. >> leading to the george washington bridge, he answered a lot of questions about how big and how long and drove into what happened last could make or break his national career. breaking news this morning. just 74,000 jobs added last month. the unemployment rate is down, but mostly because fewer people are looking for jobs. we will have first reaction from the white house later this hour. while christie's crisis clogs the headlines in the world of 2015 talk, top democrats got stung by a poll ecolleague. good morning from washington. it's friday. this is "the daily rundown," the
6:01 am
end of an incredibly first week of 2014. we started with the jobs report, a head scratching number to wrap up 2014, an out liar with the recent trends revised in a month or so. let's look at the numbers. the jobless numbers fell from 7% to 6.7%. 74,000 jobs were added in december. that's the lowest monthly increase in more than five years. that's far below the average monthly gains we have seen recently and far below expectations which were around 200,000 jobs. retail and business services were up and information services lot of 12,000 jobs and construction lot of 16,000. the labor. >> 'tis fell to 62.8%. that's the lowest number in 36
6:02 am
years. nearly 350,000 people packed up and left the labor force. we will get the reaction from the white house later in the show. let's get back to the story that has dominated the latter part of this week. chris christie with his political future on the line. new jersey governor chris christie spent 24 hours doing damage control, firing two top aides and apologizing and staging a marathon. he has proven he can survive if it's 100% true, but the rush to jump on the 2016 bandwagon by the republican establishment will slow and probably already has. christie is a man on an island. he has plenty of democratic enemies, he has a bunch of republican enemies too. john mccain had advice for christie on the show.
6:03 am
>> put everything on the table and answer every question. if it's a three-hour press conference, answer every question. >> it wasn't three hour, but almost two. he answered every reporter question in the news conference. >> i am embarrassed and humiliated by the conduct of some of the people on my team. what they did hurt the people of new jersey and hurt the people of fort lee and the person who needs to apologize for that is me. >> he said he was blindsided by e-mails who showed top aides punished the mayor by closing lanes to the george washington bridge that created four days of unprecedented gridlock and he fired the deputy chief of staff who was implicated in the
6:04 am
e-mails and he cut ties with the adviser and campaign manager, asking him to withdraw from the governor's association and drop his bid to be the next chairman of the new jersey republican party. it it may be an example of what political performance can be. >> it is heart breaking to me. i am sick of this. i am humiliated that i did not know this. i am heartbroken and saddened. i'm sad. i'm just stunned. the stages went far and the anger that is there at some point. i'm sure i will have that too. >> it's very contrite and he answered many questions like he was a lawyer. he is one. he was very careful to say that
6:05 am
he has not talked to either bridget kelly or bill since the e-mails broke because of the appropriate and he felt his answer had leads. >> kevin and charlie interviewed each member of my staff. i then questioned kevin and charlie directly since they are the only two who report directly to me. this will go back to the nuance that constitutes a traffic study. i don't have evidence before me as we speak that it went beyond this. i'm going and getting in and asking more questions. i can't make a warranty on that. >> remember he was a u.s. attorney. for now he appears to have insulated himself against the damage that would torpedo his campaign, but if any statements appear untrue, it will undermine
6:06 am
of what he plans to make for his innocence. he tried to innoculate himself on the charge that he is a bully. >> i am not a focus group tested blow dried candidate. or governor. that has always made people uneasy. i am who i am. i am not a bully. >> christie is no longer going to be given the benefit of the doubt. if examples come out, even if christie survives this and he might, the story damaged him and looks like an ordinary politician. it's not different. one of the trends is he perceived to be different than they hope to be president some day. he's a straight shooter and disgusted that they are not working for the american people. what you see is what you get. he made an effort to show his hands off.
6:07 am
>> there is a reputation that i am a micromanager. i'm not. my staff will tell you i delegate enormous authority to my staff. and to my cabinet. >> the other problem is a drip, drip, drip of sorts. the port authority executive david wildstein at the center of the scandal pled the fifth and was charged with contempt. today, six residents have filed a class action lawsuit. the u.s. attorney announced that they are reviewing the scandal to see if there is violation of federal law. it's a sound of silence as conservatives upset by christie's embrace of pop and other enemies that christie made along the way to try to score

6:09 am
this unless the boss was of this mind set. i think he's going to have a hard time in the south. i really do. the edge is part of it. he's a little too slick. >> this came from republicans. i was not reading democratic talking points there. they came to christie's aid. we will see the spokesman who will be joining chris jansing an hour from now. i am joined by jonathan martin, correspondent for the "new york times" and on the phone, we hope to be checking in with our folks in newark and trenton. jonathan, you may begin. you can't lie about that. christie yesterday, before we get to the 2016 aspect. is this an airtight defense that he made himself?
6:10 am
>> if he was telling the truth. >> as long as he was telling the truth, he takes a hit for the incident and he takes a hit for perhaps creating a climate where the top staffers thought this was appropriate and acceptable and beyond that it is survivable and how much more did he know? i'm hesitant that he could make a declaration about politics. so much change in politics. >> the question is, what's fascinating is if chris christie were the republican nominee, you would have the reminder that some of us are much more skeptical than others have been for a long time. what we are seeing right now. >> one of the most strike things
6:11 am
and this is not a pure science. the governor put out that they were supportive of the governor. you scroll down the page and look at the comments, these are all conservative supporters largely from south carolina. overwhelmingly it was bile. he is not going to run. he's a liberal. there was deep suspicion of chris christie from activist conservatives. that will be a challenge. the other thing too, this is a cliche, but it's true. the most damaging things in politics were those that bring us here. lindsay graham is saying that. this screams jersey. >> a couple of other things that seemed and i think are going to hurt him down the road.
6:12 am
one of the things are that he's a hands on guy. his description when he found out about the story just wasn't very impressive. take a listen when you first heard about the story. >> my trainer left. i'm getting ready to get in the shower and at 8:50 they told me about the breaking story and it was the first i knew of any of the e-mails or the information that was contained in that story. >> i guess there is a couple of things that surprised me. number one, most newspapers, particularly those are not going to just not go to the governor's office for a comment. they obviously did. the fact that his staff made the decision not to tell him about it until it broke? that in itself was stunning to
6:13 am
me. >> let's bring it back further than that. the story was written based upon a text and e-mails obtained and wouldn't they have told somebody about the governor himself. i have to turn over stuff here. how can that not pass. there was some communication and the other part is how he runs his office. he is coming up and part of this defense is i'm a hands off kind of guy. i delegate a lot. that's opposite of the image. what supposedly turns people off about president obama. the opposite of that. >> we elect opposites and he would be the opposite and the personification of a hands on take charge governor and president.
6:14 am
>> quickly, here's finding a candidate. i don't know if mark warner is any more vulnerable. he's a vulnerable senator. basically a guy that screams establishment republican in many cases. . >> he decided to do this. it will make it work. >> he will have to run, but keep in mind he has $7 million in the bank. he has more personal money in a separate bank somewhere else. he had a formidable candidate. he's a relentless political figure. gilespie does give republicans a candidate. this can be something town watch. >> not only that, but it could be mark warper who lot of and you thought he was unbeatable.
