right now on "news nation," new reaction from the white house staffer now fired for being the so-called mole behind a twitter account that leaked internal information and some scathing words at colleagues. and developing now, a 14-year-old boy in court in the past hour, now charged as an adult for killing a teacher at his high school. what police say now. plus, a texas dad accusing a high school coach of bullying after his son's team loses hi football game 91-zip. this is our news nation gut check. i'm tamron hall, right now a white house meeting is getting under way between health care industry ceos and top obama administration officials including health and human services secretary kathleen sebelius, part of this new campaign launched by the white house to fix the damage caused by the rocky rollout of

healthcare.gov. new effort to fix the site's problems may be starting to work. the files coming over from the site are now accurate. earlier today, house democrats gathered in the capitol for a briefing for health and human services officials on the problem. health republicans will receive a briefing at some point. meantime, secretary sebelius will head to phoenix to visit a call center tomorrow and she'll testify before congress next tuesday. last night she responded to reports that the administration before the site launched. >> do you know when he first knew there was a problem? >> i think it became clear fairly early on, first couple of days. >> not before october 1st, there was no concern to the white house or hhs? >> i think we talked about having testing going forward.

>> nbc news chief white house correspondent and political director chuck todd joins me now. quickly, to clarify, politico is saying that some of these industry experts or sources, a lot of these people have been unnamed as you well know, are seeing the number of people enrolled is still low. one of the problems we discussed last week and beginning of this week is that the information, for example, spouses were being listed as dependents, that the files or information coming in is now more accurate. with that said, in your last report, you're discussing now that there are some democrats on the hill who are vocalizing there are issues here with the rollout. >> reporter: and this is where this becomes as much of a political problem as anything else for the white house. look, part of this in a meeting with the insurance executives is to reassure them and also get their feedback but to reassure them they are going to get this fixed and hear the complaints and every day you hear that in the last 48 to 72 hours they are

getting some of the things fixed when it comes to the website. but there were house democrats got a briefing today from hhs officials about the rollout, rick nolan, a long time veteran of capitol hill, served in the 70s and sort of came back to congress winning a district and beating a republican. he said he thought that this rollout has damaged the brand. then he told this to the associated press, the president needs to man up, find out who is responsible and fire them. this is somebody that's got to face a battle in 2014. jean sha heene, not exactly a bomb throw inside the democratic party, open letter to the president today asking the president to consider extending the open enrollment period, perhaps look into delaying the penalty phase when it comes to the mandate if you don't have health insurance. she's up in 2014. somewhat safe but could be vulnerable, new hampshire

sometimes becomes a swing state, you're starting to see democrats now vocalize their nervousness about this and about how this could accumulate into political problems for them in 2014. white house well aware of this problem. they look at this as a three-week sprint to get it fixed. >> minority leader nancy pelosi responded saying she does not support the idea floated out there and her quote was, perhaps her experience was in her state, she's acting from that experience and this really has been in some respect a state to state experience. which complicates the problem. what i do find interesting, jay carney is saying starting tomorrow, we're going to see daily briefings on the progress and the fixing of these problems and updates to health care.org. it is this transparency now that we may see that people who are critical of what's happened so far believe he we didn't see. >> >> reporter: the white house has gotten outside political

advice from folks who have said, treat this like the oil spill. and meaning this, if you remember the oil spill, the first few days it looked le eed crisis they couldn't get their arms around. the more they flooded the zone with information and more they did briefings, every single day doing the incremental updates, the idea of behind this is whether or not they provide briefings there's going to be daily updates in the press when it comes to what's going on with healthcare.gov. if that's going to be the case, it's incumbent on the administration to lead the briefings using the oil spill as a model. there was advice at the white house in the next few days to use the oil spill, how they handled that. in hindsight, maybe they struggled on front end for a few days but it is one of better

