july holiday. it's 11:00 a.m. on the east coast. great to have you here. we start with the new beginning in egypt with the new acting head of state. was this a victory for democracy or mob rule? there are new questions about dna and the george zimmerman trial. does that help or hurt his self-defense claim? and they are a staple of any fourth of july celebration. before you head out to the fireworks we have to tell you about something first. major policy questions for the white house in . after meeting with his national security team in the situation room president obama issued a statement last night saying the u.s. doesn't support particular parties but rather the democratic process. joining me now is peter alexand alexander. how is the white house interpreting this? they don't want to send the wrong message that this was a military coup, especially since democracy is in the.
8:01 am
>> reporter: the white house says it is not explicitly supporting the removal of morsi from power but trying to use the statement it put out to put pressure on the egyptian military. the president said he was deeply concerned, to use his language, by the egyptian military's removal of mor see and the suspension of the constitution in that country right now. what's significant is we focus on the fact that the word coup they can't use. it would have legal ramifications that would force the u.s. to cut off aid to egypt. more than $1.5 billion worth. now the u.s. is hoping to contain the situation that exists in that country. at the same time it's trying to put pressure on the military leaders and the acting leader to keep with the pledge that there would be parliamentary and
8:02 am
presidential elections soon. so it could be a short transition period. they are using the same language they used basically to morsi a couple days ago urging restraint during the protests to say that to the members of the military that they use restraint as well in their treatment of the muslim brotherhood that's now out of power. >> what do we know about the communication, if any, between this new interim government and the white house? >> it's a good question. we don't know if there is new conversation between the acting leader right now in egypt and the leadership here of the u.s. a number of -- the president spoke to former president morsi a few days ago. as things evolved over the last several days it was the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, general dempsey having conversations with his counterpart in egypt as well as secretary of defense chuck hagel who spoke more than once with his counterpart in egypt as
8:03 am
well. the relationships between the u.s. have been much closer to the military leadership in egypt than to the civilian government for years. >> peter alexander reporting at the white house. thank you very much. the crowds returned to tahrir square following a celebration to mark the removal of president morsi. we have the latest from cairo on that. the people have been heard. the reaction has been sent in and of itself. there is a pivot point between knowing what they got rid of and knowing what they get next. >> absolutely. that will be an important question in the coming hours. one of the things people are looking at now and especially since the ouster of president morsi, how the government is reacting. we are talking mostly about the security services and the law enforcement services. right now in the last couple of hours there have been quick developments. that includes a travel ban that
8:04 am
has been imposed on former president morsi and other officials as a result of an on going investigation that's been opened by a cairo prosecutor. at the same time two senior memberses including the leader of the muslim brotherhood and his deputy have an arrest war rent out for them as a result of an investigation being launched into the killing of protesters outside the headquarters of the muslim brotherhood on oh sunday. these are rapid developments happening in cairo that will give human rights activists and dm si activists and people in the opposition a moment of pause and concern. some called it a crack down on the muslim brotherhood or islamists. that will set the tone as to what kind of government is taking place. will this be a return to authoritarian rule. will there be revenge or is it a matter of law and order that will be resolved in the coming days? because of the tension, the political uncertainty the
8:05 am
supporters of the former president, supporterses of the muslim brotherhood feel they are being targeted by the police, by the judiciary and other law enforcement officials making the situation here tense. >> what do we know, if anything, about whether or not morsi will go the way of life of leisure, sheikh style or end up like mubarak, behind bars? >> reporter: there are those in the opposition -- and i mean the protesters and those organization who called on the judiciary to try president morsi. to try the former president. they have accused him of insightment, of killing protesters. they certainly want him brought to justice. that's the demand of the protesters. no indication yet from the officials, the military which at this point is responsible for the whereabouts and the condition and safety of the former president. there is no indication yet from the military that there are legal proceedings against him.
