obama's approval rating. i'll give you a few minutes to guess how many iphones apple sold in a three-month stretch. and the royal baby isn't the only big time baby news. i'll have that a little later in the cooler. we begin this morning with breaking news. a fire has ignited aboard an off shore drilling platform in the gulf of mexico. we're just hours earlier 34 workers were rescued. the crew was working on a glass platform 54 miles off the coast of louisiana. they were working on what's called a sidetrack well to prepare an existing well for more production when the well suffered a blowout. the workers were forced to evacua evacuate. no one was injured but a floyovr revealed a light sheen of gas. of course, nothing like three waters ago when the deep water horizon rig exploded and spewing millions of gallons of oil into the water. we'll have details on that a little later in the show.

this morning also, "the new york times" and "the new york daily news" calling on anthony weiner to step aside in the race for mayor of new york city. weiner called a news conference late yesterday where he was forced to respond to revelations he continued to send lewd messages to a complete stranger via social media even after he resigned from congress. gossip website "the dithe dirtye used the alias carlos danger. that is more than a year after he resigned in disgrace from congress. and according to the website, the relationship started just one week before this "people" magazine profile of him and his family ran with the headline, "i feel like a different person." and while weiner denied some of what was reported yesterday, he did take responsibility and openly apologized to anyone on the receiving end of this messages. he also apologized to his wife who is standing by his side.

she spoke publicly for the first time since the campaign began. >> i have said that other text and photos were likely to come out. and today they have. as i've said in the past, these things that i did were wrong and hurtful to my wife and caused us to go through many challenges in our marriage that extended past my resignation from congress. this behavior that i did was problematic, to sat least, destructive to say the most. caused many stresses and strains in my marriage. but i'm pleased and blessed that she has given me a second chance. >> anthony's made some horrible mistakes. both before his life in congress and after. but i do very strongly believe that that is between us and our marriage. we discussed all of this before

anthony decided he would run for mayor. so really what i want to say is i love him pt i have forgiven him. i believe in him. and as we have said from the beginning, we are moving forward. >> joining us now, the executive editor of politico. listen, his run for mayor was met with skepticism. i guess the question everyone wants to have answered here, is this over for him now? >> yeah, brian. you know it's a bad day when you're having to respond to an article in thedirty.com. i think that is a safe bet for all politicians going forward. the question is, will he stick into this race? he said absolutely. i'm going to stay in this race. new yorkers have to decide how much sexting is too much sexting. he had this exchange with this woman after he resigned from congress, after he confessed to his wife, six months before he announced he was running for

mayor. so that timing again has to make people think what the she can going on with this guy? and what's keeping him from doing it now or when he becomes mayor and maybe at the end of the day people don't care. >> i know that the atlantic had a piece that circulated that said, you know what? he gets this out. he fights a good fight in the mayoral race and then for the next race or the next effort he makes doesn't come up at all. in some ways it could be a net positive. is that just sort of pie in the sky logic? >> i mean, i guess. if you're trying to self-rationalize your life and gestures, sure. maybe that makes some political sense. but in the short term, he clearly wants to be mayor. polls have shown he could actually become mayor. he is leading in a lot of the polls. it's not a certainly that just because "the new york times" and daily news say he should get out that he'll get out. it's not a certainty that voters won't continue to forgive him. you know, the question is you look at that press conference. it was so extraordinarily awkward. not just the topic. they were having to talk about it again. his wife, having to awkwardly

landing gear collapse. there is also this new video taken by a passenger showing the exact moment things went wrong. the camera pops up to his face. the ntsb says the nose gear collapsed up and into the fuselage damaging the electronics bay. the plane skidded over 2,000 feet until coming to a complete stop on a grassy area next to the runway. laguardia airport was back at full capacity yesterday. the incident had caused more than 500 flight delays. all right. turning to politics. immigration reform may have hit a new roadblock in the house after comments by some leading republicans. yesterday conservative congressman steve king drew fierce backlash after he compared undocumented immigrants who would benefit from the dream act to drug dealers. >> there are kids brought into this country by their parents unknowing they were breaking the law. they will say to me and others who defend the rule of law we have to do something about the 11 million.

and some of them are valedictorians. my answer to that is -- by the way, their parents brought them in. it wasn't their fault. it's true in some cases. they weren't all brought in by parents. for everyone who is a valedictorian, there is another 100 out there that weigh 130 pounds and they've got calves the size of cantaloupes because they're hauling 75 pounds of marriage marriage across the desert. >> john boehner called king's assessment wrong adding there can be honest disagreements about policy without using hateful language. despite king's comments, boehner said he was dedicated to passing the immigration reform. the white house, not impressed. >> nobody spent more time trying to fix a broken immigration system than i have. i talked about it the day after the election. i talked about it 100 times since. and while some may disagree about how we're going about fixing the broken immigration system, it's been a big goal of

mine. >> the idea that you can, i don't know, declare yourself to have been more committed than anyone to improve our immigration system and then have nothing to show for it is a little laughable. >> jay carney will be on "morning joe" later. president obama will kick off the first of several speeches on the state of the u.s. economy. the president's remarks in illinois not expected to contain any new proposals. however, white house officials say they hope it will refocus the public's attention on the president's previous ideas to stimulate job growth. aides to the president do not expect the speech to result in any breakthrough on fiscal matters with republicans in congress. president obama's decision to restart the national debate on economic policy comes at a time when americans, frankly, pretty skeptical of what is happening if washington. according to a new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll,

his rating dropped to 45%. that is the lowest it's been since august of 2011. now a majority of americans disapprove of the job he's doing handling the economy. over on capitol hill, things not any better. in fact, they're worse. 83% of voters have an unfavorable view of the 113th congress and 57% say they would replace every law maker in congress if that was an option. question is, who goes there, right? prince william says he has already changed his first diaper. he is standing next to his smiling wife katherine. the proud royal parents, listen, any parent has been through this. if this is your first child, you're scared out of your mind. they got the first glimpse of their son, the future king of england. royal watchers pointed out kate as dress was similar to diana's at the time of prince william's

time for sports. new developments in the alex rodriguez ped saga. the highest paid player in baseball facing a longer suspension than ryan braun who was suspended for 65 days earlier this week. they say it's not a matter of if a-rod will be us is spended but when. the executive says the league has a overwhelming amount of evidence showing multiple years of usage. he also says the suspension could be for a couple of years and possibly even a lifetime suspension. the executive also said the league has overwhelming evidence showing rodriguez's year of p.e.d. usage.
