the deposed president. newspapers at home and around the world all capturing the deadly violence right on today's front pages this morning. egypt's vice president is out and leaders are wondering if today will be another day of chaos. nbc's aymon moyahyeldin is in cairo this morning. >> reporter: people are trying to bring back a sense of normally after a day that was anything but normal. yesterday police broke up two major protests, this time 24 hours ago those operations are in full swing. the scope of the death toll is still being realized. right now health officials say at least 421 people were killed, more than 3,500 have been injured and that is not the final death toll. they still expect that number to climb in the coming hours, as those fatalities and casualty figures become more accurate. the police spent the better part of the evening and early hours

of this morning sweeping through both of those squares, trying to ascertain whether or not there was any evidence to collaborate their information that these were a threat to national security. they also are pursuing senior members of the muslim brotherhood for their part. the group, though, says it will not cower. it will return and there rise again until the military hands over power to an elected civilian government. no indication though right now as to what the interim government's short term plan is. they are in the middle of a series of meetings. the country's prime minister certainly has a lot of challenges on his hand. mara? >> ayman myoyeldin live in cargo, thank you. investigators are trying to figure out how a u.p.s. plane crashed on wednesday, killing the pilots on board. nbc's jay gray reports from birmingham, new hampshire. >> reporter: witnesses say there were signs of trouble even before the crippled jet went

down. >> i seen the sky lighting up orange. i seen the plane on fire i was like he's not going to make it. i heard loud noises. >> reporter: several people heard whining and sputtering from the jet's turbines and a loud thrashing as the plane ripped through the trees, followed by the sound of a violent impact. >> a bomb was blowing up like the whole house just shook. >> reporter: flames from the inte accident intensified as the plane slid for more than 200 yards. >> it went up the hill where it came to the top of the hill and came to its final resting point. >> reporter: the two pilots on u.p.s. flight 1354 died in the crash. ntsb investigators say there's no record of a distress call from the cockpit and because the nose of the plane is still in one piece they believe the tail section may have hit the ground first. >> the tail section of the aircraft is still smoldering, still smoking and for that reason we have not been able to get in and get the black boxes. >> reporter: flight recorders that investigators hope will

provide details about how and why the jet slammed to the ground a half mile short of the runway. jay gray, nbc news, birmingham. chilling new details about suspected murderer and kidnaper james dimaggio. unsealed search warrants say he tortured 16-year-old hannah anderson's mother and brother, and then he set his home on fire with them inside and abducted hannah. she has since been rescued. the documents say dimaggio even shot and killed the family's dog. the exact nature of the alleged torture is unknown but when police arrived at dimaggio's burning california phone they found 8-year-old ethan anderson, his body was so badly burned it took days to identify. police found 44-year-old christina anderson under a tarp in the garage next to a crowbar. dimaggio was a long time friend of the anderson's. he was killed saturday in idaho during a shoot-out with police. the warrants also revealed officials suspected dimaggio's sister may have been helping him the day he abducted anderson

because of "an unusually large volume of calls. ." a wildfire in utah has burned 14 homes and threatening others. fire officials say it has scorched 2,000 acres and just 25% contained. wildfires are burning in at least 11 western states from alaska to new mexico. tearful testimony from michael jackson's ex-wife at his wrongful death trial. debbie rowe says the late pop star's tolerance for pain was low and his fear "incredible" that's why she believes doctors took advantage of him. rowe testified doctors sometimes lost sight of jackson's care and they worried they were giving him too much medication. she and jackson were married for three years in the late '90s. time for your first look at this morning's dish of scrambled politics.

peak of hurricane season, and right on schedule, we're watching a tropical depression that has just formed off the coast of africa and still have that area of interest approaching the gulf of mexico, so tropical depression number 5 is what's new overnight. this is the forecast path from the national hurricane center, it should become tropical storm erin as we go throughout the night tonight. it's no threat to any land areas over the next seven days at all, so we'll wait and see what that does a week from now. closer to home we have moisture moving up into florida, a tropical wave trying to form into a tropical depression but a 70% chance of that happening. this looks like all of this moisture will eventually drench the southern coastlines of georgia, south carolina, north carolina, florida, and areas that are in mississippi and alabama, as much as six to ten inches of rain over the next five days, enough to cause flooding concerns. mara's already complained offair but it's a chilly morning in the northeast and the great lakes.

some stories making news this morning, the united nations announced wednesday that u.n. experts are headed to syria to investigate possible chemical weapons use. they'll be visiting three different sites where chemical attacks are said to have occurred. for the first time since negotiations broke down in 2000, mideast peace talks between israel and palestinians are taking place in jerusalem. bradley manning took the stand during the sentencing phase of his trial wednesday to read from a prepared statement.

the army private apologized in his statement saying "i am sorry that my actions hurt people. i'm sorry that they hurt the united states." manning faces up to 90 years in prison. ex-congressman jesse jackson jr. was sentenced to 30 months in prison wednesday for using $750,000 in campaign funds on luxury items. his wife, sandy, was sentenced to 12 months pour tax fraud. reverend jesse jackson spoke about the trial and his son's health. >> jesse's been very sick. this time a year ago i really thought we may have lost him. i think he's strong enough now to accept the challenges put before him by the judge. a new study done by researchers at the university of california berkeley shows bad driving habits to be linked to wealth, specifically who drive bmws were more likely to show road rage like behavior and less likely to stop for pedestrians. prince william spoke about

mccain is a republican and the larger consensus is that this was something that was really out of the ability to have the united states to influence. of course, many would claim that is because the united states' influence in the world has deteriorated. going forward of course is what's important and the united states has over $1 billion worth of aid it gives to the egyptian military and now that's going to obviously be reconsidered. >> going to domestic politics now, also yesterday former house speaker newt gingrich criticized fellow republicans saying they have "zero ideas for alternatives to obama care." is the gop too focused on blocking the president's agenda and not enough on new ideas? does he have a point here? >> well he probably does have a point but of course, newt gingrich is probably one of those who is fundamentally among them who set the tone of the republican party. so chances are he's not the one to talk but he's ever the opportunist. >> and a new poll in north carolina as we mentioned finds a majority of voters now disapprove of the job that

governor pat mccrory is doing. does this suggest the gop in that state may have overreached with some of their legislative measures, things like voter i.d. and abortion restrictions? >> well it would certainly indicate that the polls show that. the gop is using north carolina as a laboratory for ultraconservative politics, and of course right now, much of this is going to be tested in the courts. north carolina prides itself on being safe, always down the middle so it probably goes against the grain of many people in that state to see what are considered extreme politics going on right now. >> bob franken as always thanks so much for being here this morning. >> thank you. coming up, bill karins and richard lui will be back for first buzz.
