only area trauma center. they are sending out hourly updates. they are receiving patients in what they are describing as waves and the first one came at about 12:30 local time today. ten patients, and they are all critical. mostly korean speakers so the hospital has brought in interpreters to work with the patients and familie familiar e arrived as well. the second wave. 17 patients. range from critical to good. they are being assessed and we are told these patients are mostly english speakers. the third wave is expected but has not yet arrived. they are anticipating more people to come, less injured people, if you will. this order to increase capacity san francisco general has set up tents outside of its e.r. and called in extra people to the hospital to accommodate anybody who arrives with any

kind of injury. we are told, craig, that people who are not as injured have been transported to other area hospitals because they don't necessarily need trauma care. one of those hospitals is laguna honda hospital. 11 people transferred there from san francisco general in order to free up beds for patients who have come in with more severe injuries. we are told that the hospital is prepared to accept more patients as they arrive but again they are saying that anybody who basically come comn at this point has a less severe injury. but there are a number of people who are critical. craig? >> so waves of patients showing up at the hospital now? >> reporter: some were transport the earlier. 130 people were transported to area hospitals total. as you mentioned earlier, 60 unaccounted for. there were 291 passengers onboard along with 16 crew. we really don't have a breakdown yet of exactly where they are especially considering the fact they are being
5:04 pm
transported to different hospitals from hospitals at this point. 130 people were transported. but some people apparently just didn't need to be taken directly to the hospital and have made their own way there for treatment. >> all right. thank you so much for that update. captain, let me bring you back in here. again, as we continue to wait on another news conference in san francisco. as you look at the plane and fuselage burned out. right now we can see that much. what we can't see from this vantage point at least -- this is new you video i understand we are getting in. new video from kntv our affiliate there in the bay area. appears to be -- this is video from the terminal. from the airport terminal. some new video that we are just getting in. are we going to take a listen here to kntv as well?
5:05 pm
okay. we just had that video there from kntv. captain, let me bring you back in here as we look at what is left of that plane. obviously saw the tail at the end of the runway. we have been looking at that tail for the past few hours. we really can't make a whole lot at least from this vantage point the wings, the condition of the wings of the plane. >> they are remarkably good. >> yeah. >> assuming before the fire the plane would look almost normal if it wasn't for the last ten feet of it. looks this remarkably good shape. leading edge flaps are down. trailing edge flaps are down. there have been accidents caused because the flaps weren't down. that is not the problem here. but the tail being decapitated if you can say that about a tail, there it is right at the very end of the override. >> yeah. >> the plane landed very short. short even of the safety area
5:06 pm
and the tail of the plane was apparently taken off by hitting the seawall. and you can see that the tail actually stopped very shortly after the plane had it removed on the seawall. >> let me ask you about something else and i want to be careful here. we know from reports that the crew originated in shanghai. stopover in seoul before they eventually made their way from san francisco. presumably the pilots presumably they are not the from here are. talk to me a little bit about, maybe i'm wrong is there a gap or a cass many betwee casm betg of pilots in another country versus the training of pilots this this country? >> it is similar now. the crew may not have started in shanghai. they may have started in seoul. that is a long flight for a
5:07 pm
crew. the training is remarkably -- >> universal? >> universal and excellent. what we have now is we have simulators that look exactly like an airplane sitting on moveable hydraulic rac actuatos and when you fly the simulator it is exactly like flying the airplane. what can happen in training is that the training instructor who is running the simulator can put the pilot in the the most extreme situations and train them to get out of it. so the training is phenomenal. >> we want to play a clip of a news conference from earlier. this is the news conference from the airport in san francisco. again, right now we are waiting on another news conference in san francisco at the airport there to give us updated numbers. but we do want to play for you

forth. i'm told the information we received from asiana airlines, 291 passengers with 16 additional crew for a total of 307. we had 48 initial transports from the scene to area hospitals and that was both san francisco county and san mateo county. it was pretty even split. i believe 26 to san francisco and 22 to san mateo hospitals for are a total of 48. we accounted for 190 people transported here to a safety zone here is at san francisco international. the numbers are fluid. out of the 190 there are approximately 82 at this time that have become transported or are in the process of being transport the. we do have some passengers unaccounted for and that is something that is a work in progress. our crews worked collectively and collaboratively with not on sfpd but our brothers and sisters in the south bay made

valiant efforts. were actually on the plane doing search and rescue attempts. at 2:45 p.m. this afternoon we turned our investigation and efforts over to the federal bureau of investigation and we will be working and coordinate with the ntsb. my understanding is the scene is secured. at this time we are again working the numbers to determine exactly who is going where are in transports. but there were a number, like i said, 190 of the passengers pretty much were self-evacuated or with assistance from emergency responders over here to san francisco and they were categorized as green which means minor injuries. and i'm told that 28 of 919 -- 82 of the 190 were transported to the hospital. the other which the map is about 108 would be declared not necessary to go to the hospital. that is all that we have at this time. thank you. >> all right.

