and the nhl start up. you really can't get much more than that for a sports fan. good morning. brian shactman, wednesday, october 9th. kanye and kimmel, they're set to meet after their little social media dust-up. we also have maybe one of the best celebrity impersonations of all time. we'll have that for you. but we begin with some historic news surrounding the federal reserve. just a few hours from now, president obama will nominate janet yellen as chairwoman of the fed. yellen would be the first woman ever to lead the central bank of this country. yellen currently the fed's vice chairwoman, she's been a key architect of the fed's plan to keep interest rates near record lows and with the fed buying trillions of dollars in bonds to support the economy. yellen would replace ben bernanke, of course, a close ally of hers whose term ends in january. we want to bring in andrew ross sorkin, host of "squawk box" and also the founder of "new york

times'" "deal book." the markets seem to be okay with it. tell our audience why. >> well, the expectation had been for at least the past couple weeks, once larry summers had dropped out of the race to even describe it as a race, but had had dropped out of the running, if you will, that she was going to get the role. and more importantly, she is considered what's called dovish in the business which means that she wants loose monetary policy. she's more likely to keep printing the money, if you will, which should help the stock market at least in the short term. of course, there are larger questions about what that means for the long term and whether all that printing of the money is ultimately helping get to the real economy and helping with the unemployment problem in this country. from a market perspective, it is clear that she is a winner. and by the way, what will be the most powerful woman i would argue now in the world. "the new york times" described her today as a little woman with a very big i.q., and that she is. >> yeah. and she seems not like the power-type person. i'm assuming there will be some

resistance in the approval process but nothing like with larry summers. we don't have a lot of time so i want to get to the debt ceiling and the default. we're getting clamoring from a bunch of people that may be defaulting wouldn't be such a bad thing. now, just tell me from the perspective of wall street and the people you talk to, is that silly talk? >> no. sadly, there is now real talk that we could default or at least we could go over what is this deadline on october 17th. and perversely, the more the market doesn't react. so the more you don't see the market cratering, and it was down yesterday, but the more it doesn't go into a complete tailspin, the less pressure there is going to be on washington and congresspeople to actually pass something. and therefore the greater chance, oddly enough, that we don't. and actually that we create a real crisis. >> andrew, are there smart people actually saying a default wouldn't be that big a deal? >> there are people like that. stan druckenmiller is one. there are people who believe

this needs to be used as a bargaining chip. i don't think there's anyone who truly believes that it is okay, but there are people who believe it is okay for a day or two or three. >> all right. andrew ross sorkin, as always, good to have you on the show. >> thank you, brian. appreciate it. >> andrew ross sorkin for us. now to the government shutdown where both republican and democratic lawmakers advancing measures to at least partially get the government back up and running. but as we begin day nine, president obama and house speaker john boehner appear to be no closer to a compromise. yesterday the president called the house speaker to reiterate that he will not negotiate with republicans until the shutdown has ended and the debt ceiling is raised. both men spoke about the crisis later in the afternoon. >> the american people do not get to demand a ransom for doing their jobs. you don't get a chance to call your bank and say i'm not going to pay my mortgage this month unless you throw in a new car and an xbox. imagine if a democratic congress threatened to crash the global economy unless a republican president agreed to gun

background checks or immigration reform. i think it's fair to say that republicans would not think that was appropriate. we can't make extortion routine as part of our democracy. democracy doesn't function this way. i know the american people are tired of it. and to all the american people, i apologize that you have to go through this stuff every three months, it seems like. and lord knows i'm tired of it. >> the long and short of it is there's going to be a negotiation here. in times like this, the american people expect their leaders to sit down and have a conversation. i want that conversation to occur now. the president said today was if there's unconditional surrender by republicans, he'll sit down and talk to us. that's not the way our government works. >> meanwhile, the house has passed a bill that would make sure government workers are paid on time instead of after the shutdown. the bill also creates a bipartisan negotiating team between the house and the senate to work on the debt limit. democrats have rejected another

so-called supercommittee. democrats in the senate, meanwhile, moving forward with a clean debt ceiling increase and looking to shore up republican support to bypass a filibuster. the deal would raise the debt ceiling through december 2014. the bodies of four soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice this weekend in afghanistan will arrive at dover air force base later today. the family of sergeant patrick hawkins and the others will have to pay their own way to delaware and pay out of their own pockets for their funerals. that's because the pentagon says it is unable to pay out death benefits because of the shutdown. that means any service member killed since october 1st will not receive the automatic $100,000 that is usually paid to families within 36 hours of a death for funeral costs. it's an issue that has led to outrage on both sides of the aisle. >> it's shameful and embarrassing that america could fail the families of our fallen heroes.

appalling, frightening. >> i don't care who it is or how it's shaped, but let's sit down and get out of this so that these families whose loved ones just died, just died, will receive the benefits at least that would give them some comfort and solace in this terrible hour of tragedy. >> the house of representatives is scheduled to vote on a bill today to restore those payments. now we go to the supreme court where it appears at least a part of the nation's campaign finance laws will be struck down. yesterday justices heard arguments on the limits of direct contributions from individuals to candidates. it's revisiting 2010's citizens united case. the courts seem divided over ideological lines. justice ginsburg said, "by having these limits, you are promoting democratic

participation, then the little people will count some, and you won't have the super-affluent as the speakers that will control the elections." just scalia weighed in saying, "big money can be in politics. the thing is you can't give it to the republican party or the democratic party, but you can start your own pac. i'm not sure that's a benefit to our political system." looks like chief justice roberts is expected to be the key vote here. he indicated he was open to a compromise on the law that would leave some restrictions on contributions intact. let's go to new jersey politics now where governor chris christie looks pretty much like a shoo-in as a second-term governor in the garden state. last night christie met his challenger, state senator barbara buono. the two candidates spoke on a lot of issues including christie's presidential aspirations. >> people have been talking about me running for president in this state since 2010. they all said i was going to do it in 2010. i said i wouldn't and i didn't. the fact is after 2017, i'm going to be looking for a new job anyway.

so as we go forward, i'm going to continue to do my job the best way i possibly can. and i am not going to declare tonight, christine, for you or for anybody else. >> governor, it doesn't bother me that you're running for president. what bothers me is how you're running for president. >> i can walk and chew gum at the same time, christine. i can do this job and also deal with my future, and that's exactly what i will do. >> a recent quinnipiac university poll had christie leading 64-30%. voters head to the polls in new jersey on tuesday, november the 5th. let's turn now to some economic news overseas. switzerland -- this is an interesting story -- they're going to hold a vote to grant an unconditional income of $2,800 a month for every adult living in the country. it comes after organizers collected more than 100,000 signatures need to do call for a referendum. the group behind the issue calls it a financial safety net and says it will be partially financed through the country's social insurance systems. pretty amazing. before we go to break, though, the topic of today's twitter question a little different. try to name this celebrity.
