good monday morning. right now on "first look" polar vortex. life threatening, dangerously cold weather is descending across much of the u.s. today. record-setting cold could last the week. people in many locations are told to remain indoors to avoid the temperatures that could lead to hypothermia and frostbite. aspen crash. and football frenzy. the wild card winners as fans brave everything that mother nature could throw at them. good morning, i'm veronica de la cruz. it hasn't been this cold for almost two decades.

32 below zero at fargo, north dakota. minus 21 at madison, wisconsin. 15 below at chicago, minneapolis and indianapolis. the mayor has raised travel warning to red making it illegal to be on the road except for emergencies or seeking shelter. sarah dolloff is braving the temperatures. the temperature is one thing but the wind chill could drop to 50 below? >> wind chill, veronica, is where the weather is going to get you. it will get you fast. hypothermia and frostbite setting in within minutes. people here haven't seen this type of cold in decades. now officials are warning that the conditions are not only dangerous, they are potentially deadly. >> a bitterly cold wakeup for millions this morning as an arctic front causes temperatures to drop to record lows. 30 to 50 degrees below average

in the midwest. 25 states with thermometers sitting below 0. in indiana up to two inches of snow fell every hour. the mayor of indianapolis warning people to stay indoors. >> we have temperatures deadly. >> in st. louis, snow and winds made it nearly impossible to see. >> pay attention to your neighbors. see what they need. take care of them. >> reporter: schools are closed in chicago where a half foot of snow is expected and in minnesota, a first public school closure there in nearly two decades. officials are pleading with people to stay off the streets. already there have been problems from black ice covered roads in maryland and pennsylvania. >> it's a sheet of ice. cars are just spinning out. >> reporter: to the runways in new york where a plane slid into snow on jfk on sunday. officials are expressing great concern about the elderly and

homeless saying frostbite can happen within minutes of exposure. cities have emergency workers on stand by and outreach teams on the street to help people find shelter. >> what people can do, houses, temporary rehab, the back of a medic rig. >> it's assistance that may prove life saving as the brutal winter weather gets even more extreme. >> reporter: and forecasters say the weather won't warm up until late this week. until then officials say stay inside. >> sarah, thank you. for more here's nbc meteorologist, bill karins. sarah looked really cold. >> get her inside and get her warm. ten minutes they're saying. if the wind chill is 25 or below, 10 minutes is how long it takes your flesh to freeze. this is a massive cold outbreak. the biggest since '96. we had a big one in '94. this will rival that. it's dipped to the gulf and will

move to the east coast. we have a lot of record lows. the wind chill is dangerous. blue is wind chill warnings and purple is wind chill advisories. all the way down to florida we have wind chill advisories and warnings. we're looking at 27 states with warnings, 34 with warnings or advisories. the wind chill's the lowest of course in the northern plains sweeping into the ohio valley. it's a wind chill of 1 in dallas. the lowest i could find was langdon, north dakota, was minus 56. deluth, minus 55. that cold air is heading your way. it won't be as bad, but big changes for you today. >> tomorrow we're in for it tomorrow. >> tomorrow morning is when you'll feel it and be like oh, boy. >> oh, boy. thanks, bill. moving to breaking news that is sure to dominate political headlines.

nbc news confirming that liz cheney, the eldest daughter, will drop her bid to represent wyoming in the senate. her upstart campaign challenging a fellow republican never got much traction. she suffered a series of initial set backs including labeled as a carpet bagger. and a public spat made national headlines. her exit clears the way for mike enzy to win a fourth term. wyoming has not elected a democrat to the senate since 1970. new overnight, the 13-year-old girl declared brain dead after a tonsillectomy is out of the hospital and in her mother's custody. >> jahi mcmath has been taken from children's hospital and has been brought to a place where they will use her name and where she can get to the starting line instead of where children's has left her at the finish line. >> while the family's would not

