pricetag for making sure that species doesn't spread. just a typical tuesday on "way too early". ♪ good morning, everybody. tuesday, january 7th. the indianapolis colts, they signed an expatriots receiver for some gamesmanship as they head into the nfl playoffs this weekend. to make it more interesting, we'll have that story. here's a trivia question for you. name a real estate market more expensive than new york. we'll have the answer in business in about five minutes. we have to start with this weather. it's unreal. freezing temperatures affecting merely 190 million americans. it is being called a polar vortex and sending temperatures plummeting to the lowest levels in decades all over the country. new york city was 55 degrees yesterday and fell to 9 degrees

overnight. but that pales in comparison to parts of minnesota and north dakota where temperatures are touching 30 and even 50 below. >> firefighters were hampered by a wind chill of 55 degrees below zero. water was turning into ice crystals before it could reach the fire at the top of the structure. >> streets are just simply empty in some parts of the country. here's a shot of ft. wayne, indiana. in chicago, illinois, where temperatures dipped to minus 15, it's colder than siberia or the south pole. it's not a joke. hundreds of planes have been grounded at o'hare where american airlines says it's so cool the fuel lines froze. even north georgia fell to 16 below whether you factor in the wind chill. the weather channel's julie martin joins us from atlanta. julie? >> it is not very often you have to dress like this to step out the door in atlanta, georgia. in fact this morning we did hit

a daily record low of 9 degrees. the wind chill minus 8. if we get to 6 degrees that, will be the coldest we've seen it here in atlanta in about 18 years. so definitely feeling the chill. schools are canceled for a second day. everyone is asked to stay home and keep the heat running. georgia road crews are treating for black ice as well. the temperatures here in the south have plummeted. in fact a good 20 to in some cases 40 degrees overnight reaching all the way down to about tampa, florida. that's where the freezing line is this morning. for t the crops should be protected there. talking about the east as well, temperatures there have dropped even more. in fact in, some cases as much as 50 degrees in just a matter of a day. jetblue cancelling operations in and out of new york and boston as a result, trying to give their workers a break from this relentless deep freeze. and in places like indiana, the

governor there issued states of emergency and asked everyone stay off the roads. this arctic chill going to continue to grip the country for another couple of days. in fact, here in atlanta, it will be thursday before we are above freezing. but still relying in all of this for the southerners here by the weekend we're looking at a balmy 60 degrees. back to you. >> parts of canada are as cold as mars right now. let's go to bill karins. people following you on twitter, in some parts of the country there is a 70-degree drop in wind chill. >> the wind chill is minus 12 in new york city right now, 69 degrees in drop. >> then there is snow. >> the really daefrpg us are stuff is the cold. when you mix the cold over the warm, not ice frozen yet like lake erie and ontario, we have the crazy snow bands. we've had blizzard conditions in

buffalo, new york, for the last 12 to 18 hours. the snow band south of watertown is producing lightning strikes and two inch anz hour. advised to stay off interstate 80 south of watertown and south of buffalo. those are two of most dangerous commutes this morning. as far as the coal goes, it covers the eastern half of the country. it pushed in the east coast. the wind chills the get your attention. the southeast as we saw with julie dune, there minus 8 wind chill in atlanta does not happen that often. the wind chill in orlando is 29. thinking you're on vacation down there, you're not get ago way with it this week. as far as the wind chills in minneapolis, minus 50, today, minus 28. a slow improvement there as we begin to get warmer. as far as when does the big warmup begin, as we go through friday and especially over the weekend, the entire southern half of the country warms up significantly. then we're back to normal conditions for the northern plains and northeast. we're going to get there but

because of flight delays due to the polar vortex. senator john corn inbelieves the real reason for the desleigh because democrats are still searching for the votes, calling the delay a transparent political exercise. republicans say they're not against the bill but are looking to offset the benefits with spending cuts. but the director of the white house economic council says the president wants the bill passed with no strings attached. president obama has reportedly hit the phones on this one to reach out to republicans and will speak about the bill after the senate vote later this morning. the supreme court has ordered that same-sex marriages be put on hold in the state of utah. the state is appealing a federal judge's ruling that it's ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional. the ruling means marriage licenses will no longer be issued to same-sex couples right now, at least until the appeal is completed. more than 900 same sex couples said i do in the last two weeks in utah. they're now left wondering what the ruling means for them.

