president clearly supports is susan rice. yesterday, president obama appointed her as national security adviser. of course, now we know that she had nothing to do with those benghazi talking points that she got so much flack over, but is benghazi going to continue to haunt her or will she finally be able to move forward and do her job? >> well, i suspect that she's going to be able to move forward, simply because the president has said that he has her back. what's going to be interesting is to see if her style fits a job that is really supposed to be about bringing people together. she is not known as somebody who's always somebody who does that. >> and you know, we have this new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll that just came out. it shows that the president was pretty much unscathed by all of those controversies. so, what does that tell us about him and his political power? >> well, what seems to be happening is he's finally, in the minds of many of his supporters, finally saying, okay, republicans, you're going to not do anything to support anything that i'm going to go after, so i'm going to stand on some principles. it's interesting to see what seems to be a transition, as we

bit less. this is "way too early." our promise to you is we're going to try not to stink today. really setting a high bar here on "way too early." good morning, everybody, i'm brian shactman. it is thursday, june 6th. breaking news out of philadelphia. an update on the death toll from that building collapse. 6 people are dead, another 14 hurt after the structure unexpectedly came down yesterday. it's a four-story building actually in the process of being demolished, but a thrift shop next door was open for business. rescuers literally using buckets and their bare hands to remove rubble in a search-and-rescue operation that could last through this morning. those rescue workers did have some success, we can tell you. here's some new video of a survivor being pulled out. 61-year-old myra plekam is from philadelphia. she's currently listed in
