secretary of state john kerry holding a press conference right now but british foreign secretary william hague, it comes on the heels on a weekend spent lobbying european and arab partners. we're looking at live pictures right now. only france has publicly called for air strikes and while kerry says saudi arabia backs them, the saudis have stopped short of saying so publicly. israel has reinforced their iron dome missile defense system. the u.s. would notify israel, quote, hours before a u.s. strike. the country fears damascus could fire missiles at them in retaliation. pope francis made an impassioned plea before 100,000 during a global day of prayer and feasting for peace. we have team coverage with jim maceda in turkey. tracie potts is in washington. let's start with jim. jim, good morning. what was secretary kerry able to accomplish? we just saw him speaking moments ago there in london. >> reporter: hi, veronica.

well, there are lots of diplomatic moving parts with meetings in vilnius, paris, and paris but secretary kerry said he did make progress drumming up support among arab nations. saudi arabia and qatar main suppliers of weapons and financing to the rebels blamed assad's regime for the alleged sarin gas attack outside damascus and both supported a strong response. but like the europeans, they fell short of specifically calling for military action against syria. they are believed -- there are believed now to be a dozen nations or so supporting limited air strikes but only france, as you say, but just yesterday to add to france, turkey where we are said a little less publicly but said -- still said they are now in favor of joining the fight, meanwhile, tensions are across the middle east because assad once again threatened retaliation if attacked.

thousands of troops and tanks lining up along the turkish border, as well as the iraqis border, jordan is on a heightened state of alert. the sense here is that the middle east is once again bracing for war. veronica, back to you. >> jim, we appreciate the update, thank you. moving now to washington, and the obama administration's hard sell of military intervention in syria. president obama is gearing up for the sixth network interviews he's taping this afternoon. it is all part of his full-court press strategy and ahead of a nationwide address tomorrow night. but a new moveon.org commercial is urging congress to reject the proposal. and it's apparently how congress is leaning right now as it returns from a five-week recess. in the house, 227 are against military action or leeing towards a no vote and 25 are for military action. 181 are undecided. in the senate, 27 are against it. or leaning no. 23 in favor with 50 undecided. nbc's priceline live for us

caused the 12 kids and one adult on board to crash into each other and crash to the ground. and from one accident to another, for the second time in a month, a fan has died after falling at a professional sports stadium. it happened outside san francisco's candlestick park just before kickoff between the 49ers and packers. the victim believed to be in his 30s was walking on an elevated pedestrian walkway when he fell under the sidewalk below. on site medical staff and police performed first aid but he was declared dead at the scene. witnesses say he appeared to be intoxicated. switching gears now, "the new york post" says it has its hand on a piece of kennedy gossip. it deals with robert f. kennedy jr., the son of the late senator and nephew of the former president. this morning the post says it obtained a lot of kennedy's numerous extramarital affairs.

what he's been saying if it is unpopular, the costs are high and the u.s. has to establish this, otherwise, these chemical weapons could be used again in the future and could jeopardize the u.s. security in other countries, as well. >> david, we need your opinion right here. what are the odds the president acts to bomb syria even if the congress is against him? >> reporter: i think those odds are slim and going down. there's some sense that if one house goes forward and the house does not would he take that as acceptable? i don't think so. this president has been particular who voted against the iraq war, i think he he understands that that would be a risky proposition to act alone. he doesn't have a lot of international support already to act without domestic support from the congress would be against the point of doing this to begin with. i think the advisers are keeping that open just in case but i don't think it's going to happen. >> david knanakamura with "the washington post." coming up, bill karins and