and we have been doing some math here. 307 people aboard the plane. 291 passengers, 16 of them crew members. 49 were in serious condition. part of the initial transport. an additional 132 were taken later into the incident. they were described as minor to moderate. 123 people found in the terminals okay. these were 123 people in the terminal who were just fine. and, of course, the two people who had -- the confirmed death there as well. those numbers add up to 306 people. we heard from the official at this point there is still just the one person that is still unaccounted for. so some much needed good news there in san francisco. just a few moments agorgeous the number of missing was --
5:47 pm
ago the number of missing was at 16 as is frequently the case in situations like this where there is a tragedy people begin to run frantically understandably so. looks as if a number of people ran into the terminal. again, just one person unaccounted for in san francisco. two dead. scores of others hurt as the investigation begins. i want to bring in noelle walker, a reporter across the bay, i understand, noelle. is that where you are? >> we are. we are just across. i can give you a vantage point of where the plane sits across a little estuariry here at sfo. the tail section is quite a distance to the right. we were told by witnesses, multiple witnesses that the plane came in very low and looked like the tail maybe had
5:48 pm
clipped part of the sea wall when it completely broke off which tells you it must be coming in with some amount of force when it hit for it to completely sheer off the rest of the plane and the remainder of the plane continued to slide forward on the runway. looks like it went into the dirt off the runway. >> your vantage point is especially unique. if we could have the camera zoom in on the plane for us. describe what it is that you see happening around the fuselage? >> reporter: we are a goody's transaway. ky still see the emergency crews out there, the bright yellow. investigators if they are not out there about l. be out there later for nstb. the coroner for san mateo county swept the fuselage and
5:49 pm
has found no other unaccounted for people. you you mentioned earlier hearing about 60 people missing or unaccounted for and now we know that is one person unaccounted for at the moment. again, confirmed just two dead in this plane crash. i shouldn't say just two. two is too many in a plane crash but two dead in the plane crash. multiple injuries. many serious. >> we knew what you meant there, though. thank you so much. noelle walker from across the bay. we may come back in just a bit. almost 6:00 there on the west coast. as the investigation starts into presizely wha precisely wt caused asiana flight 214 to go down around 11:27 this morning local time in san francisco. pamela malone is one of the folks who saw that thing happen i understand. what did you see and what did you hear? >> well, i was standing in the marriott hotel.
5:50 pm
i did not actually see the plane go down but i heard something. so when i heard something it sounded like fireworks so at first i didn't think anything of it. and it sounded like the loud big fireworks that you hear over the river during the fourth of july right before you see the finished product. it was two booms that i heard. then i went to the window and looked out the window and saw the plane on the ground. and at this point i think i just saw what may have been a cloud of dust or smoke from the plane making contact with the ground and then after that i saw the emergency chute come out of the side of the plane and i want to say i saw at least 50 to 60 passengers walking away from the plain. everything seemed to be organized. people weren't just running around and frantic. everybody seemed to be in a single file line and walking
5:51 pm
away from the plane. >> walking orderly from the plane? >> right. >> you mentioned you saw the -- you heard two booms and then saw a plume of dust or smoke. did you see any flames at any point, pamela? >> i don't really think i saw flames but i did see a large amount of black smoke coming from the plane i guess when the fire started and it took them a little while to put it out. initially i did see the black smoke. it came after i saw passengers getting out of the plane. >> did the plane appear to be intact when you saw it? >> yes. for the most part. everything except the tail. the tail was some where else. >> and that is what we have been looking at over the course of the afternoon and evening. the tail that is quite a distance away from the boeing 777. as you heard and then saw all of this go down, pamela, what is going through your mind? >> i couldn't really believe
5:52 pm
what i was seeing. i'm actually from alabama here for the fourth of july as well as a nurse and on an assign hment here. i was just here for an overnight stay. i had been watching planes go in and come out all night and all day and didn't think anything of actually seeing a plane like crash on the runway. it is kind of hard to put into words something that i have seen on tv but not actually witnessed. >> when you saw the folks that you mentioned who were walking away from the plane in an orderly fashion, where did they go? >> could you tell whether they were going into the terminal? could you tell whether they were just trying to get away from the plane and just waiting on the runway or waiting in the nearby field that we see there? >> well, from out of my hotel
5:53 pm
window which is like direct line of sight the passengers were going off to the right of the plane. more toward the end of the runway. not necessarily back to the left which is toward the terminal because they were still quite a ways from where the terminal was. >> how long did you look out of your hotel window? by that i mean we know at some point there was a fire. it sounds like you looked away before the fire started and the ems and fire trucks showed up, is that right? >> it seems to be so, yes. i was probably in my hotel room from maybe 10 or 15 minutes and then i checked out of the hotel and came along the walkway and started viewing from there. >> what -- are you still there along the walkway? >> yes. i just got back. >> got back to the hotel room. >> yeah. >> what do you see outside your hotel room window right now? >> well, i still see, of course, the fuselage that is
5:54 pm
there and then earlier there was a united jumbo jet at the end of the runway that is no longer there any more and then the ems and fire trucks and stuff. >> there were reports earlier from other eyewitnesses there was another plane that was close to this plane as it was landing. did you see that other plane? >> the only other plane i saw had been sitting on the runway for awhile. i think it was a united jumbo yet. it was toward the end of the runway near like the open bay and it was there until it was brought back to the terminal. as far as like is it involved in the accident with another plane, i didn't see that. >> pamela malone there on the phone. heard two booms and then saw the afterthe math of the plane crash. pamela thank you so much. safe travels back to alabama,
5:55 pm
okay. >> thank you. >> so again, folks, we have been hearing from a number of eyewitnesses over the course of the afternoon and a number of them are pretty much saying the same thing. starting to at least from a visual standpoint put the pieces this of iowale together. we heard from -- puzzle together. we heard from several people who say that one person told us that they saw the actual tail clip the runway at some point. just heard from pamela there. when seesaw the plane it was already missing its tail and we have been taking a look at that tail oh kerr verducci the course of the after-- over the course of the afternoon and evening. no doubt the ntsb team that is deployed this will be one of the first things they are look at as well. melissa is standing by and covering the aspect of the story that pertains to folks in the hospital, the airport itself. i underand it you have new
