the world for you this morning. we want to start in colorado where this morning rescue crews are hope nothing get things going again. the rain has been absolutely relentless and that has brought search and rescue efforts to a sta standstill. at this hour more than a thousand people remain unaccounted for. five people are confirmed dead. but the death toll is expected to rise. leanne gregg live for us in boulder with the latest. are they going to be able to get out there today? >> reporter: they hope they will. it will be a massive day for the rescues. the rain overnight triggered more flash flpg. take a look at this creek behind me. you can see it's riding out of its banks again. earlier last week on wednesday night, the force of this creek pushed over trees. it spread debris all over this property. this home owner has lived here for about 26 years and on wednesday night this is what they were facing. flooding, four feet high with some of the water washing up this high so he has a lot of cleanup.

he'll be by later today to take a look at what's left of his items. one of many residents all across this region devastated by the serious of storms. >> how can we ever recover from this? and i know exactly inch by inch, mile by mile, community by community. >> reporter: an emotional time for a lot of people and today as i mentioned that aerial search will continue. so far they've evacuated more than 2,000 people after getting a little bit done yesterday but not as much because of the weather, so today when the storm lifts that's when they'll go back in the air and go into the more remote areas and asked people to wave sheets or flash mirrors, reflective mirrors if they are flares to light them. it will be difficult because they don't have tv and don't know when helicopters are coming. they don't have power so it will be a long and tedious process.

will not succeed bernanke. he withdrew his bid to avoid a contendous confirmation process. summers had been touted as the president's first choice for the fed job. joining us now from washington "the new york times" columnist co-host of cnbc's "squawk box" author of "too big to fail" an draw ross sorkin. good morning. >> you know, five years later if you think about where we were five years ago we were all doing a loot of news. now we have even more news five years later. >> it is incredible to think where we came and all you have to do is either read the book or watch the hbo movie to get the full synopsis. i want a little read between the lines on this larry summers move. why were people just tell the layperson out there why people were against him being the next head of the fed. >> well, first of all, it's actually interesting and almost ironic, democrats were against larry summers being the next head of the fed and he has been blamed in part for the financial crisis, for the deregulation that took place when he was

treasury secretary under clinton, for so many other things. this was about personality. this was about people who discuss decided they didn't like him for what he said when he was the president of harvard about women. he was and in some cases is the smartest guy in the room but he's also somebody who thinks he is the smartest guy in the room and perhaps because of that he lost this position and the president i don't think was ready to accept -- to undergo this nomination knowing how difficult the process was going to be and, in fact, and the party was he would have needed republicans to get him over the line, not democrats. >> we have a bunch of things to get through. if he constitution couldn't get the votes for syria would have been tough for summers, as well. is janet yell ee een presumptiv? >> the president would be, it would be hard for him to walk away from her. he doesn't have a great image around hiring women.

you'll probably see her get the nod, however, there is one other fellow and another name to mention which is don cone. he worked at the federal reserve for many year, worked with tim geithner, worked under ben bernanke and that is the name that i believe you will hear if there is somebody else to really talk about and i would argue this, in fact, that he perhaps even has more financial crisis experience and maybe -- by the way, tim geithner is the person who is whispering in the president's ear about who should get the job. he may want don kohn now. >> since you're one of the authors of this crisis "five years later" give me one impression whether it be something that surprised you about where we are now or reflecting back on the legacy of some of these people involved. >> you know, i think we're in a much better place than we deserved to be. i think given the 7.3% unemployment rate we live in today and feels awful and so many parts of the country where

the threat of force remains. >> i think kerry went over there candidly with a weak hand. i think all of us have to approach this with a healthy and strong degree of skepticism. the threat of force from a mu i multilateral standpoint is still very much in russian hands. >> that indecisiveness i think gave the diplomatic advantage to the russians. they saw it, they stepped in. this is a russian plan for russian interests. >> one high ranking syrian official called it a victory for the assad regime and some rebel groups are deflated by it but president obama is defending the politics domestically and diplomacy internationally. >> as a consequence of the pressure we've applied we have syria for the first time acknowledging it has chemical weapons agreeing to join the convention that prohibits the use of chemical weapons and the russians, their primary sponsor

saying they will push syria to get all of their chemical weapons out. the distance that we've traveled over these couple of weeks is remarkable. >> secretary kerry is in france this morning actually meeting with france president francois aland. we'll keep an eye on that. after spending nearly two years off the italian island of chilo "costa concordia" on the move today. crews have begun one of the most challenging salvage operations they say in maritime history as they attempt to right size the capsized ship. it's the first time engineers have attempted to raze such a big vessel. it's so close to land and that's what makes it so complicated going on for 90 minute, the first stage of tightening the winches around the vessel and trying to east it off the rocks was always expected to be the

41-23 the final. eli has never beaten his brother. patterson takes the opening kickoff here 105 yards. these are the kind of things where i need to talk for a long time because it'll take 11 seconds to get down the entire field of play. but he gets all the way through this unbelievable. this one, though, might not end well for the vikings, 16 seconds left. chicago quarterback jay cutler will find mar tellous bennett in the corner of the end zone and extra point wins it, 31-34. the bears, titans o. texans, houston with a chance to win it. four chances to win it actually. first field goal good but the titans call timeout to ice the kicker, second attempt. what happens on the second one, it gets blocked but there's an offsides penalty.

well, the third one, another time-out. it missed anyway and the fourth attempt bounces off the goalpost, by the way, they ended regulation and the texans took it out of the kicker's hands and won it with a touchdown the way a game should end. how about this one, i love this. an orlando television station apologizing for air just airing the jaguars/raiders game instead of the broncos game. they issued the scrolled message saying the nfl policy states they have to carry all jag as way games. we apologize for any inconvenience. by the way, that game went basically -- i don't know -- a half an hour without a first down. the raiders won 19-9. they went 36 minutes, bill, without a first down. >> jaguars were horrible last year. i mean they're obviously going to get the number one pick this year. >> i would like to see alabama
