2:03 pm
forget it. everybody is on your own. republican party, i think this ideology is catching up with them. republicans know blocking unemployment insurance extension not popular with the american people. well, actually it is. that's what they say in caucus. we'll get by. we'll be okay. let's stick with our ideology. not the case. 55% of americans say that they want an unemployment extension. only 34% of americans say they want this whole thing to end or think like rush. republicans know that they are losing the battle. so here comes the playbook to stop all the bleeding. the house republican conference put out a coaching memo for members so they know how to talk about unemployment. let's see. they have a pattern of doing this. we've had a playbook on how to talk about it to women. we've had a playbook on how to talk about immigration reform.
2:04 pm
now we have a playbook from the republicans on how to be compassionate when it comes to unemployment benefits. it tells republicans to address job loss as a personal crisis for the person in their family. how touching. the memo pushes the point saying washington has lost its priorities if it is more focused on making unemployment easier to tolerate than it is getting people back to work and restoring independence all together. independence, this is what it's all about. giving people an opportunity to access something they have paid into their entire career and dip into it when they fall into hard times. finally the playbook says if the democrats can produce a fiscally responsible plan, the house is going to consider it. how nice of boehner. i think the worm is starting to
2:05 pm
turn. they are defensive. they don't know how to handle this. they know public opinion is against them. a number of republicans are starting to say, i went home and heard stuff i'm not used to hearing. one of them is senator heller. he sounded a heck of a lot more like a democrat than a republican when asked about unemployment. >> don't get me wrong, i think this thing ought to be paid for. i'm going to support this legislation anyway, because i think it is the right thing to do. go home and talk to some of these people that need this unemployment insurance. these are people actively looking for a job. let's make sure they can stay in their homes and put food on their table for their children. >> did i hear that right?
2:06 pm
that's some coaching for you right there. the senator from nevada said he would encourage his colleagues to get out of the beltway and go home and listen to some of the constituents because they are hard working americans. gosh, he sounded like a democrat. he's not. he's a conservative that knows what's at stake. three senators said they want to cut some stuff to offset the cost of all it. they need to take a page of senator heller's playbook and cut to the chase. it'll be interesting to see if these colleagues go to the floor to talk about the unemployment. i want to hear the audio. i want to hear these folks go to the floor and make the case.
2:07 pm
they won't do it. don't bank on it, folks. it is a lot easier just to cast a vote. but when you have to stand up and talk about it, it's a little different world, isn't it? these senators need to put the pressure on john boehner and bring heller's extension up for a vote. boehner has got to be sitting over there saying, geez, they're putting it all on me. we have to be a team on this deal. of course that's what he's saying. the senators need to throw this number in boehner's face every day. john boehner is a major obstacle right now in the unemployment extension effort, but i'm not convinced he's the only obstacle. you can't trust the republicans.
2:08 pm
there were six republicans who voted yesterday to move the debate forward. when it comes time for them to stand up, they want more cuts. they're just like the rest of the crowd. the good news is the republicans are on the defense. they feel compelled they have to come up with special talking points to explain their position. here's the position they're in. they can't fake empathy. humans can't fake empathy. you either care about something or you don't. let me emphatically saying that the republicans have had a track record of not caring about health care. they have a track record of not caring about workers and wages and collective bargaining and unions. they have a track record of not caring about public education because we spend way too much money on that. now they have a track record of saying we're not really that concerned about unemployment. that's president obama's fault
2:09 pm
because he hasn't figured out this economy. liberals, don't let them off the hook. this is worth fighting for. this is a story that will not go away. we cannot let this story go away because it will expose exactly who they are and put them on the defensive all the way to the midterms. i want to know what you think. tonight's question -- do you think unemployment insurance is a disincentive to get a job? text a for yes. text b for no. you can go to our blog and leave a comment there. the audio that's coming from the republicans in the senate and over in the house when it comes to unemployment, it is different from the audio we have heard from mrs. hackett yesterday who was talking about what it is like to put gas in your car or

