>> oh, my god! >> desperate screams. people running. it's complete chaos at the anchorage, alaska, zoo. a woman sneaks behind the zoo barrier and is nearly eaten alive. >> get a gun! tranquilize it. i'll never forget her scream. it was definitely someone who needed help. >> a beautiful day at the zoo. families and tourists flock to see the animals to get a little closer to the wildlife they might not otherwise get to experience. >> we have about 100, 120 animals, 36 different species. we take in orphaned, rescued animals. >> one of the most popular attractions is a 1,000 pound polar bear named binky. kevin pickle has known binky

ever since the day he arrived. >> binky was an orphaned polar bear from the north slope. >> despite his cuddly name and cute, furry face, this polar bear is a carnivore and doesn't take kindly to strangers. dr. larry was taking a leisurely stroll with his camera. >> i was just walking through the zoo on a lovely warm july day. >> suddenly cries for help pierce the air. >> oh, my god. >> all of a sudden from a distance, i heard terrible, terrible screams. >> dr. rayford rushes with the camera rolling toward the blood-curdling sounds coming from the polar bare cage. >> katherine warberg, an australian tourist, decided to get a picture.

>> the 29-year-old woman from sydney, australia, is trying to get a good photo to share with friends back home. >> and katherine climbed over two fences to get up to the polar bear fence, which he could reach through, so once catherine climbed over that second fence, he jumped up and grabbed her. >> binky gets the jump on his unwitting victim. his long arms stretch through the eight-inch space between the bars. the massive bear with baseball-mitt-sized paws squeezes the woman tightly to the cage. >> i ran over in the direction of the screams and i happened to have my video camera with me. >> i saw katherine being held by the hip by the polar bear. he had her off the ground. it was the largest animal i had ever seen in my life, and he had katherine's thigh firmly in his grip. >> when i arrived there and saw

her like that, i just thought, i got to get her free. >> bystanders watch the bear squeeze his enormous head through the bars. they're confused and horrified. binky plunges his four-inch long i canines firmly into katherine's left thigh. his teeth are dangerously close to the main femoral artery in katherine's leg. dr. rayford knows there's not much time left. >> in all my experiences as a physician i'd never, ever seen anything as frightening as what i saw that day. had the polar bar severed her femoral artery, she would have bled to death in a matter of seconds. can somebody call someone? >> someone is coming. >> kevin springs into action, trying everything he can to free the flailing woman. >> i jumped over the first fence and threw my radio at him. just bounced off his head. then i grab aid hold of katherine, and it was just like playing tug-of-war. >> get a gun!

tranquilize her! >> it's a terrifying struggle between zookeepers and rescuers trying to free katherine from the bear's unyielding grip. >> the bear would pull katherine towards him, the zookeepers would pull katherine back toward them. >> she must have felt just like a rag doll being tossed around like that. >> they kept hitting him on the head. it did no good. >> the puny branches do nothing to stop binky. >> and she did make a couple pleas to don't let go. just don't let go of me. i would get a little more of her every time. and then katherine's shoe slipped off. and so her foot just slid through the polar bear's mouth and then she was free. >> hold still. don't stand. lie down, lie down. >> at last katherine is free of binky's death grip. dr. rayford doesn't know if her injuries will be fatal. she's rushed to the hospital.

>> i just felt the crunching of my leg. it was so excruciating. >> i believe it was almost two weeks that she was in the hospital. she had some open wounds. a lot of bruising. she also had a broken leg. >> very lucky. i feel very fortunate. katherine suffers torn ligaments and a couple of broken bones, but the biggest bruises are to her ego. >> there's no point dwelling over it. it's like it's done, it's gone, i've got to get on with my life and pick up the pieces where i left off, yeah. that meaning dealing with people saying i've done a stupid thing. >> the next day the zoo returns to normal. but fascinated rubber neckars flock to binky's little part of the world. everyone has an opinion. i think it's kind of sad that she didn't stay out of the fences. we're not supposed to be doing that. it kind of ruins it for everybody else. yeah. that's what happens if you don't follow the rules.

