good morning. i'm mara schiavocampo. at times, contentious fourth day of testimony during the george zimmerman murder trial thursday. the defense challenging a key state witness about what she heard and what she said to jurors about her phone call with trayvon martin just minutes before he was killed. nbc's jay gray has the details from sanford, florida. >> reporter: the legal sparring continues between attorney don west and the state's key witness, 19-year-old rachel jeantel. who's told the jury she heard part of a confrontation between george zimmerman and trayvon martin during a phone call minutes before he died. >> the defense strategy was to keep her on the stand, show some inconsistencies, just create doubt about whether this witness' testimony is enough to put a man in jail potentially for the rest of his life. >> reporter: west tried to point out what the defense called inconsistencies in statements she's made about her conversation with martin and questioned what happened when the phone was disconnected during the struggle with zimmerman. >> but you thought it was just a

fight because it was one you knew that trayvon martin was planning to start? >> no, sir. he would have told me, sir. he told me to call him back or he'll call me back, sir. >> reporter: another call at the center of this case was played for jurors. >> so you think he's yelling help? >> yes. >> what is your phone number? >> just -- there's gunshots. >> reporter: jenna lauer made that 911 call when she heard a scuffle behind her townhome. while she was able to clearly make out the screams she told the jury it was not clear whether it was martin or zimmerman yelling for help that night. jay gray, nbc news, sanford, florida. moving to washington now where the senate has approved the most significant overhaul of the nation's immigration laws in a generation, and it did so with bipartisan support. the vote was met with chants of

"yes, we can" as vice president biden announced final results. 14 republicans joined all democrats and independents for a 68-32 vote in what's become an all too commonly polarized senate. the massive legislation cobbles together priorities for both parties, it includes a 13-year path to citizenship for some 11 million undocumented immigrants and a major boost in funding for border security. the bill now moves to the house where it faces uncertainty. republicans there said they plan to write their own legislation. nbc has learned that the former second ranking highest officer in the military is now the target of an investigation into the leak of a top secret government project called the stuxnet virus. it wormed its way into the computers that control iran's nuclear program. but the leak of this existence caused damage of its own. nbc's national investigative correspondent michael isikoff reveals the target is james cartwright and issy cough has the details.

>> reporter: general cartwright was a key member of president obama's inner circle of national security advisors but legal sources tell nbc news that cartwright has been notified he's the target of a justice department criminal investigation into a highly sensitive leak about a covert u.s. cyber attack on iran's nuclear program. >> my attitude has been zero tolerance for these kinds of leaks. these are criminal acts when they release information like this. >> reporter: "the new york times" last year broke the story that president obama secretly ordered a stepped up cyber weapon attack using a malicious computer virus known as stuxnet and that cartwright conceived and oversaw the special operation from the pentagon. >> we're trying to build a second cyber force right now. >> reporter: cartwright did not respond to requests for comment from nbc news. contacted today his lawyer former white house obama counsel greg said i have no comment.

including its code name olympic games, the cooperation of israeli intelligence and its success in disabling nearly 1,000 iranian centrifuges to enrich uranium. >> this leak was very damaging. clearly what was going on here was a method and it should have been protected. and i think it's had devastating consequences. >> reporter: the legal sources said the fbi originally focused whether the stuxnet leak came from the white house. but late last year agents started focusing in on cartwright who retired in 2011. the motives of whoever leaked remains a mystery. >> there are many reasons why people leak classified information. sometimes it's to attack a program. sometimes it's to defend it. many times we just never know. nbc's michael issy cough reporting. justice department officials declined to comment on any aspect of the case. legal sources tell nbc news federal prosecutors have developed their case without subpoenaing the phone regards

simmons joins us live outside the hospital in pretoria. >> good morning, mara. president obama is expected here in south africa this evening. whether or not he will come here to the hospital where nelson mandela is still critically ill is an open question. the two men have met before back in 2005 when president obama was a senator, but they have never met while president obama was actually president. the question, though, is whether or not it would be appropriate. nelson mandela's family seem open to the idea but say it would be up to doctors to decide whether it was okay. meanwhile, the news that nelson mandela is a little better, meant people were very happy here in the streets yesterday. around 1,000 people singing and dancing in the streets, but he is still described as critically ill in the hospital behind me. >> all right. keir simmons in pretoria, south africa, thanks so much. other stories making headlines. the surviving suspect in the

this go farther. it's going to be interesting to watch, but i think it's going to be a completely different fight. we'll see what happens. >> now when it comes to immigration reform, a lot of the political incentive has to do with preserving the latino vote. from a pr perspective as things stand right now, which side of the aisle looks better in the fight? >> that's, you know, who looks better i think that's a tough question, but i will say i think senator marco rubio, he was one of the leading voices for the republicans on getting this bill passed in the senate and the fact that he was able to do that speaks well to him and his chances moving forward as a national figure ahead of 2016. >> there is speculation that rubio is losing a little bit of tea party support because of his public role in the immigration fight. do you think that will cost him his base? >> that's a good point. he has to walk this fine line of being able to appeal to independents in the middle, but he's in the tricky spot because as you mentioned is -- has a lot of the base does not like this bill at all. >> and quickly, kevin, it's