crisis management success stories of the first term. in many ways treat this as a crisis of the moment, almost like you would a natural disaster. >> that's a great point. greatly appreciate you making time for us. let me bring in weapon weapon reporter lina sun. thanks for your time. in one of your reports, you make the point that there was -- there were tests at least to see if the system could hold up under pressure. and despite the failed test, the administration still plowed ahead here. now as chuck mentioned there's a strategy of cheatitreating it le oil spill and not letting your quote/unquote enemies use it against you. >> that's fine as a strategy but the bottom line is you have to fix this thing and it has to work. it is a very complicated technology issue. there were 55 contractors working on this project and there was a very, very short

timeline to get this project done. a lot of regulations and requirements didn't come out until spring of this year which means that a lot of folks had about five months to get the job done. they were under the very, very strong dictate, which is there is no delaying october 1 rollout. so it had to go live then. there was not enough testing from what i've been told according to people close to the project, which is why a few days before, something that was supposed to be able to handle 60,000 people signing on at the same time, crashed after only a few hundred got on. >> what were some of these people saying about the sounding of the alarm here. obviously it is easy after the fact when something turns out to have a rocky rollout or disaster out as it's been called, rollout for many unnamed sources to say, we knew this could happen or we may have said this, but was there a strong siren of, listen, this is going to be a major disaster for the administration if you do not fix the problem or

delay? >> i think that's going to be a key question. we don't know the answer to that. we don't know how high up people knew that there were problems or whether this was bad news, they simply did not want to pass up to the top because they knew the answer was there is no delay, failure is not an option. and i think now you're going -- you're getting the sense that the finger pointing and blame game is going to start coming out. there's a congressional hearing tomorrow. i'm sure house republicans are going to really be drilling down and find out from the contractors who are testifying what went wrong. i think it's helpful that they will provide daling briefings. up until now, they have been very stingy with information. >> these daily briefings, how do you see that playing out? i mean a lot of this is so techie, if you will. it's enough for us to update iphones these days. what type of information will be relatable and honestly useful to the american public in the daily

briefings? >> i'm not sure because they haven't had any yet. i think maybe part of the strategy may be to overwhelm you with really techie super nerdy stuff, people's eyes glaze over and it takes a way a little bit of the tension over information that's not getting released. >> let me play a bit of this interview with kathleen sebelius with cnn. she was asked whether she will resign. let me play what she said. >> did you ever talk about resigning to the president? >> what i talked about is doing the job i came here to do. this is the most important work i've ever done in my life. >> if this persists, or even at this point now, would you consider resigning over this? >> i think my job is to get this fully implemented and get the website working right. i work with the pleasure of the president, he is similarly focused on making sure we deliver on this promise. >> you know the conventional wisdom, even if the president wanted her to resign, kathleen

sebelius to resign, the confirmation hearing to be replacement would be a nightmare and the focus would be mitigating the health care law, not the person to replace sebelius. what are your thoughts there? >> i think they have some time. this -- if they really do make some progress and get to tackle this and things are moving more slowly by middle of november by thanksgiving, could be potentially a good day, if things are moving move smoothly, some of that other talk will go away and people will get enrolled. but the problem is those who want to sign up now, those who are really sick and need health care, that's not good for the success overall of the marketplace. you need young, healthy people to sign up. >> absolutely. >> at the same time, you have to remember, when they rolled out medicare part d, it was really glitchy, it tookz week for for a lot of information to get through. i think it's harder now when you have one party that that's their

whole, to try to get this thing to fail. >> that's the point. should be also discussed here and this is something even "morning joe", republican, joe scarborough points out, republicans had their fair share idea of time to come up ways to fix the problem. if you point outlook at this glitch or that glitch, any criticism from the republican party, it seems to lack the krenlt of maybe equal to the website because people see it as politics as usual. >> that's the difficulty, any kind you have a large i.t. rollout, it's tricky and when it's like so large it's unprecedented and federal exchange is pulling together information from 36 states, insurers, from 2 to 45. each one of those insurers ha four insurance plans they have to offer in four different categorie categories. all has to be put together in one place accurately and then