>> this is a saturday thing to do before we held back home and it's good for them to know and see and realize how dangerous it is. >> katherine winds up with $60,000 in medical bills, a hefty price to pay for a curiosity that nearly cost her her life. >> i remember walking away thinking, did that just happen? the berlin zoo, april of 2009. a 32-year-old mother reportedly depressed over losing her job, climbs over a fence, into a polar bear pool just as the monstrous white animals are getting ready to feed. curious, the bears do what comes naturally. they dive in after her, smelling an intruder. one of the four bears bites down on the woman's arms, legs, and back. zookeepers rush to the scene frantically trying to save the woman. they throw a life preserver at

the half-ton bear who releases the woman. the move also distracts the three circling bears just long enough for zoo keepers to pull the woman up the wall and finally to safety. she's rushed to the hospital, with serious bite wounds. luckily, after time and lots of medical treatment, she recovers. zoo keepers say they were only seconds away from shooting the polar bears in order to save that woman's life. coming up -- >> i'm a paramedic, but i can't get down there. >> gorillas at the zoo find a toddler in their midst. a mad bull creates chaos in the stands. and a horse goes upside down, nearly crushing a woman. >> as soon as the weight is released, you go into shock and you ultimately expire. >> when "caught on camera: survival of the fittest" continues. i'm kind of seeing a... some kind of... this is... an alien species.

a toddler plunges 24 feet into a gorilla pit. time seems to stand still, as the gorillas take notice. >> oh, my god. >> it's an elephant, see? >> it's august 16th, 1996. a small group of families is enjoying the zoo together in brookfield, illinois. >> there's another elephant. >> how many are there? >> we had gone to the zoo, the three of us, our families. i was with my wife and my oldest daughter. >> there's one right here. >> taking some video of some of the monkeys in the trees. >> there he is. >> as usual, the gorillas are a big hit. their massive size, up to six feet, and more than 400 pounds, and their human-like behavior captivate kids and parents alike. >> we were actually on our way

out of the park and decided to stop in and see tropic world. >> look at the monkeys. >> look at them running. >> it was very crowded. >> once we got in there, we all started to go through the exhibit. everybody is pretty much doing their own thing. >> suddenly, gasps of horror rise among the trees. >> i did hear a scream. didn't pay too much attention to it because the noise level that was already in there. >> chaos surrounds the gorilla exhibit. witnesses crane their necks to see what's happening. phil's heart beats faster as he rushes to the unfolding scene. >> i automatically started walking that way. i got in front of a zookeeper there who had a walkie-talkie, had it up to his ear and he started running. >> what happened? >> there was a lot of people there. people were running. >> the unimaginable has happened. every parent's worst nightmare. a 3-year-old boy, perhaps excited by the awesome creatures, leans just that little bit too far, and takes a

dive into the enclosure. he lies still, passed out on the ground. >> i met up with pete and he told me a child had fallen into the for gorilla pit. >> the gorilla has got her. >> a gargantuan gorilla is hoverihover ing over the boy. >> that's when things started getting hectic. >> one mother can't stand the suspense. >> at first, i didn't want to look. i didn't want to know. i didn't want to see what i was about to see. where? they're down the gorilla cage. they're like the gorilla has the boy, the gorilla has the boy. that's when i peered over and saw the gorilla. >> oh, my god. >> helpless, paralyzed with fear, people gather by the rails. >> you felt like it was your child. you wanted to be able to help him. you wanted to get him away from the gorillas. >> the other gorillas were circling around, making these weird noises when it happened.

>> wi heard what i call screeching from all the other gorillas and all i saw was all of them coming toward the child. >> for all we knew, they were going to try to attack the baby or, you know, use it as a toy. i just started shaking all over. and the mother comes running up to me and she was screaming, frantically at the top of her lungs, somebody do something, that's my baby down there. that gorilla has my baby. >> i told her, my husband's a paramedic. he ran to help. the zookeepers are alerted and rush to the scene. armed with hoses, they hope to scare off the gorilla. >> a bunch of the people from the zoo started coming into the exhibit and started bringing out hoses so that they could hose the gorillas out of the way. the mother, of course, didn't want to take her eyes off the boy. >> we can't do anything, pete. i'm a paramedic, but i can't get down there. >> bill catches the whole thing on camera. what he sees next defies everyone's expectations. >> i bring the camera up and start zooming in so i can get a

