on the entire country. all right. that does it for us here at "the cycle." our old friend and new neighbor in the late afternoon alex wagner continues our christie coverage. did the man embroiled in a political retribution scandal really just double down on bipartisanship? yes, yes he did. it is tuesday, january 14th and this is "now." >> governor christie's state of the state speech today. >> we let down the people we're entrusted to serve. >> it is tough to keep them straight. >> a super panel to investigate christie's inner circle. >> i think you're going to see more names come forward. >> several new jersey democrats were rewarded for their

1:02 pm
mistakes were clearly made and as a result, we let down the people we're entrusted to serve. i know our citizens deserve better, much better. i'm the governor. and i'm ultimately responsible for all that happens on my watch, both good and bad. >> despite the fact that the very heart of the bridge gate scandal appears to be revenge, christie used today's remarks to revive his favorite theme -- bipartisanship. >> we need to create an attitude of choice. attitude of choice is not about choosing everything. it's not about saying yes to everyone. it is about us setting our priorities and choosing to invest in new jersey where it matters. the best part of our turn arounds in these past four years is because we have chosen to work together.
1:03 pm
no state in this country has shown more bipartisan cooperation in the last four years than new jersey and our people are proud of it. >> today may have provided him a brief moment to focus on the issues, including education reform. but consider the man is facing not one, but two investigative committees looking into bridge gate. given all that, despite christie's positive overtures in the past hour, the state of his state seems troubled at best. joining me now from washington is new york magazine's johnathan. i want to get your immediate thoughts on what has just transpired, meaning christie's
1:04 pm
state of the state address. he went out there and said i was responsible. was it enough to change the tide? >> no, it's not going to change the tide, but he's not going to use a speech like that to take responsibility. this seems less plausible today than it seemed yesterday. it didn't seem plausible yesterday. david wildstein who was involved in the closing of the bridge met with christie during this period. "the wall street journal" reported this by the way. it seems plausible that wildstein would have been there with the governor without either informing the governor who was doing it or being certain the governor knew this was going on anyway. >> you made a point about the david wildstein. there's photographic evidence at
1:05 pm
an event commemorating september 11th. even if the governor is not involved in the bridge closures, there is the trust issue. trust is one of those things it is very hard to win back once you've lost it. the fact he went out there and said i have had no contact with david wildstein in a long time and then there's this photo of them amid the bridge gate closures is going to be a major cause of skepticism. there's going to be this new committee that will have subpoena power. >> that's right. there are a lot of potential scandals swirling around him. my colleagues in their game change book about the campaign reported that mitt romney wanted to put chris christie on the
1:06 pm
ballot. once they looked at his record, they ran in the other direction. misappropriation funds questions, abuses of power questions. he's governed in a pretty bipartisan way in new jersey. that's part of the reason why he's popular. on the other hand, part of his bipartisanship is cutting deals with a very corrupt democratic party. he seems to come out of the corrupt style of governance that prevails in new jersey. >> largely the animating narrative here on the christie story is he's the guy that's the tough talker, but he speaks truth and he speaks truth to power and he's unafraid. he'll take a photo with president obama even when it is
1:07 pm
not politically expedient. comparing chris christie to richard nixon, let me read an excerpt from this. in the e-mails that went public last week, the tone of christie's aids displays the thuggery and characteristic of nixon's men. not the slightest anxiety about getting caught in both cases. whether or not the boss sanctioned these actions, they came from the top. that's what the boss wants and rewards. that's fairly damning not just for chris christie and his staff, but for everybody who was on board for team christie in a way. >> that's right, but the flip side is it's an apt analogy.
1:08 pm
nixon did liberal things that would be unimaginable in today's republican party. in fact, these things can go hand in hand. when you don't care much about the substance of policy, when what you want is popularity and power, your incentive structure is to crush your foes. >> one last question to you. there have been a lot of folks coming out of the wood works these days that say i feel pressured. don zimmer told "the wall street journal" that she requested $100 million in grants for hurricane sandy and received only
1:09 pm
$300,000. of all of this, i feel as if the hurricane sandy relief, if that was abused or misused, that more than a traffic lane and a bridge lane closure is the thing that will damn chris christie on the national stage. >> there's no reason for this. this is a pure attempt to screw our enemies. sorry if i used the wrong word. >> it's okay. >> the add situation is murkier. christie picked the higher bidder, not the lower bidder for tourism ads. these ads featured christie and his family in all kinds of other states. it happened in dove tail with his political prospects. until we come up with some damning comments that were in

the republicans did not ask for any offsets. this is a state of emergency, 1.4 million people who have very little to live on. my own view is that we should do is say, you know what? we're going to require 50 votes. we're going to overcome the republican filibuster. we don't need to have to get 60 votes for every single piece of legislation designed to help working families whether extending unemployment benefits or increasing the minimum wage. majority should rule. i'm laughing because we have seen unprecedented obstructionism on the part of republicans since obama has been president. it's hard for me to imagine things getting worse.
