arrested. they're facing charges of kidnapping along with emotional and physical abuse. the stepfather is also accused of one count of sexual abuse. officials say the girls were found malnourished and dirty, and listen to this, they even told officers they hadn't taken a bath in up to six months and that they were imprisoned in their home for possibly the past two years. the two younger girls were able to escape tuesday. police found the third locked inside the home. let's get to you that travel nightmare that we have been telling you about all week. well, it's now turning into a reality. today is the busiest travel day of the year and that monster thanksgiving storm is threatening so many plans. watches and warnings, they are posted in at least 20 states up and down the east coast. for the latest nbc meteorologist bill karens is here with a look at all of that. >> good morning to you. usually you want to wake up early and get on the roads and beat the traffic and the rush hour. this sent one of those times. the later you can drive today, the better off you'll be, and

the storm will be exiting. right now the worst of it, new york city to connecticut, it is windy and pouring rain in southern new england. all the way to massachusetts and boston. even down there in west virginia where you still have light snow, and now washington d.c. is cooler at 40 degrees with just light rain. we watched it, and got snow as far south here as georgia. atlanta, your airport problems maybe a little here in the morning, and then the storm is gone for much of the day. then also heavier rain many south florida and possible delays. as far as the airports go today, the d.c. airport just about the next couple of hours, new york city and boston, throughout the afternoon and the evening, significant delays. especially this morning, but the good news is as we go through about 5:00 p.m., all the worst of the wind and rain is gun. even in the boston area. new york will clear up by about 10:00 a.m. when i say clear, i don't mean, like, sunny, but the worst of the wind will be gone.

further north in michigan a sheet of ice led to a multi-vehicle accident near flint closing i-75 for several hours. near white hall a dashboard cam caught this truck jackknifed in a already stocked car. near roanoke, virginia, drivers were met with ice a quarter inch thick. while on long island in new york, trooper frank bemdario has seen this before. a holiday rush and treacherous roads. >> it's just going to be twice as congested, i would assume, and then factor in the weather and the flooding. it's probably going to create a lot of traffic and very slow going. >> we want to thank our tom costello for that report. when you finally get to your destination after you have had all that turkey, then comes, of course, the shopping. some stores taking the unprecedented step to open thanksgiving night, but many americans aren't taking the bait. tracie potts aren't taking that for us. she's live in washington.

just how are businesses trying to get people into their stores thanksgiving evening? >> well, betty, they're opening, and they're opening earlier than they even did last year. even though just over half of americans say in this latest survey that, yes, they'll get out at some point this weekend and shop, more people than last year plan to stay home. >> reporter: despite the campers and they started last week, fewer americans plan to shop this weekend compared to last year. >> i don't shop on thanksgiving. i dedicate that to family. >> reporter: many large retailers plan to open on thanksgiving day. macy's, target, and sears, along with wal-mart, as early as 8:00 p.m. trying to get a jump on this yoer's shopping season. it's one week shorter this year. >> you're not going to get the intensity you have on black friday, so they actually might be diluting themselves more by creating this. >> reporter: in a new deloitte survey half say they'll shop on-line. only one in eight plan to hit the stores on thanksgiving day.

that's down 10% from last year. on black friday six in ten say they'll avoid crowded stores. that's up from last year. the lack of interest may be linked consumer confidence which just hit a seven-month low, but retailers are counting on super shoppers like tracy phillips to boost their bottom line. >> i will be spending about $3,000 and saving about $2,500. >> reporter: like many consumers she's starting this weekend. >> betty, the survey says a lot of consumers are doing their homework now on-line before they go to the stores or even with mobile devices while they're in the stores, so oftentimes a customer will be walking in and see an item they like, look it up on their phones, see that it's cheaper somewhere else, and walk right out. >> i am so guilty of that. i just did that the other day, in fact, shopping for a television. i do some homework on-line.
