monday, the fbi searched a field in suburban detroit for the remains of teamster leader, jimmy hoffa. prosecutors issued a search warrant about 25 miles from detroit. >> it's my fondest hope that we can give that closure not just to the hoffa family, but also to the community, stop tearing that scab off with every new lead and bring some conclusion. >> this latest search was launched after official reportedly received a tip from aging mobster tony zarilli. those zarilli says he was not involved in the teamster's disappearance, he claims he was told about it by a mobster leader. he claims he knows how he died. officials say they plan to resume their search today. hoffa disappeared july 30th, 1975. the fbi says a man who caused a major disturbance on a

flight from hong kong to newark liberty airport monday is being given a psychiatric evaluation. passengers says he claimed everybody on board was being poisoned. one person recorded the event which was about everything from chinese spies to edward snowden. >> your life is in jeopardy, your life is in jeopardy, too, if you work for the nsa, if you work for the cia, if you work for the national security agency. your life's in jeopardy. you will not get a trial by jury. >> there's no word on whether the man will face any charges. president obama is defending his administration's handling of the syrian civil war. the president's first comments come following friday's announcement regarding the aid of weapons after bashar al assad's crossing of the red line. >> this argument that somehow if

we had gone in earlier or heavier in some fashion, that the tragedy and chaos taking place in syria wouldn't be taking place i think is wrong. >> a new pugh research poll finds 70% are against the u.s. and its allies sending arms and military supplies to anti-government groups in syria, 20% are in favor. nearly two-thirds say the u.s. is overcommitted to get involved in another conflict. syria is expected to take center stage at this week's g-8 summit. while they support opposing sides in the conflict, they agree that the civil war must come to an end. nbc news chief correspondent chuck todd joins us live from ireland. chuck, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marra. in fact, the two leaders of the former cold war super powers took pains to look like they get along. they tried to have a better body

language for the tv cameras as they were escorted in than they did a few months ago when the two met and seemed to have a contentious disagreement over what to do about syria. yesterday what the president took pains to emphasize to president putin behind the scenes was that the united states' interest here was not in shoving out the entire assad regime of syria, just assad himself. they would love the other parts of the regime at the negotiating table. it was an attempt to reassure the russians that that is what the motives are of the united states and that language, at least talking to senior aids behind the scenes, they feel like may have helped putin dial back the rhetoric that he had used just a day before in london. in fact, here's what he said while sitting next to the president. >> our opinions do not coincide and all of us have the intention to stop the violence in syria,

and to solve the situation peacefully. >> reporter: so they agree to disagree on which side they're on but they agree to push for some sort of political settlement to take place in geneva. it's a promise they both made before. we'll see if it actually happens. marra. >> chuck todd live in ireland. thanks, chuck as the g-8 summit continues, a new claim from the self-identified nsa leaker edward snowden who says u.s. and british intelligence eavesdropped on world leaders at a previous meeting. andrea mitchell reports. >> reporter: as the g-8 summit opened, the guardian reported that the british with american help had spied on past summits, intercepting e-mails and phone calls at a london summit in 2009. one target, russia's then president medvedev encrypted calls home to moscow. >> what it does do for president

demonstrators threw rocks at police and set fire to cars and government buildings. in northern mexico, at least here's your first dish of politics. snowden answered questions during an online chat monday and said that former vice president dick cheney calling him a traitor is a mark of pride and that, quote, it's the highest honor you can give an american. one of the miss u.s.a. pageant contestants was asked about the snowden claims. >> i think the society that we live in today it's sad that if we go to the movies or to the airport or even to the mall that we have to worry about our safety. i would rather someone track my telephone messages and feel safe wherever i go and feel like they're encroaching on my privacy. voting rights groups are applauding the supreme court's ruling that says that arizona cannot demand proof of

citizenship from people voting. former illinois congressman jesse jackson jr. will be sentenced july 3rd for looting his campaign treasury of about $750,000. jackson's lawyers asked the court to send him to prison first if he and his wife sandy get time behind bars and that's the morning dish of scrambled politics. in northern mexico, at least one person has died due to excessive rain throughout the weekend and monday. they've received over 17 inches of rain, about 60% of the region's annual rainfall. it has cautioned at least $30 million in damage and has left at least 40 million people homeless. more rain is expected for the region. and now for a look at the weather closer to home, nbc's bill karins is here. >> here in the lower 48 we're doing all right.

nothing too bad. if you're driving on interstate 20 this morning, be prepared for some heavy downpours. that will eventually include the atlanta area. probably around 6:00 a.m. is when i'm going to target the storms to arrive in the atlanta area. 620, in the birmingham area. slide further to the west, shreveport just dodged these storms. it's pouring on interstate 20 almost across the entire stretch louisiana and our friends in fort worth, it's a 4:00 "a.m. wakeup call" for you. a large thunderstorm with torrential rain and heavy downpours now approaching the downtown fort worth area. that should move towards dallas during the rush hour as we go throughout the morning hours. maybe a little bit before the rush hour. that's where the heaviest rain is going to be. that's where the humidity is highest. downpours pretty much all day today from atlanta, dallas, even up the eastern seaboard. not bad severe flooding, just downpours. >> unpleasant. >> yeah. send you indoors. >> thanks so much, bill. today the pentagon will

here are some stories making news. chuck hagel is set to announce new roles for women in the military. women could begin training as army rangers by 2015 and navy s.e.a.l.s a year later. the owners of 7-eleven stores have been charged with fraud, identity theft and concealing undocumented workers. conditions for those employees were like a, quote, modern day plantation system dating back as far as 2000 new research says cheating yourself of a full night sleep can have long-term downsides. it can put you at risk for short life expectancy as well as heart and kidney complications.

gleason, diagnosed with als in 2011 is confined to a wheelchair and has lost his ability to speak. the radio hosts set up a skit where they pretended they were interviewing gleason. they set up a fake caller with a robotic voice. they went on to discuss whether glee s gleason would be alive by next week. the host then went on to discuss whether gleason would be alive by next week. >> terrible. >> yes. terrible. the hosts have since released an apology. to baseball now, one fan attempted to get a foul ball, but ended up getting stucks in the seats. after much embarrassment, the fan was given the ball and able to laugh it off. the fun and games go awry when a girl elbows an innocent bystander. the little boy is crying because his cool aid spilled all over him. >> all fun and games until someone spills their cool aid. >> too late. then it's over. thanks too much. it's time now to dig a little

deeper into some of our topo lit call stories. david, thanks for being here. >> thanks for having me. >> president obama's approval rating is at 45%. that's down eight points in a month. why is he taking such a hit now? >> his administration has been rocked by a number of these controversies, from the nsa scandal to the i.r.s. scandal that his administration has said they'll make changes in that agency. i think that's driving a lot of it. the inability to talk about his policy. the gun control legislation went nowhere in congress and also the budget talks are tied up. so i think that the people are frustrated right now. it's kind of amazing how quickly that's turned since his re-election. >> let's stick with the poll numbers. pew survey says 54% of people think the feds should file criminal charges. it seems like there's a

disconnect there. what's going on? >> probably. i think that even though the public understands the administration argument to some extent that they have to keep the country safe, i think there's probably concern that these are national security secrets, you have sort of a lower level employee who's just a contractor who's sort of being able to leak this and then leave the country and even do an online chat yesterday with sort of impunity yesterday. i think there's people who feel he should be brought to justice but it is a complicated issue. i still don't think everybody knows all the answers exactly what's going on. that's public opinion. >> david nakamura, washington post, thanks for being here. coming up, bill karins and betty nguyen will be here for our first buzz. that's coming up next.
