good monday morning to you. right now, on "first look." reaction around the country and at the department of justice to the verdict in the george zimmerman case. reports this morning that edward snowden has very specific blueprints on how the national security agency does what they do. a major loss for high-speed motorcycle racing. plus, an autopsy will be done today to determine the death of cory monteith. good morning. the verdict is in. and the trial is over. but the controversy is not. it is spilling from social media and into the streets. more on that in a moment.

but first, nbc news has learned that george zimmerman will be able to retrieve his gun from authorities if he requests it. what are the latest developments less than 48 hours after this verdict? >> reporter: good morning, veronica. demonstrations in response to this verdict is overwhelmingly peaceful. but that doesn't mean that emotions aren't running high. >> we, the jury, find george zimmerman not guilty. >> reporter: seconds after the sentence was head in the courtroom, reaction spilled into the streets. >> how can you murder an innocent child and sleep at child. >> it shows this is a continuation of racial oppression. >> reporter: news of demonstrations spread across social media. thousands marched in tallahassee, chicago, new york and other cities. firing up debate about gun control, race and self-defense

laws in the nation. >> this has been a tragedy. but coming from this tragedy is a movement, which we are. and we would love it to be more awareness. not just a few people in sanford that knew about it. >> reporter: president barack obama issued a statement, urging the country to move forward. it read, in part, i now ask every american to respect the call for calm reflection for two parents who lost their young son. sunday marked george zimmerman's first day as a free man. the ankle monitor tracking him for more than a year removed. his supporters say the jury made the right decision. >> this verdict is the right verdict. there was not enough evidence to convict him. >> reporter: a sentiment echoed by his attorneys. >> george zimmerman was never guilty of anything except protecting himself in self-defense. >> reporter: the u.s. department of justice continues its assessment into trayvon martin's

death. and his parents are considering a civil lawsuit. for the time being, are focused on remembering their son. federal prosecutors man to take a close look at the trial, including a review of testimony and evidence, before deciding if they'll proceed with their case. veronica, back to you. >> thank you. well, in the wake of george zimmerman's acquittal, protests are popping up nationwide. they grew in size and intensity sunday night. from new york to washington, chicago, to l.a., where protesters marched on interstate 10, shutting down the freeway for nearly an hour. at least one person was arrested. demonstrators marched and carried signs, calling the verdict an injustice to trayvon martin. since the most vocal support, others have shown support for zimmerman's acquittal. pages in his support have thousands of likes. a new report says edward

snowden has highly sensitive documents on how the agency works that could harm the u.s. government. glenn greenwald tells the associated press, that the documents are an instruction manual for how the nsa is built. >> in order to take documents that prove what he was saying was true, he had to take ones that included sensitive, detailed blueprints of how the nsa does what they do. and so, he's in possession of literally thousands of documents that contain very specific blueprints that would allow somebody who read them to know exactly how the nsa does what it does, which would, in turn, allow them to evade that surveillance or replicate it. >> greenwald has insisted snowden insist the details not be made public. the fugitive has been stuck at moscow's airport since june 23rd, without a passport.

on friday, he said he would meet vladimir putin's condition that he was stop leaking documents in exchange for asylum. a 6-year-old boy remains in critical condition, after being pulled from an 11-foot sand hole. he was buried for about 4 1/2 hours friday night. according to newly-released 911 calls, nathan's father and a family friend tried hand-digging him out before rescuers and heavy equipment arrived. >> my friend's son, he got stuck in a sand dune and he's under the sand dune and he can't get him out. >> okay. can anybody see him? or is he completely covered by sand? >> is he completely covered by sand? yes. my husband and his dad are trying to dig him out. >> officials say an air pocket saved the boy's life. reports say nathan's injuries

are not life-threatening. and his outlook is looking good. authorities are planning to perform an autopsy this morning to determine cory monteith's cause of death. monteith has a history of drug addiction and checked himself into rehab last april. the actor said he struggled with addiction since he was a teen. monteith claimed he was, quote, lucky to be alive. and now, here is your "first look" at this morning's dish of "scrambled politic." round two of reid versus mcconnell on nbc's "meet the press" sunday. the senate leaders sparring all over president obama's nominees and filibusters that could prevent them from approval. >> the president should be able to have the people on their team that they want.

naacp, what do you think attorney general eric holder will do and when? >> i think it's a difficult question. there's a high bar to have a race-based case on the federal level. and i think the holder department will look at this very closely. the ability for them to take it to a case with a real chance of winning would require determining if george zimmerman had, over years, some sort of prerequisite to go after afri n african-american men. the naacp chairman said that zimmerman did make a number of phone calls on his neighborhood watch that could show as a motive there. it's an interesting case. but the sooner they make a decision on this, probably the better. >> you know, david, the president spoke out last year in regards to this case. he said if i had a son, he would look like trayvon. and yesterday, we saw the president issue a written reaction to the verdict.