better look. a profoundly large and menacing female gorilla has a hold on the boy. she carries her own baby on her back. to bill's shock and relief -- i see that she's cradling the boy. the boy is face up now. >> we had no idea until we saw the videotape afterwards that bill had taken that the gorilla was actually rocking the child. >> it's as though the mother gorilla is instinctively trying to soothe the little boy. >> the way she was cradling that boy was just unbelievable. just holding onto him, waiting. looked like she was waiting for someone to come get him. >> witnesses still fear the worst. just seconds go by, but it feels like an eternity. finally a miracle. then i saw that she had laid the boy down. i could see the lower half of him not too far from that log. there was a zookeeper with a water stream.

he shot it toward there and the gorilla took off running, left the boy there. >> the mother gorilla places the boy by the exit, as though she understands what's at stake. moments later, after bill stops filming, the boy's rescued. binty is swahili for daughter of sunshine. on this day, binty shines a brilliant light into a potentially dark moment. >> binty saved this little boy's life, brought to him where the paramedics could easily get to him. >> god was definitely with him, and something that was quoted to me by the father, several angels were there also. >> the boy spends four days in the hospital and makes a full recovery. >> i can actually say i can look at binty as a human. she treated the child like he was hers. >> i think she honestly is the hero of the whole story.

a horse goes belly up and almost crushes a woman. rescuers fight against the clock as time runs out. >> don't let it go over backwards. >> sharon barnes is a horse lover. riding the trails in california is one of the great joys in her life. >> there you go. it's incredible. the freedom. it gives you a lot of warmth. you get to get away from all your cares. good girl.

>> sharon's been riding for 14 years. on this day, she won't be able to escape the cares of everyday life. >> come on. >> she can't possibly imagine what lies ahead as she ventures out into her favorite valley with her son-in-law. >> i left here probably about 3:30. my daughter and son-in-law picked me up and went out to the stable and got the horses ready. i got to ride twister. twister is a lovely arabian mare with a lot of so-called personality. but an easy ride overall. >> started the trail like normal and it looked fine. i knew that there was some water damage from the rains before, but the trail looked fine. we came around a curve and the trail kind of trapped me and disappeared. >> sharon senses danger, but tries to adapt. she's experienced and confident. >> so i start to take it to another part of the trail that was wider. at that point she stepped back

and the ground just gave way. and i ended up upside down and she was on top of me. >> her son-in-law calls for help. after some tense moments, help arrives. >> it was just a blink of an eye and it happened. >> more than 1,000 pounds of horse weigh down on sharon. the only good news, she's wedged into a "v" in the crevice or culvert. so the full weight of the horse is supported mostly by the earth. but one erratic move by the horse and sharon's finished. for better or worse, sharon is wide awake, absolutely aware of her unusual predicament. >> i was completely, completely lucid. >> sharon remains calm and tries to soothe the upside down arabian. >> i was able to calm her so that she wouldn't panic. i talked to her. >> barry spears is one of the first rescue workers on the scene.

>> this is the first time we were called in to rescue somebody that was trapped underneath a horse and the horse was upside down. it just presented new problems we had never dealt with before. >> the rescue team's greatest fear is spooking the horse. >> the horse is already in a predicament it's not used to. so anything that we do it's going to try and fight and do its own thing. because they're so much larger than us, we're not able to lift them up like a normal patient and move them around. get enough guys back there to get the weight up. that horse will roll up like this, we can slide her out. >> for the moment, sharon's okay. but being a true horse lover, she's not worried about herself. >> i was very concerned about twister. i just didn't want anything to happen to her. i heard a little grumbling that they might have to put the horse down. i told them don't. just don't. take care of the horse.