reveal where jahi is headed, the place will allow her to have procedures done as soon as possible. one of those procedures could be to fit her with a feeding tube. the hospital argues that jahi's brain injury says she is brain dead. first in aspen, colorado, where the pilot of a small private plane was killed after his jet crashed on the runway. two other people were on board, also pilots, and they were injured. the cause remains under investigation. at least two celebrities were at the airport and saw it all happen including country singer leanne rhymes who witnessed the crash and kevin nealan saw it. the boeing 767 carrying 215 passengers was on its way from san francisco to new york. it was diverted to kansas city

after it was disguised as a flash drive found inside a bathroom. a preliminary inspection shows it was a camera. the fbi is investigating. everyone is okay after a delta jet skidded off the runway at jfk airport early sunday. flight 4100 had just lanted from toronto when it slipped off the tarmac. it prompted the airport's closure but it has since reopened. the baseball world is mourning the death of a legendary player and broadcasting icon. jerry coleman died after a brief illness. he helped the bronx bombers to four world series titles. his playing career was put on hold during world war ii. perhaps coleman will best be remembered as the voice of the san diego padres. he served as the team's radio announcer for more than four decades.

some stories making news this morning. iraqi troops are battling for two key cities. fallujah and ramadi. at least 34 people were killed in fighting on friday. u.s. secretary of state john kerry said they would help. dennis rodman has arrived in pyongyang with a dozen basketball stars to be played on north korean leader kim jong-un's birthday. he calls the trip basketball diplomacy. and we learned over the weekend that 50s and 60s rock icon phil everly died on friday. they sang such hits as "wake up little susie ", "bye-bye love," and "all i have to do is dream." two republicans publicly attacking one another. we'll have details next. could this martial arts

some disincentive to work. >> i think it's a little insulting, a bit insulting to american workers when rand paul says that unemployment insurance is a disservice. they want to work. >> republican senator ron johnson is planning to sue the obama administration over obamacare. it gives lawmakers special treatment when it comes to offsetting health insurance plans. >> and it's probably not the retirement that he had in mind. he's now selling lazy boy recliners earning $8 an hour. he's getting commission. that's going to do it for your morning dish of scrambled politics. joining me for our first look at politics is david nakumura. >> hi, veronica. >> big day in washington as congress gets back to work.

let's go ahead and look at their to do list. there's quite a to do list obviously. let's start with the extension of unemployment benefits. what do you think? >> absolutely. that's going to be the first thing as you mentioned in your segment leading up to this. the big test for the democrats is to find the extra five votes. this is the democrats having support from the white house. the president will get out there on tuesday and he'll make a public statement with foejts at the white house who benefit from this. this will put a lot of pressure on republicans. that will be number one. a km of other things congress needs to do. more appropriation spending bills. that would detail how much each agency will get. looking ahead, they've pledged to get by that this time. looking farther, there's a few other things like immigration, bigger things that have been trouble in the past that some

people still think may be able to get done in this congress. obviously there's the election this year so they don't know what's going to happen. these are sort of the items they have to come through in the next few weeks. >> right. they definitely have a full plate. keeping that in mind, what does the president -- how does he factor in all of this? what are his priorities? >> well, as we mentioned, he's going to come back. he's been dealing with a number of things even on vacation in hawaii. he's been dealing with this national security agency and the spy plan. how he might change that program has come under scrutiny both from democrats and republicans who think the government needs to scale this back. he's going to be giving a speech on that. the white house wants to deal with minimum wage issues and try to raise the minimum wage. the president will be working on his state of the union address

for february. the president has a number of things he's going to get to. >> quickly, david, wanted to ask you about liz cheney abandoning her senate bid. a surprise when she announced she was going to run. now she's announcing she's dropping out. what happened? >> we can only speculate. she was having trouble getting traction but also with her own family. obvious lit the gay rights issue which she has not supported and her sister is guy. it would be the pressures from internally and the uphill battle she faced in the senate race forced her to decide to resign and not keep running. >> david nakimura with the washington post. happy new year. >> yeah, you too. >> coming up, bill karins and betty nguyen will join us with "first buzz." coming up, a case of being