a 14-year-old boy has been charged as an adult in the murders of a high school teacher in massachusetts. he appeared in court moments ago charged with first degree murder. he's being held without bail. police say he killed 24-year-old colleen ritzer last night. they found her body in the woods behind the high school after the teacher and the student were reported missing. >> she was a very, very respected and loved teacher. and 24 years of age, it's a terrible tragedy for the entire danvers community. >> ron, are police giving us anymore as to why they believe this young man would have murdered the teacher? >> reporter: well, he's the only

suspect according to police and they charged him with premeditated murder. a 14-year-old, so they believed he planned this out, not an accident. they are not looking for anyone else. danvers is a city of 25,000, typical bedroom community for boston. you can see the high school, it's closed down and as are other schools because of this. you can see the woods near where the teacher's body was found. there were reports of both people missing, the student and the teacher yesterday, and that's what started this whole process going. at first students were looking for fellow student because they thought he was a missing person. they came to find out in the morning that in fact the teacher was missing as well. and that she -- her body had been found. a very emotional night for the school community here following this on social media and finding out in the morning that in fact a beloved teacher, just 24 years old, was murdered. just a very -- it's hard to describe how shocking this is

for this community. i was just at a private home talking to some students and their parents, the first thing the pafrnt said, this is not the kind of place this kind of thing happens. so stunning. again, because this kid -- young man is 14 years old, again charged as an adult, a horrific crime and everyone here trying to understand how this possibly could have happened in a place like this. there's no motive. we have no idea why this happened. she was a freshman teacher, he was a freshman student, relative newcomer to town we're told. that may have been the relationship they had a freshman class. beyond that, no idea how this happened. >> do we know if he was one of her students? i know he attended the school there but was he one of her students? >> reporter: what we know is that he was a freshman student and she was a freshman math teacher. so presumably they may have intersected in that way but i'm not sure of that exactly. that seems to be how they came

together. again, what could have caused something so violent and awful to happen here, when we talk to people, they have no idea. the young man was not very well known. he had just come to in community recently from talking to students and parents. so just a complete mystery of how this awful thing could have happened. >> we know there's a candlelight vigil tonight at the high school. all right, ron, thank you very much. we'll see if police release more information on this. students and faculty as well as other members of the small community in sparks, nevada are planning to gather outside the middle school for a candlelight vigil there, honoring a teacher killed in monday's deadly shooting. police are trying to establish a motive for why the 12-year-old 7th grader open fire in a basketball court killing his teacher and wounding two others before taking his own life. while authorities have yet to release the boy's name, in

students say he may have been bullied. one student they spoke with said the shooter told a group of students, you guys ruined my life, so i'm going to ruin yours. meanwhile, we're hearing for first time from the family of mike landberry, hailed as a hero, confronted the shooter. >> i lost a brother. his wife lost a husband. you know, their kids lost a dad. in hindsight, thank goodness, you know, mike was there because it could have been a lot worse. >> martha bell isle joins us now. what have you been able to uncover that this student said he was being bullied and uttered these words, you ruined my life, so i'm going to ruin yours, at least according to one of the students. >> reporter: we've been talking with a number of students at

different -- as they are coming into different schools and about their experiences. they said he was rather shy but he was also -- they were also talking about that he was maybe pushed around. he did call out at one point, stop laughing at me, that's according to one of the students. it was some trouble going on and we don't know exactly where that came from or what sort of history he had in that way. >> what are police saying regarding his parents? there are some reports that they could be charged as well. what do we know about this? >> reporter: yesterday in the news conference, they said they would not release the name of the shooter or his parents to protect them. and we actually have an editorial in the newspaper today where we're challenging that. we think that information should be released because it might have to do with public safety and we might find information that could be hurting it to this case. >> this is a big part of this case, piecing together what was happening at the school. even if he were the victim of