>> there's no precedence, i believe, for this. and this is precise lit uncertainty we were hoping to avoid by requesting a stay immediately upon the decision of the district court. it's unfortunate that many utah citizens have been put into this legal limbo. but we're evaluating their legal status currently. >> same sex marriage is legal in 17 states and washington, d.c. it's wait and see whether rahm emanuel will appeal a federal judge's ruling that overturned the city's ban on gun sales. the judge outlawed licensed gun stores from operating within city limit. the city has seen the laws the toughest in the country stripped away. back in 2010 the u.s. supreme court struck down chicago's gun ban yet crime stats are falling. ? 2012 they had more homicides than any city in the nation but

saw a 16% drop last year. let's go to business now. all three major indices down yesterday. the s & p posting a loss for the third consecutive session. not a great start to the year tore stocks. but in washington, the senate made janet yellen one of the most powerful women in the world confirming her as the next head of the federal reserve. she got a lot to handle. she has to unwind all this stimulus and still dealing with 7% unemployment. >> yeah, absolutely. but there are plenty of people in the market who think she is a safe pair of hands, brian. as you know, she is seen as quite dubbish on the interest rate story. she was a supporter of ben bernanke's decision to go with this $75 billion worth of bond buying every month. so very much many the same vain as ben bernanke. so no change really as far as the markets are concerned. but it is interesting when it came to the votes, 56 in favor,

26 against. and she wasn't the first choice, it seems but she has been confirmed. so that's the important bit of news. let's move you on. fascinating to look at the trends in the economy and microsoft putting out a $3 million sale number for the x box 1 here. we know this was an important device for the company. it's interesting that they appear to be running ahead of sales for the ps 4 at this stage. of course the big inner is amd with sales chips for both of these boxes. i guess they're ultimately the big winner. >> it's funny, when microsoft first got into the hardware business people criticized them now it's the best product that they have. obviously we have a little bit of a competition in a lot of areas between new york and london. right now london is kind of winning when it comes to real estate. >> yeah, i think we have the

bragging rights on this one, brian. we got this association of foreign real estate investors who effectively said that london knocks new york from the top spot for the year here. new york comes in second. we have a couple of u.s. cities that come in three and four. i think houston was on the list here. as i look down my list, san francisco took the third spot. and no great surprise, i guess, because according to some surveys, we saw nearly 15% upside in the final quarter of 2013 in london property and obviously this agency feels that we're going to get strong gains again in 2014. so money to be made it would seem in london. >> you should sell and come over here. come hang out with us. all right, appreciate it. some other news to get to, jihad jane is sentenced to ten years behind bars. a federal judge sentenced her yesterday in pennsylvania. she was part of a failed plot to kill a swedish art whoiist who

everywhere watched the nfl wild card weekend. 31 million viewers tuned into the saturday doubleheader, that is the most since the nfl switched to this play-off format in 1990. the big numbers though, on sunday. the early game also had about 31 million viewers. more than 47 million people watched the late game between the niners and packers. that's a 20% jump from last year. this is the nfl which is watched more than any other sport in this country. it's the single highest rated wild card game since 1988. not to tell you that 90 was my freshman year in college. i love this story, more nfl news in a move most are calling bill belichick ian. they signed deian brant before they meet in the play-off game. he last played in 2012. he spent seven seasons with the

one of my favorite sounds smarts to day. we talked about the polar vortex. if you want to sound smart, tell your friends in some areas of the u.s. ice removal crews have been turning to beet juice because of the arctic temperatures. beet juice freezes at a lower temperature and improves the effectiveness of the salt. it is pretty cool because you never knew it. this will be used on major roads and hills because it's four times more expensive than