heat your house or wear a coat in your home so you can turn down the thermostat. i think the president was spot on when he suggested some of the lawmakers give up their checks and see what it's like. one of the lawmakers did just that. we'll that later on this in the program. >> good to be with you as always. >> you bet. it doesn't seem like it's going to come all down to boehner. there are these six senators who are starting to balk. they want cuts too. >> senator reid wants a 90-day extension while we talk about what can be done on a longer term. 90 days to make sure these 1.3 million people, which 20,000 are veterans, unpaid for.
2:11 pm
why? because it's an emergency. why? because stimulating on the one hand and depressing on the other, the economy doesn't make sense. we'll talk about that. but right now, we need to pass immediately an extension where we'll get these 1.3 million people with some sustenance. >> is he tone deaf to this? >> i can't speak for what his thoughts are on that. i think that's lower than it is nationally. the majority of people in america and my state and district believe this unemployment insurance ought to be extended. they know how hard it is to find a job.
2:12 pm
they know the adverse consequences to real people that this has caused and the agony and pain that it is causing. they want to see us get this done. i hope the republicans will listen. just talking nicely, empathizing with people is not off. you've got to do something. >> are the democrats willing to do something budgetarily to make this happen? where would you find cuts? are you looking at any cuts to play ball with boehner on this? >> if the republicans want cuts, tell us what they are and we'll consider them. i absolutely agree with the majority leader when he says, we've got to get this done now. you saw murray and ryan talking about offsets. it's tough to find offsets when we've already reduced by over a

2:15 pm
we give them the opportunity to earn a wage that they can survive on in the richest country on the face of the ea h earth. that's the issue. 10.10 is a minimum. it's not a ceiling. it's not the maximum. it's not what we want people to aspire to. it is what we ought to do as a country to make sure there is a minimum. ed, in 1968, in 2013 dollars, the minimum wage today would be $10.20. >> i find senator rubio's comment very interesting. he admits to the people what they think doesn't matter. it polls well. that means what the people want. what the people want doesn't matter to the republican party. he indicts his philosophy right there in front of the microphone. i just think it polls well
2:16 pm
because that's what the people want, okay? and they're not willing to give the people what they want just like unemployment insurance is exactly what the people want. do you believe if it were brought to the floor in the house that the unemployment insurance would pass? >> yes, i do. >> okay. >> i don't think there'd be a democrat that would vote against it. i think there would certainly be enough republicans. we only need another 18 republicans to pass it. certainly there are 18 republicans that have the kind of compassion that is necessary to back up the talk that they're instructed to be. the empathy they're asked to display. >> thanks so much. remember to answer tonight's question there at the bottom of the screen. always want to know what you think. coming up, admitting the problem is half the battle.

that behavior. if you spend some time with this guy nick or with his friends on the town green in new haven each one of them has a plan back to employment. when you're filling out job applications and your address is the homeless shelter it's imto get an interview. these unemployment benefits that keep people from homelessness is the only thing that's allowing them to have a shot at a job and that's the true reality. >> you saw homeless people trying to get work. >> yes. we spent two hours in the basement of the new haven public library and every single one of those computers was taken. not every single one of them by somebody who is homeless but almost every one of them by people who were jobless and spending hours of their day filling out dozens of applications online. to tell the truth there's some people who are living in the shelter in new haven, connecticut who are working, who are working part time, temporary jobs that don't pay enough to

afford rent and mortgages. even people who are working in this terrible economy have had their hours and wages stripped back so for the only place for them to live is out on streets. >> what's the remedy? >> the remedy is to understand there's a solution through government. in the short term the lifeline to these families are extended emergency unemployment benefits. that's what separates millions of families from homelessness. but the other remedy is to understand that when there aren't job training slots for these people, when there are long lines at these shelters, that that just perpetuates joblessness and homelessness. the government has to step up not just make sure there's unemployment benefits, make sure there are position at these shelters but give them education pathways back network. >> i want to play senator marko rubio's thoughts on minimum wage. >> this is their solution to what the president called the

defining issue of our time. raising the minimum wage may poll well but having a job that pace $10 an hour is not the american dream. >> i know the democrats will make minimum wage an issue along with the conversation of income in equality. what's your response to the man across the aisle there from florida >> listen, no one wants to make the minimum wage, but the reality is that millions of people do. and it is not a living wage. and so the idea that we're trying to give people the american dream by providing them with a couple dollars more in income isn't the case. i've heard this from republicans over and over again democrats answer is to increase minimum wage. democrats answer is only to provide unemployment benefits. they are components of a safety net that allow people access to the other things that encompass the american dream. our solution also is rebuilding america to put people back to work and paying our teachers and public employees what they

deserve having an educational system that actually provides a real pathway to employment. >> senator, i know our audience commends you for doing what you did. stepping out with the homeless and finding out what it's like. senator chris murphy. that's the ed show. politics destination with reverend al sharpton starts right now. >> thanks to you for tuning in. tonight's lead, time for some traffic problems in fort lee. those eight words are sending shockwaves towards new jersey governor chris christie tonight. they are contained in a stack of private emails and text messages among top christie aides that became public today. documents that make clear a local political story now reaches all the way into the office of governor christie. more than a month governor
