held responsible for wednesday's crash in santiago. the driver has moved from the hospital to a police station and is being held on charges of alleged reckless homicide. he's expected to appear before a judge by sunday evening. it's part of the search for answers to find out why the train appear to be going so much faster when it took the bend and slam into that concrete wall. officials are trying to work out if it was a problem of human error or a problem of the track or a failure of safety systems. it's something families of the 78 killed and many more injured are desperate to know. >> duncan, i'm curious because we're told on his facebook page there is a photograph of, i guess this speedometer and it's showing how fast it was going previously. this just from earlier this year. he's familiar with speed.
9:09 am
>> yes. this has been leased by the spanish media raising questions whether he was going much faster than shohe should. he has 30 years with the company and operating on that train line for more than a year. officials also say it's the responsibility of the driver to apply the brakes two and a half mimes before going into what is a high risk curve. there are signs warning the driver when they need to do that. plenty in advance. the question is did he apply the brakes? were they working or was he going just too fast in the first place? so far he's not said anything. we should find out more when he makes his first appearance before a judge. that has to happen by 7:40 local time tomorrow evening. >> okay.

both of you. james i'll begin with you. it feels like this president is in a campaign mode on the economy this week but what do you think his goal is with the latest push talking about the middle class? >> i think his goal is trying to get his groove back. that's what one white house official said. it really seemed that way when he gave the first speech. 66 minutes, state of the union length. he's trying to expression frustration that a lot of these things he's proposed haven't gone anywhere and to try to run against washington again. i think on the personal side obama is trying to overcome a couple of rough months and on the political side he's looking at 2014, attacking republican obstructionism. trying to galvanize his own liberal voters to make sure they show up next year. >> you mention the rough months. here is evidence of that.
9:15 am
this latest wall street journal poll shows his approval rating has slipped a bit. how much does the white house pay attention and do you think this focus on the economy will help turn things around. is that where the president arrives? >> i think the white house paying very close attention's to the poll numbers. i think where he thrives is on the campaign trail. he has this emotional connection to an audience. his liberal base is rallying for him. i think the president needs to get on his toes and needs to be put in front of a crowd to find his groove. i think that's part of the this messaging. it's not an economic message but when he's in front of large crowd he has a way with a large audience. >> james, overall the economy has rebounded during this president's time in office.

9:17 am
fight the gop? >> certainly the white house sees the gop as the main obstacle. the president's economic plans, things like increasing the minimum wage will never get through the house of representatives that's controlled by the republicans. i think the president is weary. we have three huge fights that will be looming in the fall. the president still hasn't gotten a conference on the budget. they will be dealing with the debt ceiling. there's a group of conservatives who said we will do a government shutdown if we don't see the affordable care act not funded through these programs. a fight is definitely brewing on capital hill. >> we're going to change topics. it's been a pretty tough week for anthony weiner but he's rejecting the calls to quit this race. one of the women he exchanged messages and pictures with went public. he's lost significant ground. where do you see this being headed? >> i think tough week is an understatement for weiner.
9:18 am
he's very defiant. this race is going to go to a run off. i think his team thinks they the still get to second place. they hope in a head to head battle they might be able to make him look like the lesser of two evils. i think he sees some kind of path. he doesn't want to quit like he did when he left the house. momentum is not on his side. people have turned on him. i think we're willing to give him a second chance. aren't willing to give him a third. >> lauren, when anthony weiner, here is what he said. he was asked about how many women he had inappropriate online relationships this week and here is the answer. >> it's not dozen like i told the post and they made a big headline out of it. it's not dozens and dozens opinion it's six to ten, i suppose. i can't tell you what someone

