it's either the fighting cheney clan or keep enzi. good tuesday morning, everybody. right now on "first look" after the storm moving forward and searching for survivors of those fierce midwest tornadoes. the dramatic 911 phone calls involving george zimmerman and his girlfriend. stocks on a tear as records continue to be shattered. toronto's mayor rob ford stripped by city council. monti python fans get ready for the dream of a lifetime. good morning i'm betty nguyen. we want to begin with breaking news overseas. two explosions have rocked the iranian embassy in beirut earlier today. at least 23 people were killed and 146 were wounded in the blast. iran's ambassador of not hurt

but the country's cultural attache was killed. no word on who or what caused the blast. syrian rebels have threatened to targ target bashir al assad's allies. these give you a sense of how random these twisters were even with winds of 190 miles per hour, you can see a clear path of destruction. outside trees are standing and cars remaining in parked spaces. those images were from washington, illinois. where nbc's jay gray is at the latest. >> reporter: an eerie silence settled across the strike zone but that is i len will soon give way to families returning to sift through the splintered remainder of their lives.

jay gray, nbc news, washington, illinois. well, with shouts of shame, toronto's scandal scarred mayor is stripped of most of his powers. he was caught on camera miming the act of drunk driving. later he charged across a crowded chamber knocking over a female. he later picked her up and apologized. he vowed revenge against anybody who voted against him. later he addressed drinking and drugs following his admission. >> i'm training every day. i haven't touched a drop of alcohol in three weeks. i don't do drugs. >> the last time you did drugs was? >> a year ago sometime. >> would it have been this incident with the crack >> probably, yes.

i don't know exactly when it was. >> and amid all this drama he now has his own reality tv show. of course he does. airing on canada's sun news network, during the premier episode he said he refuses to take a drug test. on the "today" show matt lauer has a one on one interview. with rob ford. george zimmerman is under arrest for assault. zimmerman's girlfriend called police on wednesday saying he pointed a shotgun at her. >> he just broke my glass table, you just broke my sunglasses an you put your gun in my freaking face. >> samantha can be heard pleading with zimmerman to leave her home. she told the dispatcher he had a shotgun, an ar-15 and two hand

guns. >> are you [ bleep ] me. he knows how to do this. >> zimmerman called 911 saying she has quote gone crazy on him. she told him she's pregnant with his child which she denied to authorities. >> i never pulled a firearm. i never displayed it. when i was packing it, i'm sure she saw it. i mean we keep it next to the bed. she broke the glass table because she threw something on it. i don't even know if it was mine or hers. >> monday's arrest is the latest woe for the former neighborhood watch volunteer. he and his estranged wife were involved in a domestic dispute in september. zimmerman was pulled over twice in the past few months for speeding. as you recall a jury acquitted him in july of the shooting death of 17-year-old trayvon martin. in washington there is fresh evidence of fallout from the bumpy rollout of obama care. president obama's approval rating has fallen to 42% in a

new poll. one of the lowest points of his presidency. that's down six points in just a month and 13 points since the start of his second term. mr. obama is taking a hit personally, more than half of americans say he isn't a strong leader and exactly half find him dishonest and untrustworthy. all of this harkens back to promises you can keep your health plan if you liked it and other problems with obama care. a law 57% of americans now oppose. i want to give an update on that rare and deadly strain of meningitis at princeton university. this morning the school said it will make a vaccine available on campus. it has not been officially approved in the u.s. for use. the university said it's a move to stop the spread of the disease. seven cases have been confirmed since march. now let's get the latest in sports from richard lui.

. now here's your "first look" at this morning's dish of scrambled politics. for the third time senate republicans blocked a judicial appointment from president obama. this time it was the nomination of robert wilkins to serve on the d.c. supreme court. the president railed against the move saying once again the senate is refusing to do their job. john edwards, remember him? he's returning to the job where he was thrust into the public spotlight and made a fortune practicing law.

he is starting a new law firm along with his daughter kate. his political career was derailed by a sex scandal back during his 2008 campaign. a bill in michigan says it's time to cut the cord. it aims to eliminate land line phone service by 2017. the number of land line users in the state has dropped from 7 million in 2000 to just 2.5 million last year. education secretary arnie duncan regrets what he calls clumsy phrasing. on monday politico reported he said quote it's fascinating to me that some of the push back is coming from sort of white suburban moms who all of a sudden their child isn't as brilliant as they thought they were. he was referring to the critics of common core state standards being implemented in 45 states and d.c. the white house is staying mum on the conspiracy theory on the death of jfk. jay carney didn't say if

president obama believed harvey oswald acted alone. secretary of state john kerry said recently he believed oswald had help. and talk about bragging rights, arizona congresswoman kristin sinema finished an "iron man" competition. she's the first sitting member of congress to complete the event. congratulations. that is your morning dish of scrambled politics. right now we want to dig a little bit deeper into these presidential poll numbers. good morning to you. >> good morning. i hope you're having a better week than the president. >> these numbers some of the worst that he's seen in a long time. is obama care what's derailing this and is that going to be his defining issue? >> we don't cho the defining part yes but certainly what tissue is right now. you can understand. americans have gotten all the bad stuff, right? the frustration. >> the confusing stuff.