being pull bullied, that does not give one motive to shoot others at the school and kill that teacher. but you are able, to your point, to piece together more about the background and what may have been happening with his life and at that school. >> we need some context and we can't do that without that information. >> what has the police department said in response to the reno gazette journals and others saying the name should be released, he is now dead and this does not fall under the criteria of a juvenile court where you're protecting someone's background so they may be able to lead life as an adult later and not have a legal past following them. he took his own life there. >> reporter: that's right. they haven't responded yet to our request and but we will be working on that again today. >> all right, martha, thank you very much for the latest information on what's happening

there. again, another small community dealing with loss after gun violence. still ahead, new information on the internal mystery surrounding -- international mystery surrounding young girl who officials believe was abducted by a roma couple. they are investigating whether this child was going to be sold to a wealthy couple. we'll get the latest on that information, plus a lot of reaction to this story. so a texas dad accuses his son's high school football coaches of bullying after a 91-0 blowout. some say the complaint sends students the wrong message. is this an issue of maybe poor sportsmanship or when you're beating a team by that much, are you bullying them? it's our gut check. has it's ups and downs.

with two adults who are not related to her. officials are investigating whether maria was supposed to be sold to a wealthy couple but was instead sold cheaply or given to the roma couple as police were closing in. also today, police made more arrests in the roma community where maria lived. michelle, this report about this wealthy couple, that's unconformed. this is one of the theories floating out here. let's deal with the fact that police did make more arrests in that community. what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: right, apparently they are looking at two or three people who are carrying a child that is not believed to be theirs. i was in an island off of greece within the roma community. i think was become obvious, police not even just here in greece but around the world, because we know there was a child taken away from a family in ireland this week, that turned out to not be a problem. that child actually belonged to

that roma couple. but there's a scrutiny now on these communities where people, many of them don't read or write. they don't have official documentation at the time of the child's birth. sometimes they'll go back later and get official documentation. police believe that's what happened in this case when young maria was not the child of this couple. so, what's happened here since this case broke was that the highest court in greece wants to do an emergency review of old birth certificates of the last six years, not only to see if there might be a potential parent could be revealed through a document search but to see if there are other kids whose documents seem to be not on the up and up. police seem no closer right now, even after a week since this child was taken from the roma camp to knowing what exactly her background is. yesterday we sat down at length with a lawyer that's been representing the roma couple.

the lawyer at times became emotional and says that she has come to believe what the roma couple is telling her, that she wouldn't have taken the case if she felt they had stolen this child or been involved in a trafficking ring. the couple claims that maria's biological mother was a bulgarian roma prostitute who took the child who was unwanted years ago to other roma families in the area and tried to find a child a new home. the couple claims they didn't want the baby at first but once they held her and saw her and worried about her future, they decided to take her in, even though they had five biological children of their own. keep in mind though, police are saying this roma couple in question, claimed officially with papers 14 kids were theirs and that seems not to be the case. their lawyer wouldn't comment on that but implied that some of those other children may have been in fact been the couple's

tweets revealing internal information, criticizing senior administration officials, including the president. jofi joseph was a top national security director and working on negotiations with iran. he was fired last week after officials discovered he was behind the twitter account, the statement to nbc news, joseph takes responsibility for the account saying in part, quote, i deeply regret violating the trust and confidence placed in me. what started out as an intended parody account developed into a series of inappropriate and mean-spirited comments. the daily beast, which was the first to break the story, one reading, i'm a fan of obama but his continuing reliance on a vak

cuous sypher like valerie jarrett concerns me. thanks for your time. daily beast, you broke the story and started to save these tweets. was it known early on this person was actually working in a pretty important job and that's why you started saving those tweets? >> that's a good question. for over two years, journalists and national security officials inside the administration and lots of people on capitol hill had been tracking this twitter feed. some following it with a lot of anger and frustration because jofi joseph managed to frustrate and insult and really criticize people from all over the washington foreign policy community. there was something of an informal community of people hunting for them and hunting for the identity of the mystery leaker and that's why we started

