take a little later in "the cooler." first, the latest on syria and this one is getting more knew angsted by the second. as president obama prepares to address the nation tonight, new polls suggest military intervention could be one of the toughest sells of his presidency. a new nbc/"wall street journal" poll shows that after a week of public lobbying more than half of americans don't think he's made a convincing case. and approval for the president's handling of the crisis, 57% disapproval and just 28% of people approve of the job he's doing on this particular issue. 58% of americans say congress should not back military action at all. and our one-on-one interview with "today" show anchor savannah guthrie he admits it's been an uphill battle? wow act without congress? the answer could be yes, no or i haven't decided. >> i think it's fair to say that i haven't decided. i read polls like everybody else

and if you ask somebody, if you ask michelle do we want to be involved in another war the answer is no so i recognize how important that debate is and it's my belief that for me, the president, to act without consensus in a situation where there's not a direct imminent threat to the homeland or interests around the world that that's not the kind of precedent that i want to set. >> meanwhile, russian leadership embraced a plan that appeared to have been floated rhetorically by secretary john kerry yesterday when he suggested assad could avoid an attack if he surrendered chemical weapons to international control. the president an other top members of congress responded to russia with some guarded optimism. >> are you skeptical? does it seem like a stalling tactic? >> you know, i think a famous american president once said,

twus but verify. you have to take it with a grain of salt initially, but between the statements that we saw from the russians, the statement today from the syrians, this represents a potentially positive development and my preference consistently has been a diplomatic resolution to this problem. >> instead of just crediting the kerry comments president obama also said the plan is a continuation of conversations he's had with president putin for some time. the president also picked up backing from former secretary of state hillary clinton who called for a strong international response and urged caution at the russian proposal. another issue for the white house is what mr. kerry said about the level of a u.s. commitment to military action. >> we're not going to war. we will not have people at risk in that way. we will be able to hoeld bashar

in chief of politico, john harris. i guess i want to start with this russian over tur, olive branch if you will. how realistic is this possibility? >> it depends how badly the united states wants off the ledge and how badly syria wants off the ledge. everything i'm hearing from the administration is they badly want off the ledge. they know that if the vote were taken right now, who knows how minds were changed but if the vote were taken right now, obama would lose this. putting him in an unbelievably situation politically, presumably the syrians welcome this because the russians are effectively their allies. i don't think we would ordinarily consider this a promisi promising diplomacy but in a moment of desperation f they could find a way to make it work they would embrace it. >> there are a lot of nuances. it is an acknowledgement they have a cache and have to show people how much they have and verify that we have all of it then there's israel which their

zimmerman's in-laws in lake mary, florida, after shellie zimmerman called 911. "the daily news" reports shellie accused george of having an affair. here's an excerpt from the call. >> is he still there? >> yes, he is and he's trying to shut the garage door on me. >> is he inside now? >> no, he's in his car and he continually has his hand on his gun and he keeps saying, step closer, he is just threatening all of us with his firearm. and he's going to shoot us. >> okay. >> he punched my dad in the nose. my dad has a mark on his phrase. i saw his glasses were on the floor. he accosted my father and then took my ipad out of my hands and smashed it and cut it with a pocketknife. >> zimmerman was taken into custody but released soon after. hours later when his wife changed her storytelling police, quote, she never saw a firearm

in the end both shellie and her father refused to press charges. while, this next story is for our travelers out there. you may be able to keep your shoes and coat on the next time you go through airport security. more than 25% of american flyers deemed low security risk will have shorter wait times thanks to a brand-new tsa program. that's about 450,000 flyers a day who gets chosen is an interesting question. you won't know you're picked until you get your boarding pass or when you show your boarding pass to security, you still have to go through the metal detectors and put your carry-on bags through the x-ray machines. the plan takes effect next month. so we are one day before the 12th anniversary of 9/11 and republican congresswoman michele bachmann under some fire for suggesting the muslim brotherhood was behind the attacks. >> we have seen the threat that the muslim brotherhood has posed here for the people in egypt. we've seen the threat that the muslim brotherhood has posed around the world.

accusation. >> wasn't so important there may have been retaliation. but those games are important. tropics, today is the peak of the hurricane season, time of the season where we expect the most activity and have it out there. just off the east coast, anyone interested in bermuda, tropical storm gabrielle has reformed. we had this about a we week & dissipated and now it's back and will move parallel to the east coast over bermuda and clip arias of newfoundland and nova skosh virginia tri and saturday but avoids the u.s. and humberto should become a hurricane, the first of the season a little later today but zero threat to the u.s. and should be out over the open atlantic at least over the next week so back at home what's pretty quiet weather and yesterday was incredibly hot in the mid the of the country. schools release early that didn't have air-conditioning. same thing today too. we'll be very warm from chicago to st. louis to kansas city, mid-90s today. humidity levels will be high and everyone on the east coast all this hot air is slowing heading our way.