>> ma'am, can you hear what's going on? >> okay. >> the rescuers work steadily to free her. >> sharon, are you okay? >> so a vet is brought in. >> do you feel like you can sedate him enough? >> i can try. >> and they sedate the horse so we can get in close. two things that normally would n't normally be able to gain access to it is as the horse turns if the horse was able to get his weight down on her, that would be a problem. spears' dilemma is obvious. >> a person lying on t ground and having a 1,200 pound horse on top of you, the human body is not made to have that type of weight on top of it. they call it crush syndrome. that you can survive while the weight is on top of you. as soon as the weight is released, you go into shock and you ultimately expire. >> sharon is covered in dirt. the paramedics talk to the buried woman as they prepare the desperate rescue. >> after a while, the dirt was

so thick, i kept hearing people say, where is her head? >> sharon remains calm. >> i knew that i was in good hands. i knew that there were so many people up there concerned about me that i didn't have to worry. >> after more than an hour, the efforts of committed men and women produce a minor miracle. >> pull up a little bit. get her out of there. quick. >> get her out of her. >> let go of the rope. >> let it down, let it down. >> they pull med out so fast. they stood me up. and i said, give me a second, i just want to stand for a second. he said nope, you got to get out of here. >> we packaged her up in the gurney and got her out of there. she was talking to us when she left, so that was a good sign. >> as for twister -- >> the horse is okay. >> that's the best sight of this rescue is to see the horse under

the helicopter flying through the sky. >> it's remarkable that they both came out of it. >> but sharon's not clear yet. no one knows the full extent of her injuries. >> he put me on a stretcher and then they walked me down the hill. the helicopter was there, they put me right in, and lifted me off. >> a few big bruises, no major damage, no broken bones. >> didn't even break a nail in it. come on, twister, let's go. >> they say horse people love their animals as much as humans. for sharon, her only concern through the whole dramatic ordeal is the health and safety of the animal, which almost ended her life. >> twister is just fine. she was real happy to see me the first time. she came over like, hey, it's good to see you. just to the south in mexico

city, mexico, the country's largest bullfighting stadium. suddenly, a 1,000 pound bull bursts into the ring. spooked and terrified, the massive beast bolts for the stands. using his powerful legs, he vaults over a five-foot wall into the seats. the crowd scrambles to escape the deadly horns and horrible hooves. every man, woman, and child is in danger. confused, the bull puts his head down. he's defending himself from the perceived threats around him. chaos follows. he plows ahead, head down. the bull appears to gore a woman here, but she's okay. as the half ton of testosterone pushes his way forward, then unexpectedly he gets stuck. struggling, tired, out of gas, the bull settles in. in minutes, the bull is sedated and removed from the stands. seven people are hurt. miraculously, no one is killed,

who will survive this epic darwinian struggle? krueger national park, south africa. a group of enthusiastic tourists takes in the sights. >> we decided to go to africa because my wife and i have the philosophy of going on a once-in-a-lifetime vacation once a year. >> jason is a mild-mannered attorney on vacation with his wife. >> and safari was something we always wanted to do. >> david and cheryl are also on the trip. >> my first trip to africa, yes. and i was quite nervous to go because i didn't know what to expect. >> africa, you realize when you're there, is the cradle of civilization. you can kind of feel it. the air is different. the air quality is different. the lighting is different. >> i'm thinking, here we go. this can be a real wild ride for us. look at the little ones. look at the little one. that's so cute.

>> jason is ready to call it a day. >> usually on safari, you don't really see much and we didn't expect any action. >> then a quiet watering hole appears out of nowhere. >> our guide said, let's stop at this watering hole, because he heard that there were some lions there. it wasn't until our last hour, on our safari, our final last day, our last hour, the sun was setting and at that watering hole is where we saw the pride of lions on one edge and the buffalo on the other. >> soaking up the last rays of the hot day, the tourists grow weary. >> we wait add full hour before the buffalo started to make its way around the water. >> there were a group of lions to one side and across on the other side were cape buffalo. >> i thought to myself, oh, my gosh, i better have the camera on. >> this could be very interesting. >> three of the buffalo started to walk towards the lions. >> the tourists tense up as they see the inevitable confrontation forming on the far side of the water. >> as the herd was coming around, there seemed to be three

