today won't be any better. stephanie gosk has more on the summer spike of temperatures. >> reporter: zero searing, sweating summer. how are you guys holding up in this heat? >> it's really warm. >> it's melting, actually. >> reporter: heat advisories and warnings were issued in about a dods states incompetent creasing dangerous conditions for days to come. in philadelphia, the largest senior center is extending its hours. >> our base concern is that a lot of our older adults are dealing with health issues. they could be compromised as a result of the heat. >> reporter: especially when there is no chance to cool down, not even at night. low temperatures in some cities aren't even dipping below 80, putting a tax on people and infrastructure. >> the cities hold on to the heat because of the asphalt in the buildings and concrete. so the temperatures don't drop off very much. so we start out high early in the morning and then the heat builds on top of that. >> reporter: adding insult to

injury, a water break in prince gorges county, maryland, will interrupt service for days. >> it's a big inconvenience, so i'm trying to prepare me and my family for it. >> reporter: estimated 100,000 people are preparing for mandatory water restrictions. >> i hope for the best, you know, but i'm prepared for the worst. >> reporter: in new york city, a scary moment at a political rally when a young intern collapsed from heatstroke. it took emergency responders experiencing an influx of weather related calls more than a half hour to show up. but in fill, the dogged tourist endured, standing in line for the liberty bell. a family from birmingham, alabama, said it felt just like home. >> reporter: do you think northerners complain too easily about the heat? >> yeah. y'all complain about the heat and we complain about the cold. >> that was stephanie gosk reporting. meteorologist bill karins will be here to tell you when you can expect a break. one place where things have cooled down is capitol hill. senators have reached a deal, at least for now, on the way to get things done. the agreement preserves the delaying tactic known as the

filibuster in exchange for up or down votes on president obama's stalled nominees. majority leader harry reid had threatened to change senate rules if no bargain was met. the immediate result was the confirmation of richard cordray to lead the consumer financial protection board. president obama nominated him back in 2011, but republicans kept pushing off a vote. while the compromise temporarily got things moving, it doesn't address larger questions. senators did not set any framework for restricting future filibusters of nominees. frustration, concern and calls for justice continue across the country in the wake of the not guilty verdict in the george zimmerman murder trial. now the jury member who was scheduled to write a book about how they reached their decision has changed her mind. nbc's jay gray has the details from sanford, florida. >> it's just hard, thinking that somebody lost their life. >> reporter: in the wake of this exclusive cnn interview with juror b-37, four of the

remaining five members of that panel released a written statement late tuesday night which says in part, quote, the opinions of juror b-37 expressed on the anderson cooper show were her own and not in any way representative of the jurors listed below. in the letter released by the 18th judicial court, jurors say the trial was a highly emotional and physically draining experience and asked the media to respect their privacy. while the controversy over their decision continues to be very public. attorney general eric holder talked about the verdict as he addressed members of the naacp at their convention in orlando. >> we must stand our ground to ensure that our laws reduce violence and take a hard look at laws that contribute to more violence than they prevent. >> reporter: the group has urged the department of justice to file federal charges against george zimmerman. jay gray, nbc news, sanford, florida. a canadian coroner has ruled 31-year-old "glee" star cory

monteith died of an accidental overdoes of heroin and alcohol. it says the death was likely more nothing than a most tragic accident. vancouver police say they currently do not suspect foul play and they're working with the coroner's office to see if he was the victim of a bad batch of heroine. monteith who entered rehab earlier this year had struggled with drug abuse since he was a teenager. a close call miles from earth during a harrowing space walk. astronauts were outside the international space station performing routine cable work for barely an hour tuesday when a water leak in his helmet was reported and it got progressively worse. he struggled to see and hear. >> it's too much. >> i don't know. it's a lot. >> well, that's what mission control called off the walk and it's a good thing they did. nasa says he could have choked or even drowned. he was brought back to the space

station where crews worked hard to remove his helmet. it turns out up to 1.5 liters of water leaked into his suit. the culprit could have been an unprecedented leak in the suit's cooling system. it's time for your first look at this morning's dish of scrambled politics. liz cheney has thrown her cowboy hat into next year's battle. >> i'm running because i believe it is necessary for a new generation of leaders to step up to the plate. >> when asked about the announcement senator said he thought he and the cheneys were friends. they quickly came out in support of enzi. long time congressman ed marquis was born into the junior senator of massachusetts. he replaces john kerry who left the chamber to become secretary of state. andy harris is coming under fire for comments he made in the

scrambled politics. and speaking of a man who knows solid beats, i'm joined now by bill karins. good morning. >> good morning. >> the heat? >> it's here to stay until about the weekend. i think by monday everyone will be clear but, i mean, acs are humming. i walked in at 3:00 a.m., the bank thermometers said 87 degrees. 3:00 a.m. all of the pavement that holds the heat in from the day, some are cooler, yesterday's high about half to 3/4 of the country was 90 degrees plus and pretty much everyone in the east. there was a cool feature on the weather map continues to be the swirl that i have the arrow pointed to over texas and new mexico. that's the cutoff low. it started over the carolinas. that's oklahoma and texas and new mexico away from all the hot air. the heat dome covers pretty much the entire eastern seaboard from the great lakes to the southeast. who's the hottest at this hour? right now it looks like a tie.

welcome back to other stories making news this morning. nsa leaker edward snowden who has been stuck at moscow's airport has officially submitted a request for asylum in russia. the handwritten application will be considered by russia's migration service which must give a response within three months. the u.s. drug enforcement agency is applauding mexico. they're saying it put an end to his ruthless leadership. miguel angel was captured in a pickup truck. mandatory evacuations were put into effect as a fast moving wild fire tore through a southern california community. the 9,000 acre fire west of palm springs has destroyed six homes and more than a dozen small buildings and it's forced the closure of two state highways. the august issue of "rolling stone" magazine will feature

dzhokhar tsarnaev. we turn to jackie deangeles for business. >> reporter: good morning, mara. stocks snapped an eight day win streak yesterday. the markets are going to be listening, of course, to fed chairman ben bernanke who testifies before congress about the economy and monetary policy amid concerns the fed may start to pull back on its stimulus program. meantime, ford is offering free upgrades to hybrid owners to help improve fuel economy. the offer applies to the 2012 ford z max, fusion and lincoln mkz. drivers have complained the vehicles aren't getting 47 miles per gallon as advertised. finally this morning, google is talking to media companies trying to light the channel for an internet cable service. google is trying to beat out apple who is also reportedly working with cable networks on a

station. back to you, mara. thanks so much, jackie. just how well is the economy holding up? federal reserve chairman ben bernanke will spend two days testifying on that. mcdonald's is facing some backlash over a financial guide for employees. amid a movement for fast food workers pressing for higher minimum wage. that guide suggests $600 for rent, 20 bucks for health care, but it does not include allowance for gas or even clothes or food and the budget is under the assumption that you have two jobs and are making just under $25,000 a year. just ahead, major league baseball's all-star game. betty nguyen will have all the highlights coming up.

ideological battle about the board. they wanted one person at the helm who was thrown out, they want five people at the helm of the board. what they accomplished was too much. it came as part of a larger deal that a joided the filibuster rules as a whole which would have been an awful change for democrats and republicans. >> after announcing that deal senate majority leader harry reid said not blocking the nominees will be the new normal. >> senator reed is looking forward to a summer at the beach or he's excited about going away. that's overly optimistic. going forward every nominee will stand on their own. hopefully the democrats going forward will look at each nominee and decide whether they're going to filibuster the nominee. >> i want to talk about nsa
