and even touched on the nsa's controversial intelligence gathering. >> a lot of these programs were put in place before i came in. i had some skepticism. i think there's -- we should have a healthy skepticism about what government is doing. we don't have a domestic spying program. what we do have are some mechanisms where we can track a phone number or an e-mail address that we know is connected to some sort of terrorist threat. none of the revelations shows the government abused these powers. now, you know, part of it is he's not accustomed to -- >> president obama also addressed washington's relationship with moscow saying he believes the two countries with work together even though russia slips into what he calls a cold war mentality. meanwhile, deadline reports the president attended a private dinner with some supporters in hollywood after "the tonight show" appearance.

the he vept was not on the white house schedule. sources now tell nbc news that the head of al qaeda ordered the group's terror leader in yemen to carry out an attack that would change the balance of power in the middle east. and for the u.s., the warning has turned into action. yesterday a drone strike killed at least four people in yemen, all believed to be al qaeda members. it was the fourth american strike in the last two weeks. the u.s. has airlifted some diplomatic personnel out of the yemeni embassy. sources tell nbc news the decision to withdraw has only encouraged al qaeda and given them a sense that their goals have been achieved by spreading fear. >> now with embassies closed for days, jay leno put the question to the president, how serious is the threat? >> it's significant enough that we're taking every precaution. we had already done a lot to bolster embassy security around the world. it's a reminder that for all the

progress we've made, getting bin laden, putting al qaeda between afghanistan and pakistan back on its heels that, you know, this radical violent extremism is still out there. >> the unanswered questions throughout all this is what kind of threat does al qaeda still pose? earlier in the week jay carney said the core was greatly diminished but some lawmakers say the terror network should not be discounted. >> we now know that al qaeda is it not as splintered as we thought in the past. they can take orders from leadership and they're awfully smart people. the economy is in terrible shape in yemen much it's a fertile breeding ground for al qaeda and muslim extremism. >> staying on the topic of international terrorism, several people have been charged in the

attack on the embassy in libya. a prominent libyan militia leader has been arrested. at least a dozen other names of people they believe participated in the raids that left four americans dead. charges have been filed against some of them. those details are not public. bringing them to justice, though, could prove pretty difficult as much of lib why is controlled by militia and not the actual government of that country. the court-martial for a major nadal hasan is underway. the defendant is responsible for the killing of 13 u.s. soldiers. hasan who is acting as his own attorney in the case delivered a brief opening statement declaring the evidence will clearly show that i am the shooter. the prosecution said the defendant did not want to deploy for duty and believed he was on a jihad to kill his fellow soldiers. the former oormy psychiatrist is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted murder for

nose slammed into the runway, the captain reportedly took controls from the first officer, like within 500 feet of landing. in reason was given for the switch. we're told also it's the first time the two had flown together. in arizona, before he hit the late night circuit in l.a., president obama rolled out a new set of economic policies geared toward overhauling the housing industry. the pred said private capital should take on a larger role in the mortgage market. he also endorsed a bipartisan plan to reform fannie mae and freddie mac while accusing house republicans of obstructing immigration reform which he says will help the housing market. >> something that you don't always hear about when it comes to the housing market, and that is fixing our broken immigration system. it would help our housing market. when more people buy homes and play by the rules, home values go up for everybody. with the help of your senators, john mccain and jeff flake, the senate has already passed a

year. is there anything ground breaking? there really isn't for markets. we saw that selloff in wall street. so it suggests investors are still very much waiting to get that exact news on the timing of tapering. elsewhere, bank of america is again in the headlines. they're facing a freshl civil suit, this time by the sec and justice department around some prime loans. now this does not relate to countrywide which it inherited. instead, this relates directly to the bank. regulators accused bank of america of lying around so-called prime mortgages. they suggest that 15% of jumbo mortgages were actually not high quality loans. they were taken up by wealthy people for those that took out the loans didn't have the documentation to support their income, brian. >> karen, also -- so the "washington post" gets sold to jeff bezos. how did the stock perform on the news? >> it seems as investors are

loving the news. "the washington post" staff may not know what the changes are going to be that he brings into the newspaper. the stock market responded by pushing the shares up 4.3%. this was a five-year high. so it seems as though investors are onboard here. i don't think there is any huge success at amazon. he was the seattle. he keeps his day job. investors are just waiting to see what the newspaper is going to look like. it is somewhat of an archaic business. can bezos do anything to change that or is this a sentimental purchase which typically he doesn't make. >> we appreciate that, karen. you know, personally, i actually think peyton manning is one of the best pitch men on tv. eli, the jury is still out. well, to get ready for football we have them both together. ♪ football on your phone now is your chance ♪ ♪ to have football on your fan and football had your pants ♪

at the top of the show we talked about president obama's appearance on "the tonight show" with jay leno. if you want to sound smart today, tell your friends president obama is the first sitting president to appear on late-night television. last night marked his sixth appearance on "the tonight show" and his fourth since being in the white house. he's also appeared on late show with david letterman and late night with jimmy fallon. all right. enough of the news. let's hit the cooler. let's start with after the president's appearance with jay