leaders of the pack. it seemed like there was a mommy, daddy, and a baby buffalo. and they were upwind so they did not smell the lions. couldn't see them in the grass. so they kept on going. >> he's enjoying himself and he has his nose in the air, but he wasn't smelling the lions. >> but the lions catch the muffky scent of dinner. their thick muscled legs tightens. >> they're crouching. >> the big cats are perfectly camouflaged. >> and he's looking like he doesn't have a care in the world. >> that is a huge buffalo. huge buffalo. >> the lead buffalo, also called a bull, is a male, one of the largest and strongest in the herd. he is strolling along when suddenly his survival instinct kicks in. >> finally, the lead big buffalo understands that there's danger. he turns on a dime and starts running back. >> the herd catches on and starts a stampede. witnesses say the noise is deafening. >> i saw a lion come into view to the right, passed the other lions up. passed the lead big buffalo.

>> the hunt is on. in a battle for survival, the lions always go for the weakest. then the lioness, reaching speeds of up to 50 miles an hour, makes her move. >> jumped on the baby, dragged it into the water. >> she's going for it. she caught him. oh, she did. she got him. did you see that? >> unbelievable. >> and you could hear the baby screaming, you really could. >> they went spiraling into the air into the watering hole. >> they're trying to drag him out. they're dragging him out. >> in seconds, with an extraordinary leap, the lion snags the baby buffalo and slings him into the water like a rag doll. >> just then i saw a splash. then the other four lions came and just sort of surrounded this poor little hapless buffalo. you could hear it cry almost, when it got hit. you could tell high pitched that it was making a funny sound. >> the other lions gathered

around and decided to pull it out of the watering hole. some of them were chomping on the baby buffalo's mouth to try to suffocate it. others were trying to drag it out of the water. it seemed like free-for-all. >> but the lions are just one of the baby's problems. there's a risk of drowning for the buffalo and in a flash, another mortal threat surfaces. >> there's a crocodile there too. >> and i saw this huge crocodile grab ahold of the babe's rear leg and try to drag it into the water. the crocodile -- the crocodile is going to get the baby. >> a 15-foot long crocodile, armed with more than 60 teeth and powerful neck muscles enters the melee. >> look at this. the crocodile is taking the baby away. >> comes around, opens his huge jaws and snaps the baby buffalo around the torso. tries to pull him back into the water. what happens is probably the greatest tug-of-war i have ever seen. >> crocodiles are some of the

most opportunistic predators on the planet. they take what they can, when they can. but the lions aren't about to give in so easily. for the next 30 seconds, the pride of lions wrestles the lord of the water in a bloody tug-of-buffalo. >> he has two attempts to try to grab the baby. he's going to wrestle the prey away from the lions. so on try number three he has ahold of the baby's leg and he begins to pull. and this is where a lot of people get upset at the film. >> the group of tourists watches in amazement. not knowing the outcome, fearing the worst. >> they're going to lose it. >> they're going to fight over it. >> oh, my gosh. >> in a split second, one side relents. >> eventually the crocodile gave up. >> noticing that there were a number of lions and probably noticing that he was exposed to these lions, the crocodile

weapon, with massive horns, the buffalo swings the ferocious lion into the air. >> we think it was the same buffalo, got another lion, hooked it with its horns, threw it up in the air. ooh! >> by now, the lions know that they are outnumbered. >> pandemonium, the tourists watch in amazement as the herd tries to save the baby. >> they were chasing lions one way, chasing lions the other. a few hardy souls remain with their catch, refusing to budge. food is sometimes hard to come by here on the plains. but the sheer size, weight, and aggressiveness of the buffalo convinces the lions that no meal, no matter how hotly contested, is worth a good old fashioned trampling. >> and there were maybe only like two or three lions left on top of the baby that we thought is probably dead by then. >> the lions scamper off in search of easier game.

then, after almost nine minutes, after a mad chase, a powerful pounce. followed by a tumble in the water. after a crocodile joins the action. after a beastial tug-of-war and in the midst of almost certain death, a simple heart-lifting miracle. and then it stood up. >> the calf is still alive. yeah. it's trying to get away. it's standing up. it's standing up. it's standing up! it got away. they've got him back. they do have him back. >> the tourists let out a collective sigh of relief as the wobbly calf rejoins mom and dad. the calf faces the abyss and lives another day.
