an underwater volcano creates a new island off tokyo japan. the japanese coast guard caught this video of heavy smoke and steam billowing over the newly formed piece of land and it's officially certified as an island. japan's territory waters are expected to expand. that i think is so cool because you read about how land is formed. and to see it is amazing. >> that's how all the land was formed. just a rumor. >> and you would know. >> i wasn't here. today there are two stories out there. one, it's getting colder in many spots. winter weather in the rockies. snowing right now in denver. it's about 23 degrees and light snow. and that is sticking to the ground at those temperatures. so colorado, wyoming, new mexico getting some of that snow. maybe even you'll have to shovel in the higher elevations. for the key ski resort, you'll the next couple days.

an afghan ground council for approval today. this after a senior aide to karzai claimed no agreement would be approved without an apology from the u.s.. kerry has denied any discussion of an american apology. president obama awarded 16 people the presidential medal of freedom on wednesday, including former president bill clinton and oprah winfrey. the award which is the country and he highest civilian honor was established by president can kennedy. speaking of the kennedys, a kennedy kuz sip is expected to be released from prison after being granted a new trial in the killing of his 15-year-old neighbor. he has been serving a 20 years to life sentence since 2002. today three women are graduating from the marine corps's enlisted infantry training course for the very first time. they were in a group that matched the same standards as the men as the military prepares to open up combat jobs to women. congrats to them. harvard researchers tracked 119,000 men and women over a 30

after pleading guilty to cocaine possession. in his press conference, he was contrite, he spoke of the gs seize of addiction and he says he'll be donating his salary to charity. so what are your thoughts about how he's handled this so far? >> first of all, we have to point out he's already a recovering tv anchor person and you know what an obstacle that can be to life. >> no comment. >> but beyond that, he's certainly been straightforward or he seems to have been. now whether that was on the advice of counsel or his public affairs people, whatever, he's certainly not tried to hide the problem and apparently he probably is going to get shaome points for that. >> let's talk about the nuclear option in the senate. should harry reid move forward on forcing votes? >> it sounds like they're going to. republicans are accused of totally violating the spirit of the ability to veto presidential appoints in effect with the

advise and concept options. senate democrats are saying enough is enough. however the problem is if the republicans become the majority party in the senate, then there will be the same problem for the democrats. >> shifting gears to the anniversary of john f. kennedy's assassinati assassination. as we look back at everything that has happened in our nation since then, how would you say politics have changed in the last 50 years? >> i think it's fairly clear that things have gotten continuously worse. there is the old saying cheer up they said things could be worse, so i it and thit sure enough th. we've had a downhill slide in politics to the point that politicians right down there with the most evil people when it comes to public disapproval. >> and so a lot of people position of the golden era of politics where people could compromise and get along. is that just nostalgia speaking or was there a time where things worked a lot better?
