. good monday morning, right now on first look, security threats. the winter olympics are threatening islamic groups. chris christie ty investigation. the probe widens beyond traffic trouble at areas of political strong arming which the governor's office calls categorically false. and super bowl showdown. the nfl's number one offense squares off against the number one defense as peyton's dream season comes to a head. very good morning. nice to see you. i'm veronica de la cruz. the wait is over, football fans, the seattle seahawks and the denver broncos are going to the

super bowl. the san francisco 49ers score the first touchdown with anthony dickson's leap over the defense. the niners lead 10-3 at halftime. but in the third seattle goes into beast mode. marshawn lynch brings home a 40 yard touchdown. game tied 10-10. then colin kaepernick in the pocket as it closes in. he fires off to anquan boldin. touchdown. the niners regain the lead, 17-10. in the fourth, seattle's russell wilson with his cannon pass to jermaine kearse. the hawks take the lead 20-17. the seahawks are up 23-17. kaepernick throws an interception in the end zone. to the afc title, broncos and patriots. denver scores the first touchdown of the game in the second. peyton manning connects with jacob tammie. no patriots touchdown in the first half. he connects to demaryius thomas for a touchdown. there you go.

denver leads 20-3. three minutes left in the fourth. tom brady rushes for the score. the patriots go for two. stopped by denver's defense. they don't get a comb-back win. denver the afc champion wins 26-16. and there you have it, folks, the seattle satiseahawksl take on the denver broncos in met life stadium on february 2nd. also in new jersey, there is more trouble for governor chris christie. another mayor coming forward saying she was the target of political retribution. the government says it is politics at play. here's nbc national investigative correspondent michael isakoff. >> reporter: while huddling with big donors in florida, chris christie woke up to new headlines about claims from a democratic mayor of strong arm tactics that cut her city off from funds to recover from hurricane sandy. and democratic lawmakers are now vowing to investigate. >> she's perhaps one of the first mayors to actually come

forward and say this specific thing happened. i think the committee needs to look at the facts, hear her story, look at the e-mails. >> reporter: hoboken mayor dawn zimmer says christie's lieutenant governor threatened her that unless she backed a project, they would cut the sandy funding. >> i will stake my life on it. i will take a lie detector test. i say to him and his administration, will you do the same? >> reporter: but zimmer faces new questions about her credibility and her timing. >> she also said she liked working with governor christie so i think you have to look at her current statement in light of her former statements before this became an orchestrated pile on. >> reporter: even christie's 2013 democratic swipe saying good dawn zimmer came forward but why did she wait until she saw blood in the water. >> with 20-20 hindsight and the

context we're in now, you can look back and say, okay, it's retribution. so i think probably all mayors are reflecting right now and thinking about it, but, you know, i -- i really hope that that's not the case. >> in interviews this weekend, zimmer said she didn't mention the sandy threat before because she feared nobody would believe her and she was still in the process of deciding to come forward. christie aides called zimmer's charges categorically false. they said hoboken got $70 million from sandy recovery and they said the $100 million zimmer requested was for future flood control, not for sandy relief and that the amount was over 1/3 of allstate resources for a city that is only two square miles. and that was nbc's michael isakoff reporting there. now to russia wherein creased threats are surfacing 17 days away from the start of the winter olympics in sochi. the threats are from a new

militant group. they're responsible for deadly twin suicide bombings in volvo grad. duncan, good morning. what more can you tell us? >> good morning, veronica. well, while we haven't been able to verify the video, it does appear to be credible. it was posted on a web side noechb to be used by islamic militants. it shows them strapping on their suicide vests, wires running down their arms to a trigger button. they claim responsibility for two suicide bombings in the city last month. they promise there is more to come during the olympics. they talk about tourists receiving a present. they say it will be revenge for all the muslim blood being spilled around the world. over the weekend president putin was once again trying to reassure the visitors the games in sochi will be safe. security is incredibly tight with airport style checks and

more than 30,000 police and military personnel. the fear is militant groups will try to hit targets elsewhere in russia, so called soft targets like transportation hubs just like the ones attacked last month. >> duncan, thanks. and there are new questions about the most famous american already in russia, edward snowden. this morning lawmakers want to know if he acted alone or if he get help from inside the kremlin. they're launching an investigation. >> i believe there's a reason he ended up in the hands, the loving arms of an fsb agent in russia. >> you think the russian's helped ed snowden. >> i believe there's questions to be answered there. i don't think it was a gee whiz luck event that he ended up in moscow. >> government investigators tell nbc news there is no evidence to suggest snowden had help from another country. the white house is not commenting. okay. wake up call to tell you that. two and a half years in the making and more than 500 million

miles above the earth's surface. this is the unmanned rosetta spacecraft launched in 2004. it's been hibernating since 2010 to conserve energy, but today it will awaken to begin its unprecedented mission to land on a comet. they hope scientists can answer one key question, whether comets are responsible for water on earth. it's expected to land on 67 p's icy surface on november 11th. peyton manning's play calls didn't help the broncos become the afc champions, they also raised money for charity. manning raised almost $25,000 during the patriots/broncos game. manning has been getting praise for nebraska for shouting omaha before snapping that ball. eight businesses offered to pay 800 bucks for every omaha heard in the afc title game to donate

