that reveal the wonder and power of nature. caught on camera, what on earth. rescue workers race to save a woman who has been trapped beneath a collapsed building for 48 hours. january 12, 2010. just before 5:00 p.m. and historic 7.0 magnitude earthquake strikes the caribbean island nation of haiti. in 35 seconds most of the capital city of port-au-prince lies in ruins. surrounding areas are flattened. >> what happened was beyond anything i have ever seen. >> is disaster is compounded by the fact that haiti one of the world's most impossiblerrished countries has a vulnerable infrastructure and poorly

constructed buildings. strong aftershocks further traumatize the nation's residents. news of the earthquake travels around the grown. atlantic search and rescue known as isar learns of the disaster. a group of volunteers in iceland trained for emergency rescues on land and sea. guyan immediately prepare prepo deployed. >> i was called and asked if i was able to go and i said, yes. >> the icelanders are on ground within 24 hours. despite traveling so far they were the first international team to arrive in haiti. as nice falls they secure a truck to assess the damage in port-au-prince. >> it was completely dark and there was is no electricity. people were burning tires and stuff on the streets to just to get some light. >> with them, a cameraman

filming for a documentary about isar, never imagining scenes like these. >> it was so sad. you know, we to. it moves you, of course. >> there seems to be no end to the suffering. >> isar veterans are stunned. >> we started seeing bodies being piled up on the sidewalks everywhere. >> there is little time to mourn, fearing widespread disease the government orders all bodies removed from the city. >> you had excavators picking up the bodies and throwing them into death trucks and they were taken outside the city and put into mass graves. this was something that i never could have imagine. >> light of day reveals more tragedy as the team drives to the first search location.

>> in daylight you could see the scale of of it. people everywhere. that was city in ruins. >> one of port-au-prince's largest supermarkets the caribbean market has collapsed with an estimated 100 people inside. a venezuelan rescue team is already on site. >> and they had been tunneling all night making tunnels to get to the victims. >> relatives have gathered nearby hoping for word of missing family members. >> the families, they saw the trucks and all of the equipment and now they feel like there is hope. >> the venezuelans have located two women but can't break through the dense concrete. >> we don't have the equipment. we got too tired to keep digging with our hands. >> using isar's h heavy equipment the rescue teams are able to reach two survivors who

offer hope of finding a third. >> there is another woman in the same place. tapping. >> only one person tapping around you? >> yes. >> it is more than 40 hours since the quake hit. the search takes on greater urgency. but intermittent aftershocks shake the ground. another collapse could bury the rescuers. using sensitive listening devices they inch through the enormous maze of concrete and rubble. after what seems like forever, a team member makes contact with the woman whose name he hears as nadia. >> hello, nadia? >> we called out and said that we could hear her and then outside the team leader was trying to find out where she could be. >> the basement level below is still instant and may allow members to access the woman's

location. but the cavernous basement presents another challenge. they must work 10 feet above the floor drilling holes into the concrete ceiling. each time they insert an extremely small specialized search camera that allows them to see into the vast darkness. the process is agonizingly slow. >> all of a sudden there is a pull of the camera and i look a bit and the cra camera is goint thinking i'm pulling back. and then i say oh, i have a contact. >> it is what they have been hoping for. >> and then we took a few seconds of signaling back and forth and emotions flowing and then she turns the camera andky see her face. >> it is an incredible moment. for the first time they see the woman. >> she couldn't even turn around she was so tight the space she was in. >> the team, fighting

exhaustion is energize. >> when you get into something like that, time flies. >> but the drilling takes time and they don't know how much nadia has left. she has been trapped for 48 hours without water and is severely dehydrated. >> nadia, i'm going to make the hole bigger. when i have made the hole a little biggerky give you something to drink. >> finally the hole is large enough. one of the men crawls in. >> one of them came up and then i was like finally i could see a human face. >> nadia is in trouble. they must get her down quickly. >> i was just feeling very weak. i told them i don't think i'm going to make it. >> nadia is a diabetic and urgently need medication. a medic stablizes her with an insulin shot but they still need to get her safely out of

the building. the crowd cheers as nadia emerges from the caribbean market 50 hours after she went in to buy pizza for dinner. her entire world has changed. >> when i was trying to explain to her that the whole country had been hit by an earthquake she didn't understand. >> i remember now they were talking to me but i did not really understand at this point what was going on. >> isar members ask if any one knows nadia. no one recognizes the name and then there is a commotion in the crowd. a woman has fainted. >> i remember hearing like a noise and i could see someone just like falling down. >> the woman recognizes her daughter whose name is not nadia as the icelanders think but faradia. >> we were in shock. maybe not really thinking that we would see each other again.

