state. chicago they have already seen a foot in some spots and poised to see another 6 inches as lake-effect snow kicks in, as well. crews from kansas to erie, pennsylvania already has their hands full clearing massive drifts of snow, creating big trouble at the airports, as well. according to flight aware, almost 950 flights were canceled yesterday. nearly as many already canceled today, so call, check on dwlt line, do whatever you have to you travel. parts of new york predicted to gets a much of a foot and a half. even new york city could get swamped and it would be mayor de blas blasio's first test on the job. boston preemptively declaring a snow emergency today, canceling school on friday. let's go over to bill karins. it seems less of a big deal earlier in the week and now a pretty big deal. >> it's because of the korld. if it was just the snow alone, i

think we could deal with it. some people don't have school, some going back. kind of a mixed bag. the problem is that it's so cold that the treatments on the roads won't be as effective and the fact that we'll have to clear i'd walks and driveways and cars in windchills below zero, that will be something we haven't done in a while in many areas of new england and the ohio valley. let's start with it this morning, heaviest snow elected over indianapolis. light fluffy snow, but again, it doesn't get treated as well and if there is any wind, it will blow right back on to the roads. so that is expanding in to ohio. eventually as the snow continues in to new england, that's where it will pile up the most. right now the storm affecting the ohio valley will eventually come off the coast and turn into our nor'easter type storm and that will produce blizzard conditions for areas like cape cod, possibly back into boston, providence, and areas of eastern long island. the highest snow totals will be where it's already snowing this morning from albany, new york,
2:33 am
higher terrain there, down the mass pike up in to areas of southern vermont and new hampshire because you'll get the one-two punch. snow today and then you get the nor'easter snow on top of it tonight into tomorrow morning. by the way that's the worst driving conditions for areas around new york city and all through new england. and it is this time tomorrow morning, and you are not going to want to be on the roads. so these are some of the brief snow totals in my snow map. chicago has already had 6 inches. 6 to 10 for you, cleveland. yiches you're g indianapolis you're getting your heavier now. just starting to snow this boston. about a foot or so by the time you're done. but light and fluffy, blowing all over the place. new york city, i have about 4 to 6. long island could see 8 to 12 where western jersey may only see around 4 to maybe even about inches there. so a big spread across the new york area. but you can see even philadelphia is getting in to the mix today. excuse me, tonight into tomorrow