8:06 am
we do know a cairo prosecutor within his jurisdiction, of course, has now begun an investigation into the former president, other senior members of the muslim brotherhood. there could be charges not only against the former president but other senior leaders. the question is whether the charges are going to be politicized or is it a matter of law and order. it's too early to tell what will happen to the formerer president. the military itself has not made public comments about the whereabouts of the president and whether he'll be released soon. >> thank you, sir. i appreciate it. joining the conversation is ambassador dennis ross, former special assistant to president obama, counselor with the washington institute for near east policy and nbc news mideast glenmore si. as we get meta on this and pull back is this a victory for democracy in egypt or a victory for mob rule?
8:07 am
i do think vast segments of the public feel not only were they trying to control everything but they were inseptember in terms of addressing israel's problems. >> was this a bait and switch, sir? the muslim brotherhood is well known throughout egypt. well known for what it stands for. yet this is to the egyptian
8:08 am
people elected. did morsi bait and switch the egyptian people or did they get exactly what they voted for? >> you know, i think again go back. the people who are celebrating last night, many were the same people celebrated when he was elected last year. >> mm-hmm. >> there is an expectation that the muslim brotherhood, having declared themselves to join with others in governing and to be inclusive, there was a sense they were taking it back. the real question is there going to be a political transition? is it going to be shaped by the writing of a new constitution. is there going to be an approach to governance that will be inclusive and the sharing of power. if the those thingses emerge and
8:09 am
it needs to include the muslim brotherhood they are a social force that can't be excluded. if things emerge that way the answer to your first question would be this could be a favorable move for the development of democracy over time. we shouldn't kid ourselves. you had 40 years of authoritarian rule. when it disappears it createses a vacuum. in this case the muslim brotherhood which was the most organized force within egypt came to fill the gap. can it be filled by new political forces. >> because they were ruling under president morsi and the way they are talking about redrafting the constitution, throwing everyone out of parliaments what is the second tier style party or third tier style party they aring looking to emerge through the center. >> that's an excellent question.
8:10 am
part of the problem with what we have seen in the opposition is there is no coherence, identity, agenda, common agenda. there isn't, in fact, any clear political party that at this point is able to organize itself and capture the imagination. we have seen the ability to throw people out of power. we haven't seen the ability to govern in a way that will be inclusive. the question is can an interim administration that is made of up technocrats shape a more technical approach to governance. can the drafting of a new constitution help to create a rule of law. can there be a date established now for elections so everyone understands the time frame in which they are operating. if the military is in the background helping to ensure that, this will be a course correction. if that's not the case we'll see instability go on for a long time. the one big question at this point is does the muslim brotherhood resort tole violence
8:11 am
in response to what's happened to them? i think that's a big question and i think it is way too soon to answer that one. >> what do you think it sends the message outside the borders of egypt, the ripple effect to other countries seeking to emerge out of authoritarian rule into a democracy. is this a blow to their hope and spirits of effecting that style of change? >> it certainly is a cautionary note at a minimum. two points to keep in mind. first it is a blow to the muslim brotherhood and islamists. they proved to be ineffective terms of oh governance. for those who thought the muslim brotherhood was the wave of the future in the middle east that's not the case. the question is whether or not one can establish new governments that don't have to be so responsive to the mood of the street that they lose the ability to govern. that's a big question mark right now. >> ambassador ross, thank you

zimmerman trial in florida where the state may be close to wrapping up the case. court is in session for the fourth of july holiday. on wednesday jurors heard testimony from zimmerman's former college professors about classeses he took on florida's self-defense and stand your ground laws as well as evidence about his application to the prince william county virginia police department. joining us now from miami is former u.s. attorney kendall coffee and former prosecutor kenda kendall paul henderson. do you think the state did a good job proving the case so far? >> i think they have done a good job. putting in as much evidence as they can to get the jury to understand what zimmerman was saying about the night in question. we have seen a lot of witnesses with different variationses of the story. talk about pressure.

evidence and hearing that his dna wasn't on the gun and the hollist holster and we have the injuries from zimmerman that were not life threatening and were not egregious. it starts casting his story into doubt. i'm happy at this point in the trial we are starting to go against zimmerman's version of the story. you see the defense working hard and challenging the accreditation and academics and procedures to collect the dna oh. they just want to throw as much stuff in as possible to cast doubt as to the scientific proof that this was not the version of events zimmerman is trying to sell to the jury. that's also important because we just don't know if zimmerman will take the stand.