>> are you okay? >> oh! >> the reunion is emotional for everyone. >> you can't even describe it because, of course, the mother thought she had died in the rubble. it was like finding a drop of water in the desert. really happily. >> faradia wants her mother to know her her rescuers are and where they come from. >> can you please know my mom where you came from, please. >> from iceland. >> iceland. >> for faradiaed and her family they seem heaven subsequent. sent. hallelujah. >> the icesar team remains in

haiti for ten days. they don't find any more survivors. >> as we left, you know, it was like being torn apart. wanted to do more but you crowd don't more. >> one of the most difficult things was all of the people that we didn't rescue. i think about that a lot. >> the haitian government estimated the earthquake claimed more than 300,000 lives. for faradia this rescue team from across the globe has made all of the difference. she has her life. >> it was to me incredible and impossible that all of this would happen. these people are just such heros. >> i felt very connected to h her. this is an experience that will follow me for the rest are of my life. >> it as pleasure to see how far they came to be able to help my country.

reaching 20 to 30 feet in diameter. september, 2011. california's giant sequoia national monument and forest. a german couple are on a dream vacation to the only place in the world where these massive trees grow. >> it was one of my main goals in america jerk wanted to see the huge trees. >> they have no idea that an astonishing scene is about to unfold as they follow the 1.3-mile loop known as the trail of a hundred giants. the path takes them directly beneath the towering trees. the oldest have been stretching skyward for 3,000 years but have surprisingly shallow root systems sustaining their dramatic height. as they approach one of the trees they are alarmed by unusual sounds. >> what is that noise? click, click, click.

and then it start to become like a tearing, tearing. >> the noise grew louder and louder and i turn around and i said the tree is starting, starting to fall. >> the roots are ripping away from the earth right in front of them. >> i thought the tree to hit you and then i get a little bit panicked. >> she runs for cover but garrett aims his camera at the falling tree. as the tree comes crashing down towards the forest floor he realizes too late that he is recording sideways. >> i stop the the video and changed the camera and started again but that is really why the impact of the tree is not on the video yes. >> misses the tree hitting the ground but capturing this rare scene on video is still quite

an accomplishment says the park representative. >> i was surprised that somebody from germany had the thought of getting out a camera or phone or something and takeing that footage. i was very impressed. >> fortunately, no one is injured. when the dust settles, bystanders realize it is two enormous trees fused together at the base. >> it is tremendous to see a sequoia standing and equally tremendous to see it laying on the ground. >> no one knows why the tree falls now after so many years standing. >> we did have a very wet winter this last year. maybe the soil was so saturated that the weight of the trees pulled them over. >> the question he now is what to do with the fallen sequoias. holescould have to cut holes in them or create a tunnel through them. that would be a great opportunity for us to then look at the tree rings within the tree. other suggestions are to just leave them where they lay and

surrounded by lush valleys and mountains, it is an enormous tourist attraction. august 1996. a couple dozen people are making their way across the rocks to the base of the glacier. it is a warm summer day and as they gather to take photos of the magnificent ice wall a large piece breaks off and walls into the water. the spectators are likely entranced by the glacier, drilled by the rare opportunity to see it move but tourists are unaware that the small break in the ice signals a much larger collapse to come. >> it is like you don't realize the danger of being there. >> marco is a new york based glaciologist. he spent years of his life studying glaciers and ice. >> the the poutier is strong. all the energy is released slowly.