tuesday. that storm is located up in north dakota. it doesn't look like much up there. we have winter storm watches. the storm will intensify as it gets to the mid-atlantic. winter storms from richmond, d.c., boston, philly. it looks to begin tuesday morning ending late tuesday night. so, again, if there was a snow day, most likely it would probably be wednesday morning or maybe some early releases from schools down around the d.c. area tuesday afternoon. storm totals, not a blockbuster huge snowstorm event, but definitely an inconvenience. cape cod and long island, the higher total. washington, dc, 3206 inches. new york, around 2 to 4. if we get the 3 to 6 around washington, d.c., that will be the biggest snowstorm in years. >> the polar plunge. >> very light and very fluffy. >> time to go skiing. >> that's the type of know you want to be in. >> exactly. thanks, bill. charges in the maryland exorcism case.

good morning. and welcome back. an interesting story out of italy where a nun in italy was feeling stomach cramps and rushed to the hospital where she gave birth to a baby boy. the nun claims she didn't know she was pregnant, while her mother superior said, quote, it seems she was not able to resist temptation. the baby was named francis. according to police a maryland mother killed two children while attempting to perform an exorcism. police will not elaborate on the exorcism claims. a security video has surfaced showing a woman attempting to flee the scene of an accident in her white honda. while leaving the scene the woman lost control of her car and struck a pedestrian before

and now here's your first look at this morning's dish of scrambled politics. president obama says smoking pot is no more dangerous than drinking alcohol. it's all in a revealing interview with ""the new yorker"" magazine. he applauds colorado and washington for approving small amounts of marijuana for recreational use. he says outright legalization won't solve the problems. news on a post presidency for the obamas. publishers would pay between 17 and $20 million for the president's memoir. that would be the most ever for a work of nonfiction. the first lady's could go for $12 million. oklahoma congressman james langford is jumping into the race to replace tom coborn. so far he has a wide open field after another congressman, tom

cole, announced he would not run for the seat. coburn announced last week that he will leave the senate at the end of the year. the dallas morning news is out with a profile of gubernatorial candidate wendy davis and blurring the facts when it comes to her life's story. the report takes issue with the age when she divorced. also, how long she lived in a mobile home while accept raetsem her husband. when asked for a comment they said her language should be tighter. the pro obama nonprofit raised more than $26 million according to a voluntary disclosure, but that is actually about half its original goal of $50 million. and that's going to do it for your morning dish of scrambled politics. it's tomb for your first look at politics with washington post reporter, david nakumura. >> good morning. >> nice to see you.

>> you, too. >> let's go to the president's comments about pot which he said is no more dangerous than alcohol. we heard that from the president. earlier in the week senator reed who said he supported it for medicinal purposes, david, do you sense a trend here with all these lawmakers coming out? are we going to see more and more coming out to address this publicly, maybe in support of it? >> i think you will see lawmakers come out with more liberal views. i'm not sure it will be a big move to change federal law. he made clear in the interview with "the new yorker" and has before, the state laws in colorado and washington, the federal government won't override those. the president also made something interesting with not only that he didn't think pot was more damaging than alcohol, but also he made an interesting point that more african-american youth are busted for these crimes at having marijuana or selling marijuana than others are. he felt that was unfair. he's done some efforts to try to sort of change the laws in that case and he recently allowed

eight people to get out of federal prison for marijuana sentences he thought were way too long or cocaine sentences he thought were way too long. these are interesting opinions by the president and i think you could see over time others come forward like this. >> all right, david. you know, you covered the president's speech at the justice department last week in which he addressed nsa reforms. i think the washington post gave a number of take aways from those. what were some of them? >> the biggest messages was that the president tried to split the difference. he's going to take the phone meta data, the bulk collection that the government does out of the hands of the government over the next 60 days. he's asked for a plan. he won't continue to spy on foreign leaders, but at the same time he also made clear that he believes this program is important. so he's going to continue to allow the nsa to collect this data, which some privacy and civil libertarians is not necessary to stop terrorism. the president says he believes in it. >> david, what else are you

buzz." we'll take you out to washington where we're joining david nakumura. what are you looking at today? >> veronica, it's interesting. it's martin luther king's birthday. there's new evidence of a famous phone call that john f. kennedy made to ka ret at that king to make the ground move to get martin luther king out of prison where he had been arrested shows that, in fact, there's an interview with martin luther king that surfaced that said that he did not actually believe that kennedy's phone call was the only force at work. it's interesting, that phone call actually helped president kennedy win the white house because it mobilized african-american voters. this interview that i guess was done with a tennessee man who was writing a book about racism. martin luther king says there were other factors at work. it's 50 years ago now. this was a mutually beneficial phone call from john f. kennedy to the family. i think robert kennedy worked