let's listen to part of what she said. >> for myself he's guilty. the evidence shows he's guilty. >> he's guilty of? >> killing trayvon martin. we couldn't prove that intentionally he killed him. that's the way the law was read to me. i know i went the right way because the way the law was and the way it was followed, that's the way it went. if it would have used my heart i probably would have went a hung jury. >> what's your reaction? >> if you go by the letter of the lay the way this attorney handled it, i think the jurors did the best they could based on the law. clearly there's a problem because this is man who stalked an individual who didn't have a gun, unarmed, attacked him and killed him. there's obviously a problem with the system but i think this woman has the same mixed emotion that everyone on the jury had
10:47 am
that they were going by the letter of the law which is their job as jurors. >> how about you. what did you make of what she said? >> i think morris is right. even the presence we have to respect the jury's decision on this. this was a difficult case to go through. when you're giving this is the law and this is what you have to follow they came to their conclusion and they have to stand by it. it's important to also recognize that that woman said she does stand behind her decision and she doesn't regret it and her heart goes out to the family but she did what she had to do. >> why do you think she decided to speak out? >> well, if you listen to that interview she said she decided to speak out because of what a previous juror had come out and said. the previous juror giving her interview on cnn said she felt that both trayvon martin and george zimmerman could have prevented it. this jury said she didn't this trayvon martin did anything
10:48 am
wrong. he played no fault here. there was no reason to change what he was doing. i think she wanted to come forward and say the juror who spoke first didn't speak to all of us. she said she's having a hard time sleeping. she can't eat. she feels like she let the family down. she followed the law and it leads many people to say the law is flawed. that's what his parents are asking to be changed now. >> topic number two. moving onto will he quit? this is funny because we're talking about anthony weiner. poll numbers are plummeting. calls are growing from every part of the room to drop out. will he listen to the calls or in this till the end? >> i think he will continue to do what he's been doing and be very selfish. this is race about himself. this has nothing to do about the citizens of new york. clearly he has a problem. he's dragging his wife into this mess. i don't understand what they're doing or what the direction they're going but he's not using
10:49 am
best judgment. i think he'll stay in the race. this is really all about him and not about the citizens of new york city. >> susan. in the essence of full disclosure you're a consultant for a candidate. the breaking point will be what? >> if he slips into fourth or fifth place. kit be a fight for number two. his name will be appearing on the ballot. there's nothing that will change that going forward. his name will appear there. i agree with morris again. this is a selfish campaign. the thing to remember about new yorkers is we love to forgive but we don't like to be duped. this second thing that came out and the way he made his life look, new yorkers won't tolerate that. i think he'll be slipping down further. >> in picking up with the wife angle here. what do you make of all this of her standing by her man despite
10:50 am
all of malfeasance. >> i could not take my eyes off. she was very well known in washington before she ever even met anthony weiner. she was respected. she obviously very close with the clintons. was a woman who has been in "vogue" magazine. she's sort of beloved across the political spectrum. to see her next to her husband, i really thought that was going to be the domain of the wendy vitters, the women of the past generation of political wives. i could not believe that a woman of whom her reputation and, frankly, of her age and of her own abilities would stand next to this man and it made me think even less of anthony weiner for letting her be next to him. i think that he brought this upon himself and he never should have shamed her into being there. she may have wanted to be there but i think that it didn't do anthony weiner's campaigns any favors. >> can you guys each give me a
10:51 am
yes or no. can he be elected? patricia, you first. >> i don't think so but he's not going to drop out. >> morris? >> absolutely not. >> susan? >> can he, yes? it's new york. anything can happen. >> no, new yorkers are smart. >> it can. i'm sorry. it's just the way it goes. >> there are better candidates than this clown. >> wait. we've got to break. taking a commercial right here because we don't want to miss the best week, worst week. come on. i think i know the answer to that one, in terms of worst week. what do you think? let's get back to the big three with their best and worst for the week. what's yours? >> my worst week goes to abadene for reasons i stated earlier. i hated seeing her stand by her husband like that. the next is christine quinn, speaker of the city council running against anthony weiner. >> how about you, susan? >> best week goes to senator john mccain because, again, he stood up to the party and says
10:55 am
it's nonsense, you don't threat an government shutdown over a policy you don't like. and i think that that really gives hope that more republicans can step forward and do the right thing. and the worst week goes to anthony weiner because of everything we just said. rryest week goes to the pope. it looks like we've got another rock star in the vatican. i think the catholic church needs a real leader like him if worst goes to larry summers who is going to have a bit of a fight if he thinks he's going to be the head of the fed. it will be interesting to see what happens when him and yellen but he's had a bad week already. >> that's really breaking down genderwise, right? to see who ends up get that job? >> it's interesting. old baggage coming out. some people had frustrations with him, piling on. we'll see what happens. he's certainly qualified but i'm not sure he's going to get the job. >> can i go back to one thing because i'm sitting here still in shock. susan, do you really think anthony weiner could be elected?
10:56 am
mayor of new york city, given all of this, really? >> being in new york politics for over 20 years, i've seen a lot of things. if you had told me would he be running again, come back from this when he stepped down? i would say no. if you asked me could eliot spitzer be seeking office again, i would say no. guess what -- >> it's different though. >> it may be different. all i'm saying is anything could happen. >> new yorkers don't elect jokers to be the head of new york city, the most important city in the world. >> i agree with you. >> this guy is a clown. people know this. they will not tolerate him as the mayor of new york city. >> as a new yorker, i don't want like to be lied to. i don't think they like to be lied to. >> i don't want him to be a mayor. it was a question of could he be. >> i'll grant you that. >> do you think he will stay in it until the end? patricia, you first, does he stay until the end? >> yes. >> susan? >> yes. >> morris, yes, for sure. >> wow. okay, you guys. thank you. >> he's a selfish guy. he's a selfish guy. of course he's going to stay in.