>> his work takes him to some of the planet's most remote environments where secrets of the earth's atmosphere are hidden inside air pockets in the ice. it is relatively common for small pieces of the glacier to cast or break off. it is one of the reasons tourists visit the site. but spectators gathered on the lake shore are on the verge are witnessing the release of a staggering amount of glacial tension. as they stand almost beneath it the face of the glacier crumbs before their eyes injuries the crashing ice sends soaring waves directly toward the bystanders. it all happens in seconds. there is no time to react. >> one person who is not moving at all even after the biggest piece falls into the water. my impression is he is still trying to take pictures. >> the powerful wave slams a dozen victims into the freezing lake and lashes them against the rocks. >> the water was very cold.

they were beaten by the wave and taken away. they could have hit their head on the rocks. >> it is a terrifying moment waiting to see if everyone is accounted for. >> in this case the risk was very high and people underestimated the risk. >> scientists think the dramatic event was caused by heavy rains in previous weeks. >> and so all this water was somehow stored in glacier and it started to move within the glacier. >> everyone survived but a dozen people sustained injuries and many more are shaken by the experience. a powerful reminder of nature's unpredictability. >> coming up, a woman besieged by floodwaters flights for her life. >> i heard her crying for help for someone to save her, that she was going to die.

go of her dog. >> my dog -- the water was just too strong and went him away and i had to leave the poor thing to its death. poor thing. no one could save him. >> for tense moments it looks like she will also be swept away. >> it was very, very dangerous. we really thought that the rope would break. >> she hasn't made a knot to hold on to. with the unrelenting water pulling her down she hangs on for her life as her neighbors scream in horror. >> it was her hands that were gripping it. there was no knot. the rope was very lose. >> with her clinging to the rope with all of her strength, the neighbors on the roof brace themselves and pull. >> we pull and pull you and i couldn't see her and i thought i don't think i can pull any more. i don't think i can stand it. >> slowly, painfully she is hoisted up one floor at a time. as she dangles over the raging

waters no one is certain that she will make it to the top without the rope breaking. everyone holds their breathe. the men grasp on to her and pull her into their arms. when she reaches the terrace the entire group is overcome with emotion. >> what a huge sense of relief. despite the tension and fear we had experienced there was also that in ten happiness to have done that and have saved is someone's life. >> she is one of the lucky ones. the rains washed away entire communities and landslides sent homes downhill, burying people beneath the mud. in the terrible days that follow, weather and rough terrain keep rescue crews from reaching remote area. survivors, many homeless are left to recover the missing. >> more than 900 people died during the floods and mud slides and more than 300 people

a group of friends converges on corona arch, a majestic structure that soars 150 feet above the ground. the plan, to build what they say will be the world's largest rope swing and then clip in and jump off. why, you ask? >> because it's there. are austin baird a recent law school grad and experienced rock climber has been there dozens of times but leaping off the corona and is new territory. >> as you are climbing up it, you are thinking this is crazy, what am i doing up here and then you get to the top and look out and you can see the entire valley and see the colorado river and it's gorgeous and you think i want to sit up here. why am i going to clip into a rope and then jump off. >> a legitimate question but there is no backing out now. austin's friend devin graham is going to capture it all on

150 feet straight down. >> a close call. >> i got careless. i wasn't thinking and i made a mistake but luckily i just brought new shoes with climbing rope around the bottom and i was able to recover like a boss and, yeah, lived to do the rope swing. >> everything is in place for the moment of truth. with devin's cameras poised to record, austin clips in for a wild ride. >> you have about three or four second fall before the rope catches and the whole thing you are just thinking i really hope the ropes catch. i really hope the copes catch. >> it looks astonishing and scary. >> you can't really think about what you are doing. you just have to do it. it doesn't matter how many times you jump it. still the scariest thing you will do. >> devin uses a variety of camera angles which means he needs a lot of people willing to try out the rope swing over and over again.

for the fatly, the crowd is happy to oblige. >> we also got a golf club and we hooked it to one of the golf club so when they hung it out like that they could see the whole perspective looking down. >> as if jumping off the arch isn't enough of a thrill for one day, austin is about to take another leap of faith with devin's cameras rolling he has a surprise for his girlfriend leslie mills. >> she had kind of been asking me repeatedly if and when i was planning on proposing. >> i had been annoying. you know, kept saying so when are you going to propose. >> i had two requirements. one it would be a total surprise and two it would be awesome and when i thought about proprosing off the top of the arch it was just fantastic enough to make sense. >> as leslie prepares for her first jump off the arch she is too focused on being terrified to think about anything else. >> i was shaking.