saving the tweets because they had clues. inside of his mystery twitter feed, he did spread disinformation and claimed to be working at a think tank an to have previously worked and capitol hill which turned out to be true. correctly predicted he was working inside the administration based on the quality of the information that he had about what was going on inside the white house and state department and ultimately that turned out to be the case. so it was a story whether or not this guy was actually a white house official but the fact he turned out to be a white house official made it much more important. not only was he insulting all of these people, famous in washington, but he was doing so while being employed by them. that was an added level for sure. >> in his statement we just read, he expresses regret and regrets doing this and he's apologizing but these tweets went on, what, two years and he certainly sounds like a jerk on his twitter feed, what are the

people that work with him saying about him? what was he like at work? >> he was fairly well known, i had a chance over the years to interact with him several times. i never found him to be quite as vulgar and jerky as he was on the twitter feed. sometimes we see twitter anonymity gives people license to be mean and vulgar. ultimately as we've seen, usually comes out in twitter anonymity is fleeting. he was fairly well respected and senior member of the president's personal national security staff. there was a lot of shock in the foreign policy feeding that this mystery tweeter turned out to be him. inside administration there's no sympathy for the man they felt betrayed their confidence and taunted them. he referred to himself as batman and taunted people to try to discover who he was. they finally did and severe price paid. >> his wife is described as a

well respected professional staffer on the republican side of the senate foreign relations committee. any comment from his wife? >> no, we haven't heard from her. there's no evidence that she was involved in this illicit activity. there's no evidence that even she was aware of it. but it does have implications for her because some of the stuff jofi joseph was tweeting was about the senate foreign relations committee and the staff she worked on. i don't think anyone has found anything to suggest that carolyn was involved in this. unfortunately, she's an unwitting victim of her husband's unfortunate actions. >> you got everyone talking with the exclusive report there. quite a story. thank you. >> thank you. >> and our first read team has interesting insight into the controversy over the health care rollout. they ask, quote, what has been the more significant disaster, the problems associated with the federal obama care website or the state of the republican party after the shutdown? while the obama administration is throwing every resource to

fix the rewebsite issue, is anyone inside the gop tryinging to prevent and all-out idealogical civil war from breaking out. facing backlash in his home state and major donors are backing away from him. a top staffer for mitt romney campaign, business leaders who i talk to, who supported senator lee will not support him, myself included. joining me now, mark murray, you touch on this today in first read which is interesting as you have more republicans criticizing the rollout of obama care. they were having the fake filibuster and other issues in holding up the government. >> it's almost as if the republicans, if the shutdown did not happen and they acted very gleefully about these problems with the obama care websites.

this is a legitimate story and this has potential to really put some major wrenches into the president's health care law, that it's viable. but we are seeing that they are trying to move heaven and earth to fix the problem. the question is can they fix it and in enough time. yesterday at the same time where there was so much attention on the health care website, we end up seeing john mccain holding a town hall in arizona in which he sparred with the ted cruz supporter, really great footage of that and shows there is this still divide in the republican party between the tea party and the nontea party and that doesn't seem to be a problem that's being fixed, at least right now. >> too your point in first read, you have the administration, obama administration looking at any and every way to fix the issue with the rollout over the health care website. but when it comes to the republican party, it's not clear if they are aligning themselves to fix their own internal

issues. >> i think that's right. we probably might not get any kind of change or any type of movement at all until after the 2014 midterms. you know, look, the last two weeks were very difficult on the republican party. we saw that poll after poll. there are two ways to look at this. on the one hand, this could have been a blip that all of a sudden the american public forgets about this in a month, month and a half and good news for republicans 2014 mid-terms is a very long way away. other wait to look at it, what happened with the government shutdown is a very big brand problem for republican party and makes them hoilding a very strong hand in 2014 mid-terms having a weak hand now. i don't think we know just yet but the gamble that a lot of republicans are making right now, the public will forget about it. let's move forward and have our plan and let's not try to capitalize on these website problems. >> thank you, mark. still ahead, the sentence?
