above water. caught on camera, overboard! a catastrophic collision just off the coast of italy leaves about 4200 passengers and crew on this luxury liner fearing for their lives. january 2012 about 9:30 at night on friday the 13th when the captain of the costa concordia steers his ship off course, slamming into giant rocks. nowly weds david and denise from miami are sitting down for dinner just two hours into their honeymoon cruise. >> we only got to take one bite

when we felt it crash. there were people going crazy. i looked back and i saw chairs and tables and all the plates were falling down and all the glasses. the waiters and waitresses were screaming and crying. >> just everything was chaos. people were running and little children. they had no idea what was going on. we didn't really have any idea. they were telling us. >> your attention please. there has been an electrical --. at this point the situation is under control. >> this crew member told a frightened crowd everything is okay.

>> they were saying that it was under control and we started to wander around the ship. we went to the deck to see what it locked like from outside. i filmed. >> soon it becomes obvious that things are not under control. just before 11:00, an alarm sounds to evacuate. persons gather and wait. >> we waited for about a half hour. people were anxious to get into the life rest. >> from the deck, the passengers can see the ship is leaning over them. >> i was afraid to get into the life raft because the cruise ship continued to tilt. my fear is the cruise ship would collapse on top of us. >> in almost total darkness, their life boats leans violently

lurking sharks and giant waves. waves that crash into the cave and explode on to the clips above. january 25th, 1993 in the heart of the winter vacation season. local tv producer follows the sound of silence to the cave and takes his camera out to record the scene. >> it's treacherous. the rocks alone are razor sharp. >> he quickly learns a tourist who was sightseeing and posing for pictures has been knocked off the cliff by a rogue wave. a rescue is under way to save the man trapped in the cave. >> he was trapped in the cave and too scared to come out. quite frankly we thought the poor guy was going to drown. >> a crowd gathers. the situation looks grim. no one is sure the trapped

tourist is still alive. >> we were yelling down below. you can hear us? are you okay? can you hear us? yell back at us. no answer. we all assumed the guy was dead. >> from the same spot he was swept off, waves continue to smash over the rocks putting everyone at risk. alexander appears for the first time in a desperate attempt to reach a boat. >> that gave us a lot of hope. we knew he was alive. >> he mistimes the exit and swims into an avalanche of water. >> the next set watched him back in. >> it's a devastating defeat as she swallowed back into the cave and trapped in the pool of water and foam.

>> lifeguards rush to the scene. they are trained on to combat the waves, but have never had to fight anything like this before. to attempt the rescue it takes two guys. one to drive and to swim. they know one mistake can mean smashing into the shark rocks and becoming victims themselves. as high tide approaches, they do their best to time it between the swells and get closer to grab alexander. watch how he's at the mercy of the sea. >> they had to shootout and weight for the next before they could come back in. this went on for what seemed like an eternity.

an amphibious duck boat is full of persons and anchored in the river. it's supposed to be a fun 15-minute sightseeing loop on land and water when things go terribly wrong. everyone on board watches as this huge barge maintains a steady course directly at them until it blasts over their boat. tourists in philadelphia looking to see the city from a different vantage point get on board the right the ducks duck boat.

something this tall is mowing us over in the river. >> only a few minutes go by before kevin, his daughter ruby and everyone else on board realized the inevitable. >> we started grabbing for life reservers and my poor daughter didn't have any idea. so, i did the best i could to get us to where we have a chance. i look up and i see the first mate was jumped off the boat and swimming for it. my gosh. >> kevin and ruby don't have time to put on a life jacket. the barge slams into the duck boat as if swallowing them whole. >> people are screaming, barking

orders at each other and people were wimpering and crying and panicking and it's sheer terror. >> terror combined with the sound that kevin will never forget. >> the screeching of the metal. i never heard a sound like that. just metal screeching against metal. you got dumped into the water. there was a lot of people under water. it was like in a coke bottle and being shaken up with a bunch of stuff inside of it. >> with kevin and ruby overboard, kevin is determined not to lose his daughter. >> i just grabbed as much hair as i could. i knew i could grip her hair and

keep her near me. i knew that way we would be together when we died. >> kevin said he and ruby are pushed deep under the water. >> we came up and the barge was not on top of us, it was truly an unbelievable experience. it was as if we were swept aside in the river. that happened to all of these people. i couldn't believe the people around us. the boat was gone. >> kevin and ruby's ordeal is not over. almost immediately they get sucked under the water for a second time. >> this time i didn't have ruby's hair. i popped up and looked around and she wasn't there yet. i guess i started panicking, where is she? where is she? she popped up.

>> they swim for their lives. >> i was very, very proud of her. what a great kid. she swam very confidently. she didn't leave me there at that point. >> we have people in the water and looks like they got run over by a barge in the duck boat. >> the crash claims the lives of two hungarian students. but somehow, 35 people are pulled to safety. many need medical attention including ruby who suffers from shock. in philadelphia, the mayor holds a press conference. >> this is a very serious situation. we are going to do everything we can to obviously get to the bottom of it. >> investigators at the national transportation safety board

issue a press release and determine the tugboat operator towing the barge hit the tugboat because of distractions from a cell phone and computer to deal with a family emergency. during the minutes leading up to the crash. he left his poet in the tugboat and his vision of anything in front of him was obscured by the barge. he pleads guilty to one count of misconduct resulting in death and sentenced to a year and a day in prison. the duck's president defends the captain of the duck boat who he said followed protocol. >> our captain followed all of his training and coast guard training and all of the regulations required of a captain in that situation. >> nearly two years after the incident, a civil lawsuit filed by the victims and families results in a $17 million
