good morning. i'm mara schiavocampo. at times, contentious fourth day of testimony during the george zimmerman murder trial thursday. the defense challenging a key state witness about what she heard and what she said to jurors about her phone call with trayvon martin just minutes before he was killed. nbc's jay gray has the details from sanford, florida. >> reporter: the legal sparring continues between attorney don west and the state's key witness, 19-year-old rachel jeantel. who's told the jury she heard part of a confrontation between george zimmerman and trayvon martin during a phone call minutes before he died. >> the defense strategy was to keep her on the stand, show some inconsistencies, just create doubt about whether this witness' testimony is enough to put a man in jail potentially for the rest of his life. >> reporter: west tried to point out what the defense called inconsistencies in statements she's made about her conversation with martin and questioned what happened when the phone was disconnected during the struggle with zimmerman. >> but you thought it was just a

fight because it was one you knew that trayvon martin was planning to start? >> no, sir. he would have told me, sir. he told me to call him back or he'll call me back, sir. >> reporter: another call at the center of this case was played for jurors. >> so you think he's yelling help? >> yes. >> what is your phone number? >> just -- there's gunshots. >> reporter: jenna lauer made that 911 call when she heard a scuffle behind her townhome. while she was able to clearly make out the screams she told the jury it was not clear whether it was martin or zimmerman yelling for help that night. jay gray, nbc news, sanford, florida. moving to washington now where the senate has approved the most significant overhaul of the nation's immigration laws in a generation, and it did so with bipartisan support. the vote was met with chants of

"yes, we can" as vice president biden announced final results. 14 republicans joined all democrats and independents for a 68-32 vote in what's become an all too commonly polarized senate. the massive legislation cobbles together priorities for both parties, it includes a 13-year path to citizenship for some 11 million undocumented immigrants and a major boost in funding for border security. the bill now moves to the house where it faces uncertainty. republicans there said they plan to write their own legislation. nbc has learned that the former second ranking highest officer in the military is now the target of an investigation into the leak of a top secret government project called the stuxnet virus. it wormed its way into the computers that control iran's nuclear program. but the leak of this existence caused damage of its own. nbc's national investigative correspondent michael isikoff reveals the target is james cartwright and issy cough has the details.

>> reporter: general cartwright was a key member of president obama's inner circle of national security advisors but legal sources tell nbc news that cartwright has been notified he's the target of a justice department criminal investigation into a highly sensitive leak about a covert u.s. cyber attack on iran's nuclear program. >> my attitude has been zero tolerance for these kinds of leaks. these are criminal acts when they release information like this. >> reporter: "the new york times" last year broke the story that president obama secretly ordered a stepped up cyber weapon attack using a malicious computer virus known as stuxnet and that cartwright conceived and oversaw the special operation from the pentagon. >> we're trying to build a second cyber force right now. >> reporter: cartwright did not respond to requests for comment from nbc news. contacted today his lawyer former white house obama counsel greg said i have no comment.
