women. >> an early happy thanksgiving. if it's sunday, it's "meet the press." good monday morning, right now on "first look," a massive weather front. torrential rain and high winds have caused deaths in the midwest and headed east. more medicine and relief supplies arrive in the philippines. mountain etna lights up the sky and fire and ash. and lady gaga and rob ford. i'm veronica de la cruz. as we come on the air this morning at least six are dead. dozens more injured. a powerful line of storms stretched from missouri up through ohio.

the weather channel reports that 40 tornadoes hit sunday, many of the images are almost surreal and hearing stories of survivors beginning to pick up the pieces. >> this town will -- come together. we always do. we'll come back. come back. >> one of the hardest hit areas was north central illinois and jay gray is there from the city of washington. jay, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, veronica. good to talk to you. those six fatalities from this area of central illinois and there's concern that that number could climb as recovery teams continue to sift through this rubble and try to assess the full extent of the damage. the devastation is widespread and overwhelming.

>> within less than a minute, everything started collapsing inside the house. cracking and sputtering and it's light inside the house. >> reporter: at least six people are dead. dozens injured after a string of violent storms including 40 tornadoes or more ripped across eight states. central illinois took the most severe hit. >> and the wind started picking up. >> communities like washington and new mendone were for the first part wiped away. >> pretty bad as far as people not staying in their home. roofs are gong. the church steeple is gone. some damage on the inside and, yeah, i would say it's pretty bad. >> reporter: a path of splintered homes and communities leveled from the storm stretches from kentucky through michigan where more than 250,000 families were left without power.

though they understand. hundreds of families have lost a lot more. yeah, and the extent of that loss will be better known as soon as the sun rises here today. look, fema feels already on the ground here and across the region and white house says that the president continues to get updates on the situation. that's the latest live here in washington. i'm jay gray. back to you. >> jay, thank you. nbc meteorologist bill karins with where these storms are headed next. >> we've been tracking them all night doing damage through pennsylvania with power outages and they raced through new york city, the good news is that they have weakened about 99% compared to what they did yesterday. it wasn't with much fanfare that it went through new york city winds gusting 30 miles per hour. you can see they started about noon yesterday and these are just flyinging. i mean traveling highway speed. people had very little time to get safe places. it's actually amazing how strong

they were that we haven't had more fay facilities and watching new york city. storms just rolled through out on long island right now and just about all the severe weather is over with with these. the winds gusting to 31, jfk, still have gusty winds and rain up in new england especially about 7:00 a.m., providence, right across the mass pike of new hampshire and maine and 89:00 a.m. just everyone is clear in new england with the exception of maine and should clear up about noon. the damaging winds from this storm and all the destruction over the last 18 hours appears to be done. >> thank goodness for that. thanks, bill. the u.s. aincreasing its humanitarian aid to the philippines donating $10 million for a total of 37 million so far. newly released video shows the power as it it the coast. 3600 people were killed but survivors are getting help. >> it's still as crowded inside

american people. what is important about is it that is the american people are well served. >> 39 democrats broke ranks and voted friday for a republican plan to allow people to keep plans that have been canceled. embattled mayor ford was met with yells at a canadian football saturday. even though the canadian football league's commissioner asked him not to attend the game ford showed up wearing a blue toronto argonaut jersey with mayor ford stitched on the back. while some yelled nasty comments most cheered and even high-fived the mayor and he just seemed to be loving it. bitcoin gets a taste of reality today, the first of at least two hearings on capitol hill and many say it is just the beginning. tracie potts joins us live from

washington with details. >> reporter: it is interesting. this bitcoin is virtual money that's not manufactured or regulated by the government and that's the issue here today, veronica. the senate homeland security committee wants to look at not only what it is but what the potential scams are out there. tate and federal authorities are now concerned that with this virtual money available, that the semi anonymous transactions might be used for money laundering or drug transactions. ee sngsally it's digital money you use like cash and use it to send and purchase things online, not controlled by or made by the government. there's no central network that monitors it but the attraction is that the fees are lower. the concern here on capitol hill is whether it needs to be regular lated and how it needs to be regulated. there is a second hearing tomorrow with the senate banking committee. >> tracie potts, thanks.

self-promotion? >> a little bit but it's what's going on, of course, you have several governors both scott walker, chris chris if i in new jersey, bobby jindal saying we're outside the washington morass. so it's time for somebody who can show a track record of getting something done, sometimes in a bipartisan fashion. certainly chris christie in new jersey is staying this. so they're sort of capitalizing on the anti-washington feeling. you have three strong republican senators who have made some, you know, major media plays this year, marco rubio and rand paul and, of course, ted cruz who is taking a different tact saying we'll use our platform to show we're fighting against president obama's agenda and run strongly to the right to sort of capitalize on those anti-washington sentiments in that way and obviously you'll have two different camps competing next year certainly and going forward to 2016 in the primary to sort of position themselves. >> right, right, let's go ahead

and move on to liz cheney running for senate and come out strongly opposing day marriage but strongly supporting her sister's several union but only in private. how do you think this will play out in the primary? >> she's running a state and running strongly to the right again trying to capitalize on that tea party sentiment in wyoming and, you know, this is obviously now exploded into the public view. their own father dick cheney certainly broke with george bush during their time in office embracing his daughter and saying i don't have much of a problem with gay marriage. he's embraced his daughter's views and his sister is running for office and couching words obviously so this will play out. something the broader republican party is dealing with, of course, about how to expand their base, include more people as they look to broader national elections so this is something that the party is dealing with and this family.

and bring you rob ford who reveals he would like to be prime minister of canada someday. let's try to have fun on a monday. this is "way too early." good morning, everybody. brian slaktman, november the 18th. a very, very busy news day so we want to get you started right away and begin with irony. just over a week ago this was the headline. 2013 a tranquil year for tornadoes so far. that changed quickly yesterday when a series of deadly storms broke out all over the midwest. at this hour the death toll stands at 6. dozens more as you might imagine are injured. it struck from kentucky to missouri to ohio up into indiana and illinois. dr. greg forbes of the weather channel put a rough estimate at a possible 40 tornadoes across the country. >> those are
