a helicopter losing power, landing in a river, and everybody survives. this is "way too early." good morning, everybody. on this monday, july 1st. we often talk about wildfires and the images they're always compelling for us in tvland. but the story that broke overnight, just a little different. fires have left 19 firefighters dead, the single deadliest event for firefighters since september 11th. the victims were part of a hot shot crew, an elite team sent in to some of the worst fires with heavy gear. they were fighting a fire 80 miles northwest of phoenix. the fire itself started on friday, believed to be sparked by a lightning strike. the weather conditions were said to be unpredictable with fierce

winds and dry conditions. according to authorities, the crew was trying to pop fire shelters, essentially tents that are designed to keep them safe as a last resort when conditions become catastrophic. and the threat continues with the fire 0% contained. and 500 homes destroyed. >> we heard about the fire earlier. we were out there visiting. and heard that pecos valley was on fire. got over there. there were fire trucks everywhere. fire and smoke. couldn't see anything. so, hurried up and went to the house and grabbed what we could. >> we got if dogs. we got the wife. it's gone. the house was on fire when we left. everything was there. but it was on fire. so, it's gone. >> hundreds more firefighters are said to be on the way later

today. things are incredibly hot out west. they're breaking records. and not helping these fires is that hot weather. let's check in with todd santos with that latest on that part of the country. >> it's a devastating story, specially when you involve not that big of a fire with homes. the heat, we're talking about some of the areas, especially just to the west and north. talking about the excessive heat warnings for the fire area. you can be talking about winds. we could see a pop-up shower or thunderstorms. that could drive the winds in the 30-mile-per-hour range. vegas, close to the all-time record for las vegas. 117 is the forecast from today. that would tie it. still some showers across the southwest right now. a lot of those are starting to fall apart. get some daytime heating. northeast corridor some showers. northwest jersey, eastern pennsylvania. pockets of moderate rain. this afternoon, we'll see a

chance for airline disruptions. one year after egyptians chose mohamed morsi as their president, hundreds of thousands of protesters are calling for him to resign. the demonstrations have been massive, appearing larger than the ones that overthrew former president hosni mubarak two years ago. we go to cairo. good day. >> reporter: good morning, brian. you're right. by the numbers, not only in cairo, but all across egypt, millions of egyptians took to the street to mark that one-year anniversary. they have been for the past two months collecting signatures of more than 22 million egyptians, calling on president mohamed morsi to step down. yesterday, they came out in force to really begin with what they are a acts of civil disobedience to get the president to resign. late last night, a presidential spokesperson said they're willing to have negotiations

with the opposition on the way forward. but right now, there's no reason for him to step down. he is the democratically elected president of the country. still has a large mandate. but against that backdrop, egypt remains tense. a calm settling in cairo and other cities. the death toll from yesterday's protests, according to the ministry of health now is at 60. that number could rise in the coming hours. hundreds more have been injured. on the political front, the two sides could not be further apart. for now, organizers say they will give president morsi until tuesday to meet their demands, if he does not do so, they will continue acts of civil disobedience. but morsi insists he will remain in power. >> be safe. we'll talk to you later in the morning. even though edward snowden is living in limbo in the moscow airport, he is making major

"der spiegel" reports that the nsa bugged european union offices, accessed e.u. computer networks. and the top delegation. the top officials demanded an explanation from washington. snowden is on asylum from ecuador. but his chances of going there may be smaller. over the weekend, that country's president revealed that vice president biden phoned him, politely asking he reject snowden's request. it is moscow that determines if snowden can leave, as russian officials distance himself from his fate. his passport for the u.s. has been revoked. he has been backed by wikileaks. and julian assange call his pursuit a disgrace.

senators mccain and schumer spoke about the bill's chances of finding its way to the president's desk. >> there's always friction between the house and the senate. a lot of it understandable. a lot of it just egos. but i respect the house of representatives. i respect their views. and we have a job ahead of us. and convincing them. >> national republican leadership will tell john boehner, if you don't pass a bill, then we're going to be a minority party for a generation. and he's not only the house leader, he's a party leader. speaker boehner will find two choices. no bill, or let the bill pass with some chamber republicans. we'll find that the better choice. we'll pass the bill by the end of the year. texas lawmakers will begin another 30-day special session. they will take up the state's abortion bill that could close nearly all of the state's

clinics and prohibit abortions after 20 weeks. it is the same bill that was challenged by wendy davis. the filibuster has kicked off a national debate on this issue. you look at images from their statehouse last week. as well as a personal battle between davis and rick perry. yesterday, davis spoke about the upcoming special session. >> what they now have to confront is that the eyes of texas, the eyes of the country, are watching. and they are going to be held accountable for the decisions that they make in this process. and if people continue to see that their voices are being ignored, i think we're going to see a long-term, sustained response to that in the state of texas. politicians are using this issue to boost their own political aspirations. their own political ambitions. and they're bullying women and their liberties, their

constitutional guaranteed liberties in the process. most of us know cirque du soleil, known for acrobatics. over the weekend, an aerialist lost control and plunged to the hour. it happened at the show ka at the mgm on saturday. the acrobat had been dangling from a catwalk that was hidden above the stage, when she went into a freefall. her death is start to be the first in the company's three-decade history. a lighter note here. new york city, a helicopter belonging to a charter company made an emergency landing on the hudson river after losing power to its engine. the helicopter touched down in the water yesterday before noon. several boaters in the area jumped into action, assisting in the recovery efforts. the pilot and all four passengers who were tourists from sweden were unharmed. great job of piloting. now, to business. investors looking to kick off july on a better note than they
